One of my favorite things about watching Ellen Ford perform
is the way adoring listeners seem to wrap her in a warm, fuzzy
blanket with their cheers and applause. It just so obviously
makes her feel loved, which she most certainly is… by us all.
Last time in, Ellen turned the entire evening into an utter joyfest.
Accompanied once again by the great Chick Marston, she’ll be
doing it all over again come Wednesday. Don’t miss this! ~ Fly

when I was just a kid on a path he’d blazed for us all.

I was about 13 years old when I first met Chicklet Marston.
Jonathan Pope picked up a gang of us and drove to his house
in Rockport to see if Chick wanted to buy his metal-flake blue
Fender Stratocaster. Chick, a well-schooled acoustic guitarist
with a Berklee Conservatory background, had never played an
electric guitar in his life. He had no idea what to do with the
thing, fumbling all over it – and I was left wondering what all
the fuss was about with this supposedly “great player”. Well…
couple weeks go by, him playing his vintage 1936 Martin 0018,
and I find myself going to music school BIGTIME, soaking up
all I could from this brilliant, classic American folk & blues
picker. His thumb was a perfect metronome on the bass
patterns. The music he played was simple and poignant.
He went on to introduce an entire world of music to me that
changed my life and helped build my character as a more
well-rounded musician. Staple Singers. Doc Watson. Jelly
Roll Morton. Mississippi John Hurt. Odetta. On and on and
on. Chick Marston will forever be my mentor and hero. Most
people around here, I think, just don’t know what they got.

Rhumb. We start with the great Chick Marston this week.
Face it. He’s the Grand Master. Such a wonderful study of the
American folk blues genre. Next week we’ll be doing a toy
drive for the first time EVAH with Marina Evans. The 23rd caps
it off with Sister Linda and Brother J.B. That’s right… another
Amero Family Christmas. It always starts early… 7pm! ~ Fly

1968: Howard Marston, Jr. (a.k.a. “Chicklet”) seated with his parents in
resistance to the SSS and the U.S. involvement in Viet Nam.
When I first met Chick Marston, I was a young teenager.
My friends had told me I had to “see this guy play guitar”.
A gang of us rode in Jon Pope’s van to his house in Rockport.
Pope wanted to sell him a gorgeous metal-flake blue Fender
Stratocaster. Only thing was, Chick had never touched an
electric guitar in his entire life! I watched while he fumbled
all over the thing and wondered what all the hoopla was about.
But it wasn’t long after that I got to hear him play his nineteen
thirty-something Martin and simply sat in awe. And, soon after
that, he was making national news, courageously refusing
induction into the Army and its gross, immoral war – his beloved
and highly intelligent father and mother by his side all the way.
He was my hero. Our hero. I wonder how many local residents
know about this little chunk of American History. You want an

meanwhile, it is my honor to have “Chicklet” Marston as musical
guest at the Rhumb Line this Wednesday night. We have a total
blast every single time we play together. I see no reason for that
to change now… not after all these years. ~ Fly
