The Rocky Neck Holiday Art & Fine Crafts Festival will opening this Friday, 11/29 with a Gala First Choice Preview Party from 5-7:00 (or later, most likely).  Above is a sampling of the incredible array of beautiful items you will find, on top of having a great time shopping locally at a Rocky Neck party (and we know how to do parties on Rocky Neck!).

There is something for everyone at the Rocky Neck Holiday Art & Fine Crafts Festival. Items you will find at the festival include paintings, photography, prints, cards, calendars, pottery (six wonderful potters have work for sale), jewelry (five golden rings won’t be found here, but you will see some gorgeous seaglass, sterling silver, glass bead and other unique one of a kind jewelry pieces by five talented jewelers),  book marks, children’s books and unique clothing, coasters, beautiful hand painted silk scarves, very cool men’s ties, hand painted mirrors, trivets, ceramic bird houses, hand painted mailboxes, treasure boxes, and so much more.

The Rocky Neck Holiday Art & Fine Craft Festival will take place at The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, in East Gloucester.  The Festival runs for five weekends Saturdays and Sundays from noon-4 PM, starting November 30 and ending December 29, and will include a number of great holiday season parties to enjoy while shopping locally.  In addition to the Preview Party, on Saturday, 12/7 from 2-4 PM, there will be a High Tea Party (the art colony’s twist on an old English tradition).  On Sunday, 12/15 from 3-5 PM stop in for Happy Hour.  On Saturday, 12/21 from 2-4 PM don’t miss the Winter Solstice Party (featuring mead and a cookie competition) and on Sunday, 12/29 from 2-4 PM, get in some practice for the New Year at the Pre New Year’s Party.

Come by early on Saturday or Sunday, have breakfast at Sailor Stan’s, or stop in for chowder after.  Also, don’t forget to visit the galleries on Rocky Neck that are open in the winter:  Elynn Kroger Gallery, upstairs at 15 Rocky Neck Ave., Goetemann Gallery, and John Nesta Gallery, 37 Rocky Neck Ave.

This year the Rocky Neck Art Colony invites the whole community to come visit Rocky Neck and experience the beauty, warmth and hominess of the Cultural Center during its Holiday Art & Fine Crafts Festival and parties, and to support local artists.  The Festival and parties are free and everyone is welcome.  For more information, call 978-515-7004 or visit http://www.rockyneckartcolony.org/winter.php.  

There are many items priced from $4 to $50, going all the way up to $7,000 for an exquisite Gordon Goetemann oil painting of Bass Rocks (in the bottom photo of the stage area).

Aside from being a beautiful piece of art that would grace any home with the budget to purchase it, the owner would be publicly acknowledged as a sponsor of one of the artists selected for the 2014 Residency Artist Program.  Their generosity would also endear them to all the artists who know how critical patrons are to their well being and to the art educational mission of the Rocky Neck Art Colony.  A great way to support Residence Artist Program and the Cultural Center while becoming the owner of an exceptional piece of artwork.

Also, parking is no problem on Rocky Neck this time of year, with plenty of free parking in the public parking lot at the start of Rocky Neck, plus street parking on Rocky Neck Ave and Wonson Street.

2013 Wheelers Point Thanksgiving Swim

This was the 25th anniversary of the Wheeler’s Point Thanksgiving Day Swim. Hosted by Dick and MJ Powers, the swim has grown from an original 4 swimmers to up to 70 swimmers. This year there were 22 hearty souls who braved the cold water, the cold temperature and the blustery winds!

This is dedicated to former thirty year Gloucester City Councilor Gus Foote. I've been meaning to do this for a while. The Foote was a US Navy Torpedo boat, launched in 1896. It was the first of three naval warships named Foote, all named in honor of Rear Admiral Andrew Hull Foote, a successful Civil War captain and fleet commander. The 160 foot long Foote fought in the Spanish-American War and World War I. So Gus, and all my other friends, Happy Thanksgiving.

Just saw that Amazon is offering the Chromecast for $30 for Black Friday Today and giving $6 in Google Play Store Credits making the Chromecast an absolute no brainer steal stocking stuffer-  Here’s the Deal At Amazon

For $30 this is something that will have huge impact.  I freakin love mine!

My guess is that anyone under the age of 30 either laughs or looks puzzled at why anyone would pay for a Land Line telephone or cable.

Reading the last couple years about online services like Hulu for $8/mo and Netflix for $8/mo there are whole slews of great television programming for tiny fractions of what you pay for traditional Comcast cable.

Yesterday I got the $35 Chromecast which plugs into the HDMI port on the back of your TV.  It allows for wifi streaming Television programming from your smartphone or tablet of Netflix or Hulu Plus programming to your TV.

The amount of network and cable shows that are available through these two services are astounding and way more than I’d ever be able to watch.

The one thing that you don’t get is local cable which admittedly is a big deal for a lot of people (not for me though and I suspect not for a lot of younger people who laugh at the idea of being tied to the exorbitant cable tv package plans).

I used The Chromecast with Netflix yesterday.  It took me less than two minutes to set up and was set up in three crazy simple steps.  I mean so easy my mom could figure it out.

I was always skeptical of these things because the video streams wirelessly from your internet and I figured that the picture would be compromised but the picture was insanely clear.  The show I watched was crystal clear.  I could pause and resume using my iPad as the remote and watch without commercials.  And it remembers where you left off watching a show and you can pick it up watching it on your iPad, smartphone or on your TV.

So if you buy the $35 Chromecast (one time purchase) and sign up for $8/mo Netflix and $8/mo Hulu Plus.  You could completely kick your cable bill to the curb.  Of course you still need internet service.

As for local cable channels which I recognize is hugely important to some people there are still OTA (over the air) antenna sold that will pick up local channels.  I don’t know how effective they are and I’d love to hear from people that have gone this route.  These over the air antenna are smaller and sleeker and look like mini sculptures-

So if you can pay $35 once for the Chromecast and $16 a month for Netflix and Hulu Plus and $52 for the Mohu Curve which gets you local OTA channels and after that one initial outlay you’re only into it for $16 a month.

To me it’s a no brainer because I get my news on the internet.

I am a faithful GMG reader and enjoy your posts and pictures.  Thank you for sharing your talents with us. Knowing of your work at Willowdale and your work as a video producer, I thought you would enjoy this wedding trailer from Long Haul Films of a recent wedding there. The intro to the trailer mentions the beautiful setting; I wish a few more scenes of Willowdale had made it into the trailer.  I love the cranes as the backdrop for their vows. I have been following the Long Haul blog for a few years. I’m always cheered by watching two people in love get married!
