Spaces still available for SummerSTEM program!

Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute's avatarCape Ann Community

We were very happy to get feedback from our first group of students, on the last day of their week at Summer STEM: Fish Fraud Forensics:

“My favorite part of the course was when we extracted the DNA.  I felt like a real scientist!”

“I would recommend this course to my friends because it gives a good introduction to what it’s like to work in lab.”

“I would recommend this course because it was interesting, engaging and really educational.  We were all able to learn so much in just five days.”

Space is still available for our remaining two sessions starting on July 23rd and August 6th.

Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity!

Visit our website at gmgi.org/summerstem to learn more and download the registration forms.

42 PAIRS OF PIPING PLOVERS NESTING AT CRANES BEACH!

July 9th 2018 – From the Trustees “The Piping Plovers at Crane Beach are doing great this year! 42 pairs have nested making this the third highest amount of nesting Piping Plover pairs since 1986. So far 42 chicks have spread their wings and flown. Many more chicks are still on the beach and we are waiting on more nests to hatch. Please remember to keep your distance and give these protected birds their space.”

I love how the pale seashell coral pink in the clam shells mirrors the orange hues of the PiPl’s beak and legs. I don’t know why this photo strikes me as funny, but it just does. Tiny birds with huge personalities!

A FLOOD OF MONARCH SIGHTINGS, SOME SHARING THE BEST THEY’VE SEEN IN YEARS!!!

GMG Reader Leigh writes,
I just took this pict today (Tuesday July 17) and then saw your post tonight about sharing monarch picts. Spotted this one in my backyard in Rockport— on a zinnia, but near the swamp milkweed.
I enjoy your blog!
Pamela shares a recent sighting of a Baltimore Checkerspot at Appleton Farm.

Sharon M saw one at Wingaersheek, Catherine M at Niles Pond, M.J. in her Gloucester garden and one in Lanesville, Aurelia Nelson is seeing tons at her milkweed patch in Beverly, Beverly M saw one at Riverdale, Whitney C in East Gloucester, Peggy A at Old Garden Beach Rockport, Lisa W at Magnolia Avenue, Ellen A Beverly, Betty L Pasture Road Rockport, Nancy L at her milkweed field in Salem, and Patti Papows adds that hers are coming daily to her milkweed patch not by the ones and twos, but by the threes and fours!

Today at my presentation in Beverly Farms, the North Shore Garden Club ladies report seeing tons in their gardens, and today I saw them in my garden, and while checking on the Piping Plovers, they were in the dunes at Good Harbor and on the beach at Revere. If this warm weather continues, 2108 could prove to be a promising year for the Monarchs. Please keep your Monarch (and other butterflies, too) sightings coming. Thank you! And feel free to email us photos of sightings: kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com

Music on Meeting House Green

Gloucester resounds to the beat of Brazilian music at Gloucester Meetinghouse Summer Concert, July 27. The Somerville-based Brazilian band Os Forrozeiros will be delighting audiences at the Gloucester Meetinghouse Summer Concert on Friday, July 27, 6 – 9 pm, at the corner of Church and Middle Street.

The group began over ten years ago, using the beat of Brazilian Forro, to spread their love for the dance and music of their native country. Forro music began in northeastern Brazil. It embraces many different musical beats as well as dance styles. The Forrozeiros organization now includes a dance group, the Forrozeiros Dance Group, which has been together for the past two years, and practices in Somerville. The music and dance rhythms of this unique band will set your feet tapping and take you deep inside the culture of Brazil.

The concert is free. In the spirit of giving to the community, a spirit much celebrated by Os Forrozeiros, concert-goers are encouraged to make free-will donations to benefit Wellspring House. Founded in 1981 to provide shelter for homeless families, Wellspring House today
works to develop affordable housing, helps secure permanent homes for families, and provides education and job training for thousands of low-income adults. Bring cash or a checkbook, beach chairs or blankets. Food is provided by the Peabody Steak House, specializing in Brazilian food. In case of rain the concert will be held inside the Meetinghouse. Parking is available on Meetinghouse Green, in nearby lots, and at St. Peter’s Square.

Music on Meetinghouse Green’s sponsors include Linzee and Beth Coolidge; J.J. and Jackie Bell; Michael and Mary Bresnan; JoeAnn Hart and Gordon Baird; Harry and Mary Hintlian; Charles Nazarian; Dick and Doris Prouty; Sandra Ronan; Brent and Linda Wilkes; Tom and Kristin Zarrella; and the Cape Ann Savings Bank.

The primary goal at CFCA is to help our members increase their capability, durability (both mental and physical) and most importantly longevity through consistent quality movement in a fun and supportive environment. We have evolved over the years into what we’d consider more of a “lifestyle” crossfit gym. We focus on exercises that we feel have the best carryover to the demands of our member’s lives outside of the gym and less on competition or Crossfit as “sport”.
