Margarita Monday At George’s

It might not come to mind first when you think Margarita Monday, but it’s well worth a spot on your list: George’s on Washington St. We enjoyed a late lunch accompanied by a strawberry margarita at the bar and we will be doing that again it was so much fun! It happened to be pretty quiet in there when we stopped by but that didn’t stop the level of the service or meal enjoyment. I had a fajita bowl and Jim enjoyed his quesadilla.

 ~ Sawyer Free Library

Thursday, August 29, 5:00 to 6:30 pmBig Year Birder, Gino Ellison at Sawyer Free Library

How many different bird species could you dream of seeing, capturing a sound recording of, or photographing, from January 1 to December 31 of any given year? Have you ever considered doing an ABA (American Birding Association) Birding Big Year? How about a county or statewide Big Year? Why would you want to even do one? How does one plan out all the logistics to ensure that each of the important states are visited at the most opportune times? Can you do this alone, or do you need to seek out help? If you find yourself asking any of these questions, or are just interested in birds and birding, read on!

On August 29th from 5:00 to 6:30 pm, the Sawyer Free Library will host Rarified Air – One Passionate Birders’ Big Year Questwith Gene (Gino) Ellison.

Come and meet Big Year Birder, Gino Ellison, and see tons of beautiful bird photographs, while also hearing one birder’s tale about a 12-month quest of a life time. Learn about the mishaps, the successes, the lessons learned along the way, the hilarious birding stories, the new life-time friends made on the journey, and the joy of reporting 801 bird species during 2023!

Be warned… if you attend, you just might get the urge to plan a Big Year yourself!

This will be a 1 hour presentation, followed by a brief question and answer session*.

Summer Starts Winding Down — pat morss

Gloucester’s upcoming Schooner Festival on Labor Day Weekend is an annual sign that summer is coming to an end. And there are other signs.

Lobster boat ‘Toby Ann’ is a sport-fishing boat on the weekend.
The girls agree to go fishing with dad.
‘Ardelle’ watching the whale watches’ whale watchers watching whales (they’re still here).
A lone seal anticipating fall, or outcast from summering on Cape Cod with the sharks.
A Mallard with her super-late August brood of ducklings on Niles Pond.
A Little Blue Heron takes to the treetops for a better view.
While a Black-crowned Night-heron prefers more cover.
A Red-spotted Admiral appreciates our new butterfly bushes.
A Monarch got its wing tips slammed in the door.
This worn Eastern Tiger Swallowtail won’t give up.
A squirrel taste tests acorns before storing up for the winter.
In any case, “It’s been a good summer, right”?

Good Night Gloucester

Some favorite night time images on the water that I thought you might like. The lights one the dark water are among my favorites. Darkness can make the common seem uncommon.

Ernestina Morrissey at the Railways

I got tipped off that the Ernestina Morrissey was at the Railways on Rocky Neck getting some TLC (thank you Liz). While there, I met up with Janet, a loyal FOB and fellow schooner fan. What a joy to be included in tips, greeted warmly at a photo location AND up close and personal with a massive schooner! We love where we live.

Gloucester, MA – Salty’s Bagels, started by Amy Whittenburg, is excited to be a part of the local food scene! After a winter spent tinkering with bagel recipes and learning from some talented bakers from Somerville, Portland, ME, and Vermont, Amy has crafted a bagel recipe that local bagel lovers are really enjoying.

In June 2024, Salty’s Bagels joined the Cape Ann Shared Kitchen, kicking off pop-up events every Sunday morning. The community’s response has been encouraging, with many weekends selling out! Customers can pre-order their favorite bagels through Facebook or Instagram Messenger until Thursdays at 5:00 PM.

Salty’s Bagels are made from high-quality ingredients and crafted with care, resulting in a crispy crust and a chewy, open crumb, thanks to a time-honored proofing process that creates a complex and delicious flavor.

“We think our bagels are a nice way to start the day,” says Amy. “It’s been music to our ears to hear how much people are enjoying them.”

At the moment, Salty’s offers plain, sesame, everything, salt, and the popular rosemary salt. We’re working on new options like sourdough, pumpernickel, and gluten-free. Our homemade schmears feature classic plain, scallion, and on occasion jalapeño.

The name:

The name “Salty’s” invites a playful interpretation of what “salty” means to the individual. It might evoke the delightful flavor of sea salt on a freshly baked bagel or hint at a down-to-earth charm.

What Customers Are Saying:

“I made bagels every week until I tasted Salty’s Bagels. Now I am hooked! They are chewy and not too doughy. We love them!” — Naomi from East Gloucester

“Salty’s is the best bagel I have ever had. They are warm and fresh, with a flaky outside and moist inside. I’d love to see them open a full-time shop!” — Maureen, Cape Ann
