Swimming in Seattle!

Gloucester’s own….Meghan Colby of Cape Ann Sharks Special Olympics (YMCA North Shore)  has been selected as one of four athletes for Swim Team Massachusetts at the Special Olympics USA National Games

King-County-Aquatic-Center

downloadThe Special Olympics USA National Games (www.specialolympicsusagames.org) will take place July 1-6, 2018 in Seattle Washington. Venues will include the University of Washington, Celebration Park, Pacific University Seattle University, King County Aquatic Center and many more. We are proud to be sending a delegation of 50 athletes and unified partner in honor of the 50 th anniversary of Special Olympic movement as coaches and staff to represent
Massachusetts.
The National Games will feature nearly 3,500 athletes competing in 14 Olympic-style sports, with the support of 1,000 coaches, 8,000 volunteers and an estimated 50,000 family, friends and spectators. Non-competitive special events will include the Final Leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run™ that will symbolize the start of the competition and Healthy Athletes, a place where the athletes can get vital health screenings. Youth and education events will also be held in conjunction with the Games as young leaders rally around making change for the better of the Special Olympics movement and promoting acceptance of those with intellectual disabilities.
The 2018 Games will bring an estimated 80,000 people to the greater Seattle area. It is projected, based upon past Special Olympics Games, that hotel room nights, dining, shopping, car rentals, tourism and more could reach $50 million during the week of the Games.
As you can imagine, the cost to cover clothing, housing, dining, medical, public safety, and transportation for this amount of individuals is astronomical. Please support Gloucester’s Meghan Colby as she represents Cape Ann proudly at USA Games- Seattle in July. Click here to donate!

KT Morse One-Artist Show

Finding Beauty in the Everyday

An exhibition of recent oil and watercolor paintings by artist KT Morse will open in the Marguerite Pearson Room of the Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M) on Saturday, March 17th with an artist’s reception from 2 – 4 PM.  The exhibition will be on view Saturday, March 17 – Thursday, March 29.

KT Morse earned a BFA at the University of Massachusetts in Art Education in 1976.  While an undergraduate, she studied many fields of art, including bronze-casting Sculpture at Mount Holyoke College, Silversmithing at Oregon State University and Watercolor Painting and Silkscreen Printing at Amherst College.  Her love of watercolor painting was propelled by classes with Carl Schmalz, a protege of Eliot O’Hara, who traveled and painted plein air, writing many books on watercolor. She began painting plein air in 1973 and has continued to work outdoors since that time.

During her time at the UMass, she was employed as a Silversmithing Instructor at the UMass Craftshop and at the Oregon State University Craftshop.  For many years, she considered herself a silversmith, making jewelry and selling her work through craft fairs and classes.  She continued her study of metals at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and eventually studied forging and raising with Master Silversmith Alan Place at Old Newbury Crafters in Amesbury, MA.

But the love of painting persisted, and in 2001, she renewed her interest in watercolor painting at a summer workshop on Monhegan Island with renowned artist Paul George.  She began to study oil painting and found a new freedom of expression in the medium, creating large 4’x5′ canvases of local landscapes. KT has been accepted as an artist member of the Hudson Valley Art Association, North Shore Arts Association, Rockport Art Association & Museum and the National Association of Women Artists.  She has received numerous awards for her work.

KT and Paul are now married and travel extensively, participating in national plein air events. Together they own a gallery at Rocky Neck Art Colony in Gloucester, MA on beautiful Cape Ann.

Workshops, Classes and Coaching with Nadine Boughton

RISING UP
Workshops, Classes and Coaching
with Nadine Boughton

Exploring the Feminine, The Rising

Sunday, March 4, 1-4pm   $70 Gloucester

Untitled-1Many traditions mark the rising of spring in mid-February when a thrumming begins deep in the earth. Feminine archetypes speak of “the Return.” What was buried through the winter now begins to wake and rise up. Shoots of green return, sparks of revelation appear. In this workshop we’ll listen to what is rising in us and how we might engage with this part of the creative cycle. There will be space for writing and voice; poetry and image; and sharing in a supportive circle of women.

Writing from the Body

Wednesdays: Feb. 28, March 7, 14, 21; 10am-12pm $200 Gloucester

Words live in the body, rise up from the marrow. Writing is full of physicality, the hand moves across paper with each breath and our voice carries an aliveness whether written or spoken. This is a writing series to foster the unbridled and embodied voice. Through prompts and poetry, silence and sound, we’ll discover what is cooking in the body’s imagination turning toward Spring.

Creativity Coaching for Art and Life

Individual coaching for those seeking support in defining a project or moving forward an existing project, such as art or writing. Support as well for those desiring to move beyond stuck places in their life. Life as collage, bringing resolution and harmony to the pieces we endlessly shuffle. Practical, playful, grounded, transformational.

Cape Ann Artisans Tour

Cape Ann Artisans Announce Details for 35th Anniversary Open Studios

image004.jpgThe Cape Ann Artisans have set the schedule for 2018.  The Spring Tour will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 2-3.   The Fall Tour will encompass the entire three day Columbus Day Weekend, Oct 6-8 which falls during American Craft Week (Oct 6-15), a national celebration.  The tour time is 10AM-5PM.  The Holiday Show will return during Rockport’s Main Street festivities in early December alongside Shop Rockport night.

Among the new developments for 2018, the Artisans are in discussion with a local tour operator to put a real “tour” option in place.   This would provide a convenient alternative to those that would like to hop on a mini-bus vs. drive their own vehicles.

Also exciting is the expansion of the “Cape Ann Artisans in the Community” event throughout the year.   If you have a regular meeting where your organization would appreciate exposure to this group, the Artisans will create an on-site display and mini-presentation to provide some insight as to role in the community, education, and quality of life that is enhanced by the presence of working artists.  Meet the artists, hear about the CAA history and help share the story with your community.   To request a visit by the artisans, please send a note to Jackie via info@CapeAnnArtisans.com.

The Artisans thank the community for its continued support of its partner program that includes sponsorships on the brochure and online.  Annually, the Artisans print and distribute over 12,000 brochures which are distributed throughout the region.  The annual printed brochure with the Cape Ann map outlining the tour, will be finalized in early February and a few places are still available for local businesses.  Those interested  should contact Sinikka Nogelo [snogelo@yahoo.com] before January 31 to secure one of the limited spaces.  Online-only sponsorships are accepted on a rolling basis.

The Tour will include 20 studios and 23 Artisans, with several working as husband and wife teams and Ruth Worrall teaming up with Bart Stuyf at his studio.  The Artisans newest member is Andy Matlow, who creates sculptural and functional ceramics and Judith Wright returns from sabbatical.  The 2018 Artisans are:

  1. David Archibald
  2. Cynthia Curtis
  3. Rob Diebboll
  4. Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco
  5. Deborah Gonet
  6. Elizabeth Harty
  7. Camilla MacFadyen

Cape Ann Narratives of Art in Life

A Discussion at the Cape Ann Museum

image004.jpgThe Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present Cape Ann Narratives of Art in Life: A Discussion on Saturday, January 13 at 3:00 p.m.  This program is free for CAM members and Cape Ann residents or with Museum admission. Reservations are not required. Call (978)283-0455 x10 for more information.

Join Martin Ray and several of the artists featured in his new book Cape Ann Narratives of Art in Life. Ray’s work explores the artistic talent that local residents have brought to their occupations. Whether one is a writer or woodworker, pastor or painter, mayor or musician, Ray classifies each as an artist, and celebrates the mastery that is exhibited in his/her craft. Panelists include Anne Deneen, pastor; Nan Webber, theater director; Brian King, musician; and Stephen Bates, musician/sculptor.

During the month of January the Museum opens its doors to all Cape Ann residents, in an effort to encourage membership, but also to bring the greater community into closer contact with their art, history and culture. This program will do just that, shedding light on locals who take pride in their craft with unwavering commitment and dedication. Does pursuing one’s vocation make one an artist? You decide.

Help Windhover Continue to Thrive

WindHover-logo.jpg

Windhover Center for the Performing Arts needs your help and support for 2018. We have exciting plans for this next summer of 2018 which includes a return of the great Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company to Windhover in August. The entire company will be in residence to perform Taylor repertory, teach master classes, and engage in some community based programs such as open rehearsals and exchanges of ideas about dance in today’s world.

The Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre will return to Windhover to teach a week-long dance intensive for teenagers in July. This will be followed by Quarry Dance 7, performed for the public for free at the MANSHIP QUARRY located in the Lanesville section of Gloucester. Paul Manship was a great 19th century American sculptor who settled in Cape Ann and purchased a home and studio on the site of two quarries in Lanesville. This magical 15 acre site is now a non-profit retreat for artists, and Quarry Dance 7 will highlight the terraces and grounds, the historic barn, granite garden and the twin quarries. Parking has been arranged at the Lanesville Community Center nearby, so the Quarry Dance plans are in place quite early this year.

All of these events depend upon the support of this engaged community and of those who love the arts, and dance in particular. Windhover is a non-profit 501© 3 organization. Please consider a year end donation in any amount to help us fulfill our mission and to bring these programs to the public in 2018. You can donate through the website: www.windhover.org or by sending a check to: Windhover, P.O Box 2249, Rockport, MA. 01966

Thank you for your assistance and for your help in continuing the legacy and dream of Windhover Center for the Performing Arts into 2018 and beyond.
