I made my first stop ever at Kings Roast Beef on Main St for lunch a few days ago after hearing roaringly good reviews. I was not disappointed. We sat inside at tidy table set-ups and had a chicken salad club and an Italian wrap…. (no roast beef this time…). I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of items offered on the menu. It is definitely more than just roast beef, although that was clearly a popular order in the time we were there. Our sandwiches were fresh with generous portions. The service was friendly. It’s a win-win so give it a try especially if you haven’t already.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Sanaz Toossi’s critically acclaimed play at Gloucester Stage from August 9 – 25
Gloucester Stage Company is thrilled to continue its 45th-year celebration by announcing the regional premiere of “WISH YOU WERE HERE“ by Pulitzer Prize Winner Sanaz Toossi. Recipient of the prestigious Edgerton Foundation New Play Award, this captivating production will be directed by Melory Mirashrafiºand run at Gloucester Stage from Friday, August 9 to Sunday, August 25.
Sanaz Toossi‘s masterful storytelling brings breathtaking humanity and cutting wit to the stage as “WISH YOU WERE HERE” chronicles a decade of life as best friends become friends long lost, searching for the bond that once defined them. Featuring a cast of women with Iranian heritage who are making their debuts at Gloucester Stage, the production stars Isan Salem as Zari, Deniz Khateri as Nazanin, Aryana Asefirad as Rana, Cerra Cardwell as Shideh and Josephine Moshiri Elwood as Salme.
Directed by the multi-talented Melory Mirashrafiº, this enlightened comedy invites audiences into the vibrant world of a circle of tight-knit girlfriends in 1980s Iran. As they gather to plan weddings, share intimate moments, and trade witty banter, their lives are set against the backdrop of a country in turmoil, where protests and political unrest threaten to disrupt their sense of normalcy. The play delicately explores themes of friendship, identity, and the complex choices individuals must make in the face of uncertainty.
“After I finished reading Wish You Were Here, I felt like I met my oldest friends onstage playing through a decade of our lives together,” said Rebecca Bradshaw, Gloucester Stage’s Artistic Director. “They are messy and hilarious, but there are also daunting realities seeping through these women’s curtains ready to infect their fragile bonds. Sanaz has a way of making you feel like you have a seat on the couch next to her characters while layering in an authentic world that you may never experience as an American. We get the opportunity to see friends consider emigrating before they are labeled immigrants. But first, we get to lift up a group of women through all of their beauty, ridiculousness, and pain. We are honored to be able to present the regional premiere of this powerful play to the Gloucester Stage audiences.”
“Wish You Were Here is an exploration of what it is to be an Iranian woman across time and geography. The women of the play are bright, hilarious, flawed, and live undoubtedly within the context of one another. There is an elegance to the simplicity of the language, and a brand of unapologetic comedy cut with immeasurable yearning that is distinctly Iranian, yet undeniably human,” shared Director Melory Mirashrafi. “Every time I read Wish You Were Here, I see photographs of my mom and her four sisters from the seventies and eighties: Getting married, plucking hairs, trading advice, growing older, and for some, eventually leaving. They are a compilation of each other, making their migration not just an absence of the place they left behind, but the people.”
The regional premiere of “WISH YOU WERE HERE” features scenic design by Lindsay Fuori, costume design by Karen J. Gilmer, lighting design by Amanda Fallon, sound design by Bahar Royaee, and prop design by Emme Shaw. The production’s dramaturg is Vahdat Yeganah.
WISH YOU WERE HERE will run from Friday, August 9, through Sunday, August 25. All performances, unless noted, are Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 pm, Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 3:00 pm at Gloucester Stage Company, located at 267 East Main Street, Gloucester. Tickets are now on sale and available at GloucesterStage.com.

It starts with how genuinely wonderful Daphne and Wandee the owners are and then it goes to the super inviting space they designed and then you get to the completely unique dishes they serve. Everything is delicious but it’s not the same stuff you get at so many other places. It’s out of the box, fresh concepts that wow every time.
You should have seen the table when everyone tried the chowder for the first time. You would have thought we were at an orgy.

The Quinta do Ribeira Santo is an ancient property once belonging to the Catholic Church, and featuring one of the few perennial streams in the area, the Holy River, the Ribeira Santo. Owner and winemaker Carlos Lucas has over 25 years experience in the cellars of Portugal, Spain, and southern France. Carlos makes complex and compelling wines from the indigenous varieties planted on the property, including Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Tinto Cão, and Encruzado, perhaps Portugal’s finest white wine grape. This blend of Malvasia Fina, Bical, and Encruzado is destemmed and fermented at a very low temperature to preserve primary fruit aromas and bottled after a short rest in stainless steel tanks. Clear and transparent straw yellow in color, it presents aromas of citrus tropical fruits such as pineapple and green apple. In the mouth it has a lively acidity, well balanced with a dry and long finish. Pairs well with light dishes such as lobster, fish, Sicilian lemon risotto, fresh pasta. $17.99.

Finca el Navazo Merum, Jumilla, Spain
Varietals: 50% Monastrell, 30% Syrah, 20% Petit Verdot, Alc. 14.5%
Located in southeastern Spain straddling the border between Murcia and Castilla-La Mancha, Jumilla is a mountainous region of plateaus, hidden valleys and spiky dividing ranges. The climate is transitional-continental, with the Mediterranean moderating the otherwise pretty severe climate of hot dry summers and long, cold winters. The white wines of Jumilla are bright and generally crisp, while the red wines of are dark, ripe and succulent. Permitted varieties for whites are: Airén, Macabeo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Moscatel de Grano Menudo (aka Muscat a Petits Grains), Malvasia, and Pedro Ximénez. For red wines, permitted varieties are Monastrell (aka Mourvedre, Mataro), Cencibel (aka Tempranillo), Garnacha Tintorera, Garnacha, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Red wines dominate and of those the primary grape is Monastrell, which makes up some 85% of total plantings. Merum, from the Latin Merus (“pure”) is a Roman term for wine unmixed with water- that is pure, unadulterated. Noted winemaker Juan Jimenez produces Merum to represent the purity and intensity achievable with his beloved Monastrell grape, balanced and made more elegant by the addition of a touch each of Syrah and Petit Verdot. Merum pours a deep ruby color. Oak-spiced dark berries, licorice and a hint of musky herbs are present on the powerful nose. It is sappy and focused on the palate, offering chewy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that turn sweeter as the wine opens up. It shows good energy and lift on the smoke-accented, appealingly fruity, persistent finish, which is given shape by dusty, slow-building tannins. Pairs well with roasted pork, lamb, barbecued beef. $19.99
Bernard Magrez L’Aurore de Gascogne Le Douceur de Vignes, Gascony, France
Varietal : Gros Manseng, Alc. 12%
Gascony is the region in southwest France that sweeps south from the Bordeaux region down to the Pyrenees Mountains and the Spanish border. The Cotes de Gascogne appellation is slightly inland, nestled behind the pine forests of Les Landes, 5,000 square miles of former marsh, moor and dune-field that was stabilized with maritime pine tree plantations in the early 1800s. Born in Bordeaux in 1936, Bernard Magrez left school at 16 to begin trading wine. Over the decades, he has built a formidable firm owning no less than forty-three individual domains, including several of Bordeaux’s most famous Crus Classes. In fact, he is the only individual to own 4 separate Cru Classe Chateaux. Today Magrez has properties all over the world, and a yacht racing team. At Magrez’ estate in the Cotes de Gascogne, he produces two wines, both made from 100% Gros Manseng. The dry version is a classic Cote de Gascogne, dry, crisp, and clean. The Aurore de Gascogne Le Douceur de Vignes, however, is his masterpiece from this estate: lightly sweet, with heady floral aromas and a long delicate finish. Pairs well with a lunchtime picnic, afternoon fruit and cheese board, or to accompany a cheese selection after dinner, especially blues. $17.99
