Maritime Gloucester, located at 23 Harbor Loop in downtown Gloucester, will host its annual Heritage Day celebration from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The event is free to the public.

Lobster Bake @ The Gloucester House
Enjoy the open air dock atmosphere of the Cafe Seven Seas with lobster, corn and chips for $15. Cash bar. Entertainment.

7:00 pm
Private Fireworks Viewing from Beauport Museum
Watch Gloucester’s annual Schooner Festival fireworks display from the terrace and lawn of Beauport. Treat yourself to an abridged evening tour as the house transforms at night. Bring blankets, chairs, picnics, and mosquito spray. Candles are prohibited. Adults and children over twelve only, please. $12 Historic New England members, $20 nonmembers.  Registration is required. Please call 978-283-0800 to purchase tickets.

7:00 pm
Boat Parade of Lights
The annual Boat Parade of Lights begins at dusk at Jones Creek on the Annisquam River, travels down the river, through the drawbridge and into Gloucester Harbor, ending in the Smith’s Cove area of the harbor. Click here for information on joining the Lighted Boat Parade.

Fireworks Display over Gloucester Harbor. (following Parade of Lights, time approximate)

Sunday, September 4, 10:30 a.m.
Visit Beauport for some of the best views of the annual Gloucester Schooner Festival’s Parade of Sail. Watch schooners sail to the Eastern Point Light breakwater to begin the Mayor’s race for the Esperanto Cup. Coffee and light breakfast refreshments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring blankets and/or chairs and other refreshments if preferred. The house is not available for tours during this event. $10 Historic New England members, $15 nonmembers.
Registration is required. Please call 978-283-0800 to purchase tickets.

Parade of Sail as Schooners proceed from Inner Harbor, past the Fishermen’s Memorial on Stacy Boulevard, to the race starting area off Eastern Point.

RED KNOTS OR WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS?, PIPING PLOVERS, BLACK BELLIED PLOVERS, YELLOW LEGS, MONARCHS, AND MORE: CAPE ANN WINGED CREATURE UPDATE

WONDERFUL creatures are currently migrating through our shores. How blessed are we who live along the Atlantic Flyway. Whether traveling by shore or by sea, there is this great and continual movement of life happening always in our midst.

Many thanks to my friend Jeff Denoncour, Trustees of Reservations Ecologist for the Northeast Region, for assistance with identifying the birds. I met Jeff earlier this summer when he kindly took me out to the tippy far end of Cranes to film the Piping Plovers nesting there.

Additionally we have seven tiny Monarch caterpillars in terrariums. It’s so late in the season for these teeny ones. Last year at this time we were releasing adult butterflies and I worry that they are not going to pupate in time to successfully migrate to Mexico. The caterpillars are too small to handle, but if any of the kids in our community would like to come see, please comment in the comment section or email me at kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com. The last of the Cecropia Moth caterpillars has not yet pupated and he is fun to watch as well.

The above group of four photos are of either a pair of Red Knots or White-rumped Sandpipers in non breeding plumage. The White-rumped Sandpiper is thought to migrate an even greater distance than the Red Knot, from Canada’s Arctic Islands to the Southern tip of South America, and some further still to islands near the Antarctic Peninsula. These shy birds did not allow for human interest and the photos were taken at some distance.

What an amazing summer.. cannot believe it is Labor Day this coming weekend. Since it is also Schooner Festival, thought we should clean around Rogers Street near the Maritime Center. We can park right on Rogers near Walgreens.

 Important Trash & Recycling Information

Good Afternoon,


Effective Thursday September 1, 2016, JRM Hauling & Recycling Services will begin collecting residential trash and recycling for the City of Gloucester. With recent delays in trash and recycling collection, the City is taking the proactive measure of accelerating the start of JRM. 

 

Although there will be no change in normal collection days, the transition is bound to have an occasional glitch.  We anticipate a delay in the appliance collection scheduled for Thursday September 1.  Public Works will have crews out Thursday and Friday collecting these items.  

 

In the event that your trash or recycling is not collected, please contact Public Works at978-281-9785, and we will dispatch someone to collect what was missed.  The City truly appreciates the patience and understanding from our customers.

The Rocky Neck Art Colony Goetemann Artist Residency is pleased to announce the next Resident, Jana Matusz. Jana will be staying on Rocky Neck from August 28 – September 28.

Jana Matusz received her B.A. summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Visual and Environmental Studies (Studio Art) from Harvard University and Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art. Jana Matusz is a highly accomplished plein air painter. Her vast array of subject matter includes landscape, still life, city and townscapes, trucks, figurative work and portraits. Her pallet is vibrant and bold revealing her talent for design and color while highlighting her superb drawing skill. Jana has studied abroad and has shown her work internationally.

Jana Matusz draws and paints directly from observation, never from photographs. Almost all of her drawings and paintings are done en plein air, outdoors. She also paint alla prima, all in one sitting. This is an extremely challenging way to work, particularly given the rigors of New England weather. Jana states that she believes it gives her paintings authenticity, freshness, and immediacy.

Jana Matusz plans to work on paintings of the rocky coast, the quarries, and the town. She is particularly interested in the rocks and quarries, including Halibut Quarry and the State Park, but everything, from town to fishermen, is fair game for Matusz. Fish Box Derby – September 18

The twenty-third annual Fish Box Derby race will run down Rogers Street Sunday, September 18th at High Noon. Each year dozens of kids between 8 and 14 build cars with their families or friends and compete for bragging rights and great prizes. Rules, details and used cars for sale can be found at www.fishboxderby.org.

Coyote back to school Gloucester

Before loping through the parking lot and shifting right at the ‘parked bus game trail‘ and straight on to Cherry Street, our wildlife neighbor lingered in the skate park with us.

We were mostly still as..church mice. Did I think that? I slipped in front of three kids which is ridiculous because the kids are my size or bigger . And it was just passing by. Still, it did seem a long time before its distinctive gait resumed.

The photo is Blow Up style– from the point where we were standing comfortable enough to grab a phone shot of the coyote heading out rather than to the Ralph B O’Maley Innovation Middle School in Gloucester .
