Where Zat? Winner!

DSC_5570 [640x480]Pam is this week’s winner by identifying the location as Westie’s Pond in Magnolia. We all skated and fished on this pond on Lake Rd.

Anyone have any great memories about Westie’s?

Congrats, Pam! Come to the Block Party Saturday night and get your t-shirt!

Glosta- Phobic Translation

Ok- This is what the t-shirt means. It doesn’t mean that you’re afraid of Gloucester. It is a play on the word  Claustrophobia (from Latin claustrum “a shut in place”) – the fear of having no escape, and being closed in.

So Glosta-phobia is that feeling you get when you have been on the island so long it feels like you’re being closed in, and you need to go over the Bridge for a little trip up the line or up the coast.

It’s not meant to be a slam against Gloucester. It’s just a fun way, for those of us who’ve been here for years, of saying “I’m bouncing off the walls of Gloucester, and I’ll be right back after a little R&R over the Bridge.”

Hope that clears up the ambiguity. 🙂

Despite Joey’s keen observation regarding my video skills, I humbly submit this week’s Where Zat? Have fun, and I hope no one get motion sickness!

I saw these at the motorcycle run last month. Very cool! They were done by a guy in NH. Maybe I’ll go up there when I’m ready for mine! 😉

Things I learned this summer-

1. Just because it’s less money doesn’t mean it’s a good deal i.e. the mess with Comcast. We went back to Verizon today. Yippee!

2. You can lower your cholesterol and blood pressure with fish oil, flax seed oil, and a little help from prescriptions. My cholesterol went from 256 to 146 and my BP went down 40 points.

3. Cycling ( I made it around the island yesterday), kayaking (Kylie and her dad’s first time out), and the beach are great ways to spend summer in Gloucester especially when you have grandkids who like to do the same things. Cooking baby beets from the Farmer’s Market when we only had bottled water to wash the “red” out was a tasty treat!

4. You don’t have to spend a cent to have fun here.

5. Summers in Gloucester are way too short.

6. I love Gloucester despite the fact that fall is coming.

7. I love Joey in spite of the fact that he pushes me almost to my limit.

8. I love Joey because of this.

9. I learned that I am a lousy videographer.

10. I learned that I keep meeting the “funnest” people right here in G-Town!!

Big hugs and kisses to all of you!

Where Zat Word? Another Twist!

Okay, I just thought this one up as I was scrolling through the posts.

Find these words in the posts from September 5 through today. They’re not scrambled. Start with the top post and work your way back to Sept 5. More than one word may show up in the same post. So find the words and give a brief name of the post where you found it.

Hedgie just clarified my backwards directions from earlier today. Sorry for the confusion! 🙂

Good luck and have fun!

Sharon Lowe Schooner Festival Blooper Reel

I got an email from Sail Gloucester organizer and event planner extraordinaire Ally O’Connor inviting me to go out on the lead boat to cover the Schooner parade yesterday morning.  I would have loved to have gone, picturing all the incredible footage that could be shot aboard the boat with the water cannons leading the schooners out of the harbor.

Being Labor Day weekend there was no way for me to get away from the dock so I asked if Sharon could go to cover it for GMG and Ally told us she would love to have her aboard.

Now for the back-back story.

For some reason I crave video.  I think it’s because I know there’s going to be a lot of great photography out there and I like to get personal-  especially when I can bring the viewers someplace that other people don’t have access to.

With my work schedule this time of year I can rarely get to the big events that Sharon covers so well.  So I beg her to bring my video camera.  She always is reluctant to take it but being the great teammate that she is, she will sometimes oblige.

So here it is- unedited.  I didn’t change anything,  only copied the video clips she took from the memory stick into the video.  If nothing else you might be able to get some tips on how not to take video.   As good as Sharon is with still photography, video is just not her thing.

Tip 1) hold the camera horizontal when taking video. Click pic to view-

Aboard the Gateway Endeavor for the Schooner Race Today

DSG_5243DSC_5314The Gateway Endeavor is a Boston- based boat that inspects the LNG lines every day of the year. It also assists in boat fires as you can read here.

Captain Sal lives here in Gloucester.

More photos of the schooners will be posted soon.

A Cool Photo Tip!

How to Blur a Distracting Background

Armed Only With a Point and Shoot feature-psbackground

The mission: Take a great portrait in front of a distracting background.

The equipment: The crummiest point-and-shoot camera on the market.

Your task: Throw the background out of focus so you can emphasize the subject.

Mission Impossible? Hardly. Even with the simplest point and shoot, you can get the blurry background you crave. Here’s how:

  1. Put the camera on the “portrait” setting.
  2. Move the subject away from the background.
  3. Back away. Far away. Farther. Keep going. OK, stop.
  4. Zoom in on the subject and take the picture.

That’s it! Try it for impromptu street portraits, vacation photos, or any time you need a great picture in a lousy location.

Harbor Loop Concerts a Big Hit!

With the great weather last night, the hill on Harbor Loop was packed. The pizza and other food vendors stayed open after the Farmer’ Market closed. Kids were everywhere. The Megan McKenzie Band opened the concert and rocked the house. To hear the band, click here.

The sun set, and Phat Maxx took the stage. The kids accepted the band’s invitation to come onto the stage and little rockers danced the night away.

Next week is the last concert with Hoodoo Revelator who had to be rescheduled because of bad weather early this summer.
