6 Wonson Street, Gloucester, MA 01930
Gallery hours, Thurs-Sun, 12:00-6:00 PM
True to its mission to celebrate artistic innovation in both the visual and performing arts, The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck presents the highly lauded musical group “What Time Is It Mr. Fox?” in concert on January 30, at 7:30 PM. The Boston Herald’s Barry Thompson states, “Time has come for Mr. Fox”; Adam Feldman of Time Out New York (critics pick) declares, “Catch him as his star rises!”; and Edge rhapsodizes, “A triumph of mood and style, an unforgettable musical, theatrical and emotional experience.”
Led by the gender-defying voice of Gloucester’s Brian King, and named after a Victorian children’s game, the ensemble “delivers their own brand of smoky cabaret, neo-soul and acoustic noir, sounding something like Tom Waits and Amy Winehouse performing in a French cafe.”
The “What Time Is It Mr. Fox” website describes, “The soul of the band is rooted in its songs – poetic, inventive, emotionally naked meditations on love, religion, sexuality, and identity in the tradition of songwriters like Leonard Cohen, Nina Simone, and Laura Nyro. The band also loves to re-imagine classics from Johnny Cash, Prince, and Joni Mitchell to Irish folk tunes and Appalachian murder ballads.”
Their original song “Cold Rain” was recently covered by New Orleans Soul Queen, Irma Thomas, on her Grammy-nominated CD “Simply Grand,” with the track earning high praise in Rolling Stone, USA Today & The VIllage Voice.
Not to be missed, the combination of bass, violin, keyboard and vocals presented by “What Time Is It Mr. Fox” offers a unique musical/theatrical experience.

Gallery Open May – October
Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck (formerly the Rocky Neck Gallery) is seeking new members for the 2016 season. A member-run, centrally located gallery under the umbrella of the Rocky Neck Art Colony, Gallery 53 exhibits and sells the work of 25 to 30 Cape Ann/North Shore artists to a customer base of local, national and international visitors. In 2015, over 14,000 art lovers visited the gallery, which is open seasonally from Memorial Day until Columbus Day.
“In addition to excellent artists who produce beautiful, saleable work,” said gallery manager Judy Robinson-Cox, “we want energetic, enthusiastic people who will pitch in and help run the gallery. A co-operative gallery is one where members share the day-to-day responsibilities of running the business – everything from strategic planning, marketing, party planning and record keeping to hanging the artwork and cleaning the floors.”
This year the gallery is especially interested in finding accomplished artists who work in media and artistic styles not currently represented in the gallery. This includes abstract painting, sculpture, glass arts, fiber arts, and other media with unique, distinctive styles. A group of Gallery 53 artists will review the artwork submitted by prospective members and evaluate it based on originality of concept, technical skill, marketability and appropriateness for Gallery 53. The prospective member’s ability to contribute to gallery operations will also be assessed.
Detailed information on how to apply and an application form are available at www.rockyneckartcolony.org/gallery-53-on-rocky-neck/. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2016. For more information call the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 978-515-7004.

UUSR Martin Luther King Jr. weekend events 2016
All are welcome this weekend at the Unitarian-Universalist Society of Rockport! We will commemorate and affirm the work and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, beginning with this Sunday’s 10:30 a.m. worship service devoted to the theme of Racial Justice. The next day, Monday 18 January, will be the 28th annual MLK Day march and service.
The march will begin at 10 a.m., at the U.U. Society of Rockport, 4 Cleaves Street and follow a route through downtown of about 1 mile. You are cordially invited to come at 9:30 to make signs (a favorite activity for the children.) After the march there will be the chance to warm up with hot cider before joining Rev. Susan Moran in a short service of readings and music honoring Dr. King. Guest speaker, Alexis A. Toliver, the co-lead organizer for Black Lives Matter in Cambridge and a Research Assistant in the Department of Neurobiology, Harvard Medical School, will speak about the meaning and goals of the Black Lives Matter movement.

This march began 28 years ago when 8 year old Lily Ruchman, having learned a bit about Dr. King, asked her mother if there could be a march. Her mother Anita, and her church community said Yes. We and many others from the North Shore have marched each year since then for the ideals Dr. King lived and died for: economic and racial equality, peaceful means to peaceful ends, dignity and freedom for all people.

-Icons of the Civil Rights Movement-

This inspiring exhibit is both a visual and a written history of the Civil Rights Movement, remembering and honoring the many who sacrificed their lives for freedom and equality. This exhibit features a series of paintings created by Pamela Chatterton-Purdy using handmade paper, oil paints, and found objects. Each of the thirty-five icons is accompanied by a historical description written by the Reverend Doctor David Purdy, her husband. The use of the iconic form represents the sacred nature of the Movement’s nonviolent philosophy. Setting this exhibit for sanctuary display during the Season of Advent invites association between the birth of Baby Jesus and his life showing a way of light, truth, sacrifice, and justice for all the world. This exhibit also stands in the spirit of the national United Church of Christ initiative since 2008, to hold sacred conversations on matters of race – locally, nationally, and globally.
In Eastern Christian tradition, icons are religious paintings on wood panels depicting scenes from the Bible. They are often set in a golden background or covered with silver. The style is idealized, suggesting the sacred nature of the subject. Icons are venerated for their theological teachings of the church. Chatterton-Purdy was inspired by icons to create a body of work representing people committed to social justice.
Some of the subjects are well known, such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Emmett Till, Rosa Parks,
Jonathan Daniels, and Rev. James Reeb. The exhibit celebrates all of their lives and their common mission. To create the icons, Chatterton-Purdy used wooden objects, pieces of broken frames, hinged doors, broken stained glass, and wooden birds taken from an old carved jewelry box in pieces. There are yardsticks cut at number 14, the age that Emmett Till’s life was taken. There are pieces of a children’s chess set used to imply the handles of a Torah. Alphabet beads are strung together to spell The Children’s Campaign, Birmingham Alabama, over 1,000 children jailed. Broken metal chains and locks – signs of freedom and release – and verses from Scripture are also used. Each icon was designed to highlight the uniqueness of each person or event.
Pamela Chatterton-Purdy earned a master of fine arts degree from the University of Massachusetts. Her husband, the Reverend Doctor David Purdy is a retired Methodist minister.
They live in Harwich Port, Massachusetts, on the other Cape!
