Through June 16: Passions by Ed Touchette

Passions, three large canvases by Ed Touchette are currently on exhibit in the Ann Fisk Room
at the Rocky Neck Gallery through June 17.

Hear it from the Horse’s Mouth! Join Ocean Alliance’s Iain Kerr and Patrick Woods for an informal discussion on schedule, status and plans for Ocean Alliance’s ongoing restoration of the historic Tarr & Wonson Paint Manufactory at 6:30pm on Wednesday, June 16 at the Rocky Neck Gallery, 53 Rocky Neck Ave.
Since acquisition of the Paint Manufactory, the Ocean Alliance team has been working diligently to conduct all necessary background work in preparation for the restoration—cleanup and remediation, site visits, inspections, initial permitting, design, etc.
As of June 1st, on-site work has begun—come join the gang to learn more about short-term and long-term goals and share your thoughts on the project. We look forward to seeing you and discussing the exciting restoration!

Collage artist Ekua Holmes will have open studio hours over the weekend. Hours will be posted outside the Residency Studio, 51A Rocky Neck Ave. She will give a Gallery Talk about the work she did during her residency at 7pm on Tuesday, June 29 at the Residency Studio, 51A Rocky Neck Ave.

North Shore Arts Association
The North Shore Arts Association is currently showing its second Members’ Exhibition of the season June 5th through August 1st.
In addition to the Members’ Exhibition, there is a solo exhibition of paintings by Charles Shurcliff from June 5th through June 23rd.
Also from June 5th through June 23rd a solo exhibition of small paintings by Claudia Kaufman is on display.
Upcoming Events
Two new Featured Artist Exhibitions will be on display from June 23 until July 11. Mark Shasha’s paintings will be exhibited in the Gordon Grant Room. The Artist Reception will be held Sunday, June 27 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

Elizabeth Harty – June 5, 6 – “Acrylics with Mixed Media” Ths class will focus on the exploration of personal vision in a series. Using color, collage, mark making techniques, simplification and abstraction, students will learn to find joy in experimenting. They will expand their artistic perspective and learn new ways of working. Limit 12.

Bea Pappas – June 16, 17, 18, 19 – “Layering with Mixed Media” Students will “layer” over texture and stampings. Acrylics will be used to create texture and students will make their own stamps. Nothing is ever wasted working in this manner. This class is a perfect continuation of Pappas’ Pouring Workshop, but it is not necessary to have previous experience. Open to students of all levels of experience. Limit 10.

Peter Spataro – June 22, 23, 24 – "Plein Air Workshop" This workshop is designed for all media painters. It will be especially beneficial for watercolor painters who have felt the urge to try acrylics. On the first day, Spataro will demonstrate the use of acrylic as a watercolor, on watercolor paper. Over the next two days students will use acrylic on canvas; however all are encouraged to use any medium regardless of what is demonstrated each day. Limit 15.

Barbara Donnelly – June 25, 26, 27 – “Capture the Moment” Watercolor Plein Air Workshop In this three-day plein air workshop each student will learn to “capture the moment” with light and shade. Light is what defines the objects in space. The luminous Cape Ann light on the harbor and landscape is glorious! There will be watercolor demos on site, covering composition, values and color. An award-winning artist and popular teacher with her studio on Gloucester harbor, Donnelly will advise students at their easels with an emphasis on individuality. John Caggiano – July 9, 10, 11 – “Painting from the Heart and the Head” This workshop is geared to all levels of artistic ability. It will concentrate on drawing, composition, design, color and value. Caggiano will endeavor to have each student utilize inner talent and perception to grow and develop his/her artistic abilities. The day will begin on location with a painting demonstration that will emphasize the essential elements of composing a successful painting en plein air. Caggiano will then circulate among the group and help each student successfully meet the challenge of interpreting the chosen subject matter. Dennis Poirier – July 12, 13, 14 – "Color Vibrations in Oil and Acrylic" In this workshop Dennis Poirier works with each individual to establish the simple shapes in a motif and to understand that a good concept leads to good picture making. Ellen Rolli – July 14 & 15 – “Big Color, Bold Strokes” Acrylic Workshop Artist Ellen Rolli, recently featured in an American Artist Workshop Issue for her bold style and “loosening up” teaching techniques, will instruct in the art of arranging simple still life set-ups and on the second day will discuss outdoor composition and painting. Susan Daly – July 16 & 17 – “Monotypes with a Plexiglas Plate” Students will savor the “Joy of Monotypes!” in this two-day workshop exploring water-based printing inks, water-soluble oils and watercolor. Daly will demonstrate all mediums as students work from their previous completed paintings, photos or their imagination to create unique images with this hand-pulled process. Limit 10.

Steve Kennedy – July 19, 20, 21 – “Perspectives – Painting the Streets of Gloucester” *9:30 am-3:30pm Learn how to see light and shade as it relates to architecture, along with a focus on proper perspective and drawing. Paint right on the streets of East Gloucester in this three-day workshop with award winning artist, Steve Kennedy. In a pragmatic, yet appreciative approach, Kennedy wants to bring his students on an exploration of Cape Ann streets as they really are. Limit 15.

David Curtis – July 21, 22, 23 – “Understanding Light” David Curtis will use his 35 years of plein air painting experience to instruct a plein air oil painting landscape workshop. The focus will be on understanding and interpreting the effect of light on a chosen subject. Andrew Anderson-Bell – July 23 – “Landscape Painting in Pastel” This pastel workshop will focus on landscape painting working in the studio from photographs, memory and imagination. Emphasis will be placed on composition, values and light. Andrew will share his different techniques using pastel paper, tools and materials. Students will receive individual attention at their easels, as well as demonstrations and critiques. Limit 15.

Charles GruppĂ© – July 30, 31, Aug 1 – “Plein Air Painting” Award winning Artist Charles GruppĂ© is offering a three-day landscape and marine painting workshop in oil and acrylic. Gruppe shares his unique techniques using a palette knife and brush in a rapid wet-on-wet approach to achieve a controlled, impressionistic style painting. Judythe Evans Meagher – Aug 2 – “Color Mixing with a Limited Palette” Award winning artist Judythe Evans Meagher is offering a special one day workshop. While demonstrations will be done in transparent watercolor, the information presented also applies to opaque media such as oils, gouache and acrylics. Students may bring a medium of their choice. Limit 6.

Lynda Goldberg – August 5, 6 – “Creating Monotypes with an Etching Press” Explore the process of creating monotype (one-of-a-kind) prints on paper. Students will learn general printmaking techniques using an etching press. Incorporating the elements and principles of design students will create prints using natural and man made objects. Students will explore different ways of creating texture and depth on an inked surface. Using the plates created and pulled, students will have the original print, a “ghosted” print, and a third print utilizing what is left on the plate. The possibilities are endless! Limit 6.

Lynn Loscutoff – August 7, 8, 9 – “Watercolor on Yupo” This workshop is geared towards intermediate and experienced painters or the beginner who likes a challenge. Students will be working on “YUPO” paper, a synthetic coated paper which works in a very organic way. Paint moves and blends and leads to an even greater creative experiences.

Frank Federico – August 7, 8, 9 – “The Painterly Pastel” *9:00am-3:00pm Award winning artist, Frank Federico, is holding a three-day plein air pastel workshop. During this workshop, Federico will show students how he focuses on the essence of a landscape or figure, while applying emotional and aesthetically crafted content in the pastel medium. SUMMER SESSION: Focus on Drawing and Illustration technique: Portraiture features, Landscape, Still life, Sculpture & Molds: In sessions 1 & 2 Bob will instruct the students in pencil work through illustration and drawing techniques that focus on elements of size, dimension, lay-out, shading, light and darks, facial features for Portrait work and Harbor views sessions. Self portrait work will be covered. Please send in a 5 x 7 photograph of a person or pet. Relief sculpture work and making molds will be covered in session 3. Co-ed Ages 8 – 13 (space limited)
