Watching, Waiting

I love seeing the harbor from the perspective of the Fishermen’s Wives Memorial.

As Angela Sanfilippo, GFWA president, so eloquently said at the dedication ceremony:

“The memorial serves as a testimonial to what wives, mothers, sisters, and children of fishermen of the world have endured because their men chose to be on the water. They had no choice but to stand on rock, to be on land.”

Lobsta’ Land Outdoor Bar

The other day I did a post about the deck and outdoor bar at Lobsta’ Land. Only one photo shows up on the GMG facebook posts and I wanted everyone to see how cool the bar with its retractable roof really is….but, a different photo showed up in the post. So, here it is again for those of you who might not click through to the website.

Fishin’

Caught these two yesterday as they were hoping to catch something of their own. Bonus of having a permitted teenage driver is that now I can take photos from the passenger seat.

This Kid Just Turned 16

My older son, Thatcher, turned 16 yesterday…. And then drove his younger brother and me from Gloucester to Danvers today. Yikes. I’m used to him driving the boat…. But not so much as comfortable with him behind the wheel of my car.

Lobsta’ Land’s Outdoor Bar

The outdoor bar on Lobsta Land’s deck is a fantastic place to sit for a while. With its impressive retractable roof it is perfect in any weather. The food is always phenomenal and the schedule of live music and the view over the marsh makes it the ideal spot to spend an afternoon or evening.

Graham Nash at the Cabot

I was lucky enough to be invited to see Graham Nash at the Cabot Theater in Beverly last week. Way back in High School my friends and I would go see Crosby, Stills, and Nash at Great Woods every year. I remember those shows fondly for lots of different reasons. All these years later, I still love live music….be it a small intimate venue with an up-and-coming artist, stages all over cities like Nashville, a band playing outside on the waterfront….or, obviously, a big concert. I read somewhere a bit ago, “Life is short. Buy the damn concert tickets.” I feel that for sure! If you haven’t been to the Cabot recently you should. SUCH a great venue! Graham Nash was phenomenal. Not only has he not missed a beat in all of these years and still sounds amazing….but, my favorite part, was that every single song had a story. It was so fun to hear the inspiration…often really funny…behind each song.

Eyes Everywhere

I’m so thankful for the fact that there are eyes everywhere “on the island.” Finn is nearly 14 and is more often off fishing than not. This morning he woke up at 5:00 a.m. and took off on his bike to make a few casts before school. As is often the case, it wasn’t too long before someone sent a photo of him in search of fish. I love how much he loves to fish. And, I love that people are always looking out for him and keeping eyes on him. “Finn sightings” set my mind at ease.

Head to the Light

Last month I did a different post of a cool light fixture entitled “Head to the Light.” It was of one of the very nautical lights at Mile Marker. So, here’s a different light fixture. Does anyone know where this hangs? Do you ever look up?

Disease Overview

Summary

Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type IV (HSAN4 or HSAN IV) is a rare genetic disorder that usually begins in infancy and is characterized by an inability to feel pain and an inability to sweat (anhidrosis). Affected individuals also cannot feel temperature and cannot distinguish between hot and cold. The sensory loss in individuals with HSAN IV is due to abnormal functioning of the sensory nerves that control responses to pain and temperature. Anhidrosis can cause recurrent episodes of fever and high body temperature. An inability to feel pain can lead to unintentional self-mutation, repeated fractures, and joint damage. Affected individuals and especially children or infants may be unaware of injury delaying treatment. HSAN IV is caused by changes (mutations) in the NTRK1 gene. The disorder is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner.
