GLOUCESTER, Mass. (July 25, 2011) – The upcoming Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race was featured this month in Runner’s World, a national running magazine, as a destination race noted for its “million-dollar ocean views” and historic seaport charm.
The Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race is set for 8 a.m. on Sunday, August 21, beginning and ending at the famous Fishermen’s Memorial Statue in Gloucester, Mass., the nation’s oldest seaport. The race debuted last year with almost 1,000 runners, capturing the attention of Runner’s World.
Author Jon Marcus, who ran the course, referenced the “narrow streets with tightly packed homes of fishing families” and “breathtaking coastline” – including five miles of unimpeded ocean views.
“If you’re looking to race to the sights, sounds and smells of the Atlantic, than Run Gloucester! delivers the coastal vibe – without the crushing crowds,” Marcus wrote.
Registration for the race in ongoing at www.rungloucester.com, and to receive updates on Facebook, go to www.facebook.com/RunGloucester.
The race benefits the Gloucester Fishermen Athletic Association’s fundraising efforts for the Newell Stadium Renewal Project, which is progressing and on schedule, according to Dick Wilson of the GFAA.
“The financing for the projected $3.5 million dollar project is nearly two-thirds complete with field soil tests taking place in order to secure more accurate bid specs,” Wilson said. “This will all be completed by October and the financing in place by December, so we are very pleased and optimistic, and grateful to the race and other donors for their help to make this important project a reality.”
For additional information on the stadium project, including a history and ways to donate, visit http://www.gloucesterathletics.com/newell_stadium/.
“It’s a great cause and a great course – so we’re optimistic the Cape Ann community will come out and support the race and run on Aug. 21,” said Race Director Dave McGillivray, whose firm DMSE Sports also directs the BAA Boston Marathon, the sold out TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K in Maine and the recent Harvard Pilgrim 10K at Patriot Place.
The Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race also features a Kid’s Fun Run at 9:45 a.m. the morning of the race at the Newell Stadium field at Gloucester High School. Bib number pick-up for registered runners will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., Aug. 20 at the high school, and the morning of the race from 6 to 7:45 a.m. at the high school. For additional runner information, go to the “schedule of events” page on the http://www.rungloucester.com website.
A Road Runners Club of America Expo will take place Saturday, Aug. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on race day, Aug. 21, from 8 a.m. to 11a.m. by Gloucester High School Newell Stadium along the canal. Vendors include the National Running Center, Greater Boston Running Co., Racewire, Wicked Running Club, B Positive Project, Cape Ann Brewery (who will be passing out samples to those 21 and over on Sunday), End of Summer Classic, Kettlebell Training for Runners, Hint Water, Leukemia Team in Training and the Road Runners Club of America.
This year’s sponsors include the Gloucester Times, North Shore 104.9 and Addison Gilbert Hospital. For additional information on this year’s race, visit the race website at www.rungloucester.com.
