I think there should be a children’s movie (maybe there is?) like Cars, but about boats. I was sitting at the Blue Collar the other day and totally envisioned the boats in their slips cheering the Seaweed on as it returned home. Personification. Each time I look at this photo, I hear the boats talking. Maybe I’m just tired.

We went on our first whale watch of the season with Cape Ann Whale Watch this week on a beautiful morning for a ride. Normally I would have gone earlier in the season but schedules preventing our going any sooner than this. I LOVE going in the spring when the whales have returned and are actively feeding. We headed south to the Stellwagon Bank and the trip out took quite a bit longer than it usually does, so I wasn’t feeling too optimistic about our chances.
Boy, was I proved wrong. Naturalist Tina, Captain Johnny and the crew found areas FULL of interesting whale activity including feeding, breaching and calf play. We saw Dross, Wigwam and her calf and Milkweed (who breached a number of times in our presence). We also saw Atlantic White Sided dolphins and a HUGE basking shark. The seas were a bit rough so there was a lot of rocking and rolling (tough for photographers), but what a trip for the memory banks!
If you haven’t gone in a while, I strongly urge you to go!

The James Pub recently opened in the former location of the Village restaurant in Essex. We stopped by to have dinner and check things out and were very happy we did. First, if you are expecting to go in and be reminded of the former restaurant, you’ll be disappointed. The inside has been remodeled and looks great. Even the entry door has changed location (we saw many people approaching the old entryway) but the flow works nicely.
We were seated in a front room and Donna was our attentive server. It was pretty busy for a weekday evening, though, as usual, we were there on the early side for dinner. There a very nice bar area we look forward to checking out when we return. We easily found menu items of interest: Irish Nachos, fish sandwich, steak frites (done to perfection), and strawberry pavlova for dessert. Naturally I also tried the Irish Coffee. *I recommend the sangria* Things seemed to be running very smoothly for a newly opened restaurant. There’s another location in Needham as well, so make sure you are checking the right location for hours and such.
One of the owners came over to say hello and informed us they will be expanding their hours eventually to include Mondays and lunch hours. It was a very enjoyable atmosphere and dining experience. The pricing is on par with most area restaurants and we look forward to returning.

Cash will not be accepted at the gates. Reservations are non-refundable, so please plan accordingly.

The first Gloucester screening of Shep Abbott’s film, ‘GLOUCESTER SPEAKS’
On Friday, May 17th at 7:00pm the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church and the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation proudly host Shep Abbott’s film ‘Gloucester Speaks,’ in collaboration with the Cape Ann Community Cinema, in the Church sanctuary. This will be the premiere screening of the epic documentary film in Gloucester.
Fishermen, Scientists, Public Officials, Scholars, Authors, Artists, Merchants, Local Citizens: in Gloucester documentarian Shep Abbott’s new film ‘Gloucester Speaks’ – nearly a decade in the making – all of these people convey their deeply-held thoughts and feelings about their storied City’s illustrious past, present, and projected future.
Beginning in 1606 with explorer Samuel de Champlain’s naming and mapping of what was to become America’s first commercial fishing port – “Le Beauport” (The Beautiful Harbor) – the film is narrated by Gloucester residents. Their historic port experienced many blessings over the ensuing 400 years, such as the establishment of the greatest cod fishery in the world. It would also endure profound sorrows, including the disappearance of the indigenous Pawtucket People and the eventual loss of 10,000+ fishermen to the sea.
These hardy New England residents share their concerns about the present day, exploring today’s crises of the loss of that great fishery, floods brought by advancing, warming oceans, 100-year storms, and the continuing loss of remaining fish populations heading north to find colder waters. Their stories, hopes and dreams are told with warmth, dignity, and humor, manifesting a deep love and concern for this historic and beautiful fishing port.
Shep Abbott is a veteran, award-winning documentary film-maker, artist, photographer and longtime member of the Unitarian Universalist Church whose hometown is Gloucester, Massachusetts. The screening of his monumental film is a not-to-be missed event!
Tickets ($13.50 General, under 12 free) are available at the door and in advance online at the Cape Ann Community Cinema website: www.capeanncinema.com
The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church is located on the green at 50 Middle Street, at the corner with Church Street. Note: the green is closed for renovation but the main entrance is open. Please seek parking on the street and in lots nearby. A side entrance with an elevator is located at 10 Church Street.
