Deer at Parker River

I’m not much of a nature photographer because it takes a lot of patience…and I will be the first to admit that I could use to practice a little more patience!  But this weekend nature just seems to be finding me.  I decided that since I had the day off I’d head over the Parker River in Newburyport with my friend Helen and catch a sunrise, but as we were driving out Helen pointed out these white tailed deer that were hanging around the frosty marsh.   Parker River Wildlife Reservation is a great place to explore cause you never know what you might see!  Next time maybe a Snowy Owl!   blm_8805-edit blm_8785-edit blm_8784-editblm_8810-edit

Pet of the Week- Buddy

Are you looking for a sweet and bashful fellow? A true lover at heart with a mellow nature? A boy that gets along with others and has a playful side? Well we might be purr-fect for each other!

I am a rescue from outdoors. Some sweet souls took me in after I had been hanging about for months and their home was already filled with pets so they didn’t have a permanent spot for me but they made sure I was cared for, safe and loved until I got my chance to come to the shelter. I have lived outdoors and as a Tom cat I did my share of adventuring and I am happy and confident to say that is out of my system!

As a result of those reckless days of my youth I am FIV positive so considered a Special needs adoption. Many cats live long healthy lives with FIV especially if kept indoors and healthy. FIV affects the immune system so makes me more susceptible to colds, virus and other disease. Life is a gamble any way you look at it. Ready to roll the dice on me?

Most Special Piece of Mail Ever…With Love, From the King Family

By far one of the most special things I’ve ever received in the mail and one (of the many) times I have been incredibly proud of my students.

Back in 2006, just days after finishing the book I Have a Dream: The Story of Martin Luther King in class during our “Read Aloud” time, I learned that Coretta Scott King had died.  I shared the news with my students and, because we had just spent two weeks learning about Martin Luther King’s life, and family, and work…and probably in part because they knew of the many struggles, fights, tribulations, and ultimate tragedy that marked her life and the life of MLK and their children…they were very, very sad.

They immediately suggested that we write sympathy cards to her children.  They worked hard, spoke from their hearts, and shared their emotions and their admiration for the commitment and sacrifices that the King family made to try to make life better for others.

I found the King Center in Atlanta, Georgia and mailed the letters there…not knowing what would become of them. I watched parts of her funeral…where four presidents, more than a dozen senators, and Maya Angelou, amongst many others paid tribute…and felt sad.

Imagine my surprise, when four months later, an envelope arrived at school from “The King Family.”  While I know that what we received is the very same printed letter that hundreds, if not thousands of other people received, it still made me so incredibly proud of my students.  In some little way, their thoughts and words and love, had reached Yolanda, Martin, Dexter, and Bernice….those same young children (now grown) that they had read about in the book about MLK.  The same young children who watched their father inspire, and rally, and protect, and defend, and love, and sacrifice for others, had made certain to say “thank you” to my little group of twenty elementary students.

Taking care of a false rumor

Hello my friends and Gloucester business partners,
I just had another visitor (Fellow Shop Owner of Main Street) who was concerned because they had heard TBT Post was leaving.
That rumor is 100% false.
We love Gloucester and our customers & friends we have made here.
We have expanded our office space in the back of the TBT Post Main Street Store as well.
TB Post has also added a sectional couch in the store for customer convenience, a new service desk and dozens of new tables to enhance the store for our customers. TBT Post is currently shopping for a kids table that will allow children to color in an Alpaca pictures while mom and dad shop. More to come on that shortly once we have the prizes for the kids ready too.
We do continue to have more than one store with the opening of TBT Post Beverly and our MAB Corporate address continues to be 33 Main Street Gloucester as it has been since we opened here 3 years ago this spring.

If you should here this rumor please squash it and thank you.

We love you Gloucester!!!!

Quality Grill Parts Heavy Duty Stainless GrateThe @WeberGrills Smokey Mountain Smoker and Weber Rib Rack Review

More From Joey’s BBQ Blog-

After purchasing the Quality Grill Parts Heavy Duty Stainless Charcoal Baskets I was so impressed with how well they were built and the quality of the material I wanted to upgrade the grates on my 18.5 inch Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker.

I planned to cook up four racks of pork ribs for yesterday’s Pats/Texans playoff game.

Only problem was that fitting four slabs of spare ribs on an 18 inch WSM I was going to need to use a rib rack. The Weber Rib Rack for $12.99 is a nice value, purchase here.   It’s well built and designed.  The slots are spaced enough apart that the ribs don’t lean up against each other.  When comparing them to the Char Broil ones they both had nice builds but the Char Broil one had six slots instead of five which would have placed the ribs closer together and if the ribs…

No, NOT this kind of Big Mac ….

… THIS Kind of BIG MAC – mac

Join Today/Come Often is the Motto at the MAC.  I recently renewed my membership and made a commitment to myself to attend regularly. Whether at the Big MAC, Little MAC, or any of the number of fitness centers on Cape Ann, the key is to find at least one, two or three exercises you enjoy, can afford, and that fit into you lifestyle. Then, make time to engage in them regularly. Mix it up and have FUN!

MOTIF NO. 1 ON A WINTER’S MORNING

One more that I neglected to add from this past week’s snapshots taken around Rockport Harbor

rockport-harbor-motif-no-1-copyright-kim-smith

What goes up must come down!

David Brooks and friends taking down the buoys from our beloved Lobster Trap Christmas Tree.

I have to say that it would not be an exaggeration to say that thousands of photos were taken of the tree this year. People would just drive up, get out of their cars, take a picture and drive away. I met several from Europe taking them. Being able to walk inside has really made a difference it seems.

Don’t forget the auction of the boeys on January 27 at the Cruiseport!

Great job David and company!  Can’t wait till next year!  Well, in between it is going to be nice to have a great summer….

Thanks,
Ken Hecht

Steam in the Snow

It’s a bitter cold weekend up here in North Conway…-6 when I got up this morning, but it has warmed up to a balmy 10 degrees!  Doesn’t matter what the weather is, it’s always a great day when you can be outside, whether it be skiing, snowshoeing or just hanging out with my camera!    These pics I’m sharing today are taken a couple years ago and I chose to share them because if you love trains or just love photo ops, each year the Mass Railroad puts on a “Steam in the Snow” at the Conway Scenic Railroad in North Conway, NH.    It’s a ride through Crawford Notch and the train stops at a few spots along the way, everyone gets off, then it backs up and comes through with full steam so everyone can get some great pics!   The steam engine is under repair right now but it’s supposed to be ready for next year so if you are interested, check back in with the Mass Railroad and the Conway Scenic Railroad towards the end of next summer because it sells out fast.   Stay warm today!!untitled-3085-of-321-edit-edit-2untitled-3287-of-321_hdr-edit

Do you like Football? You’ll dig Yoga.

Yoga is just like football. Well, except for the fact that one of the very first tenets of yoga is Non-Violence (ahimsa), and football is an extremely violent game – yoga is just like football.

Tom Brady is one of the most successful athletes of all time in any sport. He knows that success isn’t decided on Sunday: but in the days, weeks, months, and years leading up to game time. One of my football coaches used to say:

“Cry in the dojo;

Laugh on the battlefield.”

He’s the first player at the training facility in the morning. You hear in the way he answers questions at press conferences his singular focus of preparing himself for the next game. His diet doesn’t consist of Nachos and Jack and Cokes, but wholesome and nourishing food. He isn’t staying up until midnight watching old movies, he’s asleep in bed well before most of…
