Don’t miss the chance to see a very special show right at home – “Snakes of New England with Rick Roth”

Here’s how:

“He has such a great ease and natural presentation! People register and the library sends them a link which they can watch–at their convenience–anytime July 20-25. Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team was so good to work with us offering this wonderful opportunity to learn.”

Summer reading, new books, ongoing weekly programs, and special summer events: Sawyer Free children’s department is impressive! Families time regular visits to check out and return books with an array of fun plans. Rick Roth and crew engendered smiles and gasps with snakes from New England and the world on July 27, 2019.

Ssssecurity!

With the crowds at capacity year round, the children’s library is ideal on this level.

Imagine using stairs and the elevator to access the crush of ongoing and popular children’s programs on a proposed top floor of a proposed new building (review plans here). Sawyer Free has appropriated $935,000 from the endowment for a fundraising firm to assist with the capital campaign to raise 20 million of a 26 million plus project. Preliminary plans displayed at the annual meeting can be seen here

The childen’s department needs renovation and expansion, and access to its outdoor space again. The future planned terracing limits the public outdoor space and will impact the rich flexibility of so many outdoor options, running around and programs this department made use of since the Monell build.

Reminder – Pop UP Planetarium at City Hall tomorrow July 29,2019 summer 2019 a Universe of Stories (separate reminder post coming)

Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team Update

Rick Roth writes ~

We had a nice time at Visiting Scientist Day at O’Malley Middle School on Friday. Five 45 minute classes of sixth graders. We brought salamanders, frogs, turtles and snakes. Sam Bevins took the day off from Gloucester High to do the presentaion, and he’s really good at it. Extra help from sixth grader Sam Ciolino. Thanks guys.

Got home to find Gretchen, one of our bull snakes had laid nine eggs. They are now in the incubator at 79F. for about 70 days. Evilyn, our female white-lipped python looks quite gravid (snake talk for pregnant). Hope to see eggs soon. A couple of our other snakers are starting to look like they might be eggy too.

Met with Eric and Brendan from the Green Team at Manchester/Essex Regional High School last week. It looks like we might get two students next school year to help with all manner of CAVPT activities.

Meanwhile… Nick Taormina and I have been checking our turtle traps on Essex County Greenbelt property every day for about three weeks, where there is a record of a Blanding’s Turtle (Threatened Species in Mass). It was kind of a bust, we only found one turtle- a ten inch snapper. But there my be more we can do there. Gotta check with ECGB, Fish and Wildlife and a herpetologist buddy of mine. More on that later.

Meanwhile…we have a show to do:

Saturday June 14, 2014 3pm
Snakes of New England and the World- one hour live animal presentation
Lincoln School: Hartwell Pod B
We need volunteers. Please get in touch if you can help with the show. Or… if you’re in the hood, check it out. There is a suggested donation of $5 or $15 for a family of 3 or more. We’re going to try our best to make it worth it.

Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team Update

Logos.AI In the I should have mentioned this earlier but I didn’t department: Tuesday April 22, 2014 1:30-3pm Snakes of New England and the World- 45 minute presentation and 45 minute some sort of snake related kids art project for the Waltham Land Trust. Somewhere in Waltham MA, exact location to be announced.

We need volunteers for this. Please get in touch. Speaking of volunteers: 2014 Gloucester Pride Stride- You can get pledges and walk for CAVPT. Check out the website gloucesterpridestride.com for info and pledge sheets. We will try to have some sort of exhibit there, but we also have Earth Day at Essex County Greenbelt that day, so… if we get lots of volunteers, we can have an exhibit at both events. So, get those pledges and get ready to walk for us.

Don’t forget to check out your Easter Sunday Boston Globe magazine for a cool article entitled Two Rick Roths Walk Into a Bar.
