Fred Rice to Present at the Seaside Garden Club on March 11th at the Manchester Community Center
Kate Wilwerth from the Seaside Garden Club writes,
“Hi Kim – Great to follow your Monarch journey in Mexico. Beautiful photos and accompanying text! The Seaside Garden Club has a great program coming up next week. Fred is a dynamic speaker – should be a great turn out! Â Thanks for your continued support!”
The Seaside Garden club is thrilled to have the always entertaining Fred Rice present his new program entitled “The Well Decorated Garden” on Tuesday, March 11th at the Manchester Community Center.  Doors open at 7:00 pm for social time; the program begins promptly at 7:30 pm.  Light refreshments will be served. We are pleased to announce that this program is open to all at no charge, thanks to the generosity of the Manchester Cultural Council. Â
Fred describes his new program: An appealing garden is the result of the sum of it’s individual parts, and plant material is only a part of the horticultural equation. The “bones” of the garden provide the form, the plants provide color, texture, and fragrance, but there is another factor that provides a sort of garnish, Â a sort of human touch. Â The addition of sculpture, furniture, structures, and architecture help to make each garden unique to it’s creator and the possibilities are nearly endless! Â “The Well Decorated Garden” explores many of those possibilities.
Fred Rice, former Manchester resident (now residing in Rome, New York), is a well known garden designer, consultant and sought-after horticultural lecturer. He has nearly 30 years experience as a lecturer/public speaker throughout the Eastern United States and in the UK.  His former home at 9 Friend Street in Manchester was open regularly for garden tours and has been featured in many publications, including Country Homes, Country Gardens, The English Garden and Dream Gardens Across America.  In addition, Fred has many stage and screen credits to his name for wig and makeup design.  His resume also includes floral design and consultation and teaching.  Visit Fred’s website for more information: http://frederickrice.com/

The Seaside Garden Club kicks off 2014 with a program all about Bonsai on February 11th at the Manchester Community Center.  Social time begins at 7:00 pm and the program starts promptly at 7:30 pm.  All are welcome, guests $5.  Light refreshments will be served.
Bob Downey will introduce the club and guests to the wonderful world of bonsai. Â He will present the history and art of bonsai as well as demonstrate bonsai creation and styling. Bob Downey was the president and now co-president of the Northeast Bonsai Association for over 30 years. Â He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this art.
Bonsai is the art of dwarfing trees or plants and developing them into an aesthetically appealing shape by growing, pruning and training them in containers according to prescribed techniques. In Japanese, bonsai can be literally translated as ‘tray planting’ but since originating in Asia, so many centuries ago – it has developed into a whole new form.  Overall, bonsai is a great interest, hobby or even profession to undertake. It has to be said that a successful bonsai is most definitely a horticultural masterpiece.

Seaside Garden Club Annual Plant Auction May 14th
Lecture Tonight at the Seaside Garden Club
Lecture Tonight at 7:30 at the Manchester Community Center: Oh Garden of Fresh Possibilities! ~ Notes from a Gloucester Garden.
Cabbage White Butterflies Mating in the Native Flowering Dogwood FoliageÂ
The lecture tonight is based on the book of the same name, which I wrote and illustrated. In it I reveal how to create the framework, a living tapestry of flora, fauna, and fragrance that establishes the soul of the garden. Using a selection of plant material that eliminates the need for pesticides and herbicides, and guided by the plants forms, hues, and horticultural demands, we discuss how to create a succession of blooms from April through November. This presentation is as much about how to visualize your garden, as it is about particular trees, shrubs, vines, perennials, and annuals. Illuminated with photographs, and citing poetry and quotations from Eastern and Western cultural influences, this presentation engages with an artist’s eye while drawing from practical experience.

The Cecropia Moth, or Robin Moth (Hyalophora cecropia)Â is the largest moth found in North America, with a wingspan of up to six inches. He is perched on the foliage of our beautiful native Magnolia virginiana (Sweetbay Magnolia), one of several of the caterpillar’s food plants. You can tell that he is a male because he has large, feathery antennae, or plumos, the better for detecting scent hormones released by the female. This photo was taken in our garden in early June.
The Manchester Community Center is located at 40 Harbor Point, Manchester.
