Communities like Gloucester that once depended on wild foods, in particular fish, have an especially interesting place in history. The relationship between food production and culture is represented in remarkable and surprising ways in the Cape Ann Museum, and this talk explores those multiple connections.

McGregor is the author of five books on the structure and social history of world cities.  His most recent book, Back to the Garden:  Nature and the Mediterranean World from Prehistory to the Present was published this year by Yale University Press. Also an emeritus professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Georgia, McGregor now lives in Cambridge, MA.  Mcgregor’s new book will be available for purchase in the Museum gift shop. A book signing will follow his lecture.

Tonight and Tomorrow Night at Diamond Cove Music

Artistry of the Guitar
with Ken Bonfield & Steve Davison

November 11, 7:00-9:00PMpm, $15

On Wednesday November 11, Ken Bonfield & Steve Davison will rekindle their national touring under the banner, Artistry of the Guitar. For those used to the in-the-round shows Bonfield has presented in the past, this will be a bit different.  As in most Artistry of the Guitar shows the two will each have a solo set lasting approximately 30 minutes, and that will be followed by 30 minutes of duets.  The duets are a bit of a change and something audiences have been asking for since the very beginning.  The music will be far ranging, from Celtic to Classical, Blues, Folk, Country, and include some good ol’ Travis thumbstyle fingerpicking. And as always they will be played on some amazing instruments; Bonfield’s Alan Carruth 11-string harp guitar and baritone guitar, and Davison’s Tony Yamamoto 12-string or his Sheldon Schwartz Oracle.

Fingerstyle Guitar Workshop: Basics to Beyond
with Ken Bonfield & Steve Davison

November 12, 7:30-9:00pm, $25

In this 90 minute workshop the guitarists will cover topics every guitarist should know; how to tune a guitar, how and when to change strings, how to properly hold the guitar, how to hold a pick, as well as discuss basic chord theory, and proper right and left hand technique. There will be plenty of time for Q & A. Bring a guitar, pencil, notepad and an open mind.

Local Artist Going Big!!

Chris Williams to Unveil “Nerve Center” in Kendall Square Essex

Artist Works with BioMed Realty to Beautify Park

Renowned New England sculptor Chris Williams and BioMed Realty are working together to bring a renewed sense of community culture and public art to the technology and innovation epicenter of Cambridge. On Tuesday, Nov. 10, they will unveil “Nerve Center,” a striking 25-foot-tall bronze and glass sculpture in Kendall Square’s newly renovated South Plaza Park.

The neuron sculpture is inspired by the creative thinking running through Kendall square, comprised of a twisted metal frame with pieces of slumped glass, weighing in at 5,000 pounds and illuminated from the inside. A tribute to the biotech area, “Nerve Center,” a permanent installation, will serve as an anchor in the newly designed public park along the Charles River.

The unveiling of the sculpture will take place Tuesday, Nov. 10 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Kendall Square’s South Plaza Park, located at 450 Kendall Street in Cambridge.

A third generation metal worker, Williams, 47, grew up in Rockport where he learned the trade of metal fabrication from his father. For years, he worked with steel and stainless metals before transitioning his passion for art into metal forming more raw materials, such as bronze, to create large life-Art installations of animals. The self-taught artist creates his pieces by hand in his Essex-based studio where he resides with his wife, Finella, and two boys, Thomas, 8, and Jackson, 10.

Williams’ upcoming projects include the installation of a horse sculpture for Simon Properties in Central Valley, NY; a customized ram being made for Framingham State University; a 10-foot high, 15-feet long glass and metal abstract lobby screen to improve the flow of BioMed’s office at 50 Hampshire St. in Cambridge; and large bronze bird installations for the towns of Marblehead and Ipswich. His work is featured in malls, airports, including Logan International Airport, universities, and prominent businesses across the country.

“I am very passionate about putting life into my work and creating installations that are both recognizable and yet provoke further thought,” says Williams. “Bronze is soft enough to mold by hand with the right tools, most of which I make myself. I have a basic connection to animals – they are uninhibited – and I like to capture the essence and movement of an animal so that people can say, ‘Hey, that’s a bird or a fish,’ and then take a closer look to realize the sculpture is all handmade pieces.”

Flatrocks Gallery will host a demonstration by artist Debbie Clarke

Sunday, November 8th at 4 pm.

Debbie Clarke-Above Sargent

“Action painting, sometimes called “gestural abstraction”, is a style of painting in which paint is spontaneously dribbled, splashed or smeared onto the canvas, rather than being carefully applied.” Debbie Clarke describes it as gesture drawing; except with paint, embracing the the concrete movement and relationship of shape, form, color, light. It is not haphazard and the paint is carefully applied as dictated through careful observation of the subject at hand.

Debbie will demonstrate her approach through several quick studies of 5 to 20 minute observations, a limited palette of red, white, blue and black, a few big brushes, a palette knife, soft pastels and egg. The painting will be raffled off with a suggested offering of $10. (All proceeds go to the artist).

Artist Reception for Sarah Wonson at Passports on Monday

Join us Monday November 2nd 6pm-9pm at Passports for a viewing of some of these special works.

Small bites will be available on us as well as a cash bar.

2015.10.03_whiteellery-3115

Sarah Wonson was born and raised in Gloucester, Massachusetts.  She graduated in 2007 from Massachusetts College of Art and Design with a BFA in Printmaking. Her main forms of expression are drawing and printmaking with a focus on landscape, still life, and repetitious patterns.  She has a love of nature and the world around her.  Trees, ocean, rocks, dirt, birds, animals in motion, plants, growth, driftwood, leaves, season transitions, repetition, craft, fabric design, woodgrain, New England architecture, windows, found objects, masonry, granite, shadows, night walks, graveyards, and maps drive her artistic practice.

Her art focuses on the act of observation, the importance of noticing and contemplating even the smallest moments in life.  “Observation is different from looking, to observe is to digest not just gaze.  Connection is lost when we do not observe, and when we lose connection we become detached from the world around us.”  Her most recent project, “Life Observed”, an installation that took place at the White-Ellery House, a historic home located at Grant Circle in Gloucester, presented a view of the human presence felt in the places we live and the objects we make.
