the shaman show - John Tarrant May 23 - paperless post, pg2 - FINAL.jpg

IMG_7352.jpgJOHN TARRANT is the Founding Director of Pacific Zen Institute — an organization devoted to koans, the arts, and spirituality as a creative act. He has pioneered the development of koans as a method for understanding the mind in Western culture. John has a PhD in psychology, teaches physicians and executives at Duke Integrative Medicine, and for many years had a practice in Jungian psychotherapy.

John Tarrant:  “I’m interested in Zen as a way that transforms the mind. There’s a dance between innovation and tradition, the way there is in English poetry… A koan is a doorway. Strangely enough these imaginative little poems and stories and dialogues open into something more real than the usual stories the mind makes up.”

In this talk:  “the artists as shaman” – John will talk about how “creativity comes from where the shaman goes…”

Tarrant:  “…Mountains, rivers & the great earth, the sun, the moon & the stars are no other than your own heart and mind…”

Loren Doucette at the flatrocks gallery

Loren Doucette presents a 4-Day Open Studio Event showcasing over 40 paintings.

Open Reception: Saturday May 12th 6-8pm

Flatrocks Gallery 77 Langsford Street Gloucester, MA

Loren_Doucette-1080pxwww.lorendoucetteart.com

After a prolific winter at Flatrocks Gallery, Doucette invites the public to view over 40 of her drawings and paintings (complete and in process) created in the last 2 years as well as select pottery pieces by Ruth Worell.

Doucette opens Flatrocks Gallery to the public in a unique way showing a transparent look into the process of drawing and painting. On display are over 40 paintings showing a variety of different sized works, multiple media, and various subject matter; an intimate window into the artist’s view of the world around her.  She says, “I work on multiple paintings at once letting the different ideas feed one another. This is how a series is born during my indoor winter studio practice. This show is like an open sketchbook of ideas strewn across the walls in full color.”

Doucette, usually a landscape painter, explores new ways of working intuitively in her latest work. She says, “I move back and forth drawing and painting from the world of form to departing from it all together; the process excites and surprises me. I am a teacher and a painter, so sharing the process is as important to me as sharing the finished product.”

Loren Doucette has shown in solo and group shows since 2007. She attended the School for the Museum of Fine Arts in 1997 and continued her studies at Montserrat College of Art from 2006-2013 where she received her BFA in Painting and Drawing. Doucette studied abroad in Viterbo, Italy for a month in 2011 where her love of landscape painting was recharged. She currently teaches weekly classes in Drawing and Painting at Ten Pound Studio in Gloucester, MA and is also currently represented by the Tusinski Gallery in Rockport, MA, http://www.tusinskigallery.com.

Doucette’s 4-Day Open Studio Event at Flatrocks Gallery is open to the public May 10, 11, 12 and 13 from 12-5pm each day with an open reception on Saturday evening from 6-8pm. She welcomes private showings by appointment from May 10th to May 18th. Please contact the artist for an appointment at lorenadoucette@gmail.com.

Friends of the Rockport Library

And hello dear Friends of the Library.

images.jpg

The bright light in this past dreary April was seeing many of you. We connected when you worked and shopped at the Book Sale, and we celebrated those of you who volunteer for the RPL and FOL at our Appreciation Reception. It always feels good to link with our members and experience the common bond of our commitment to our extraordinary library.
As an organization, we have achieved some notable successes already this spring. We made a positive difference in advocating for library funding, and we raised $3,000+ for library programming through our Spring Book Sale. Behind the scenes, your FOL Board is facilitating support for library staff education, launching a book-donation drive, designing a membership drive, organizing a Motif #1 Day mini-sale of books, CDs, and DVDs, planning a July Book Sale from 7/19-7/22, and arranging our Annual Meeting with a special performance by Sheryl Faye as Abigail Adams. (We heard great reviews of Sheryl as Eleanor Roosevelt — we are bringing her back by popular demand!)

DYB Poster.jpg

As you can see, your Friends’ Board has ambitious goals and a busy schedule. You are part of it all. Actually, you are the most important part of it all! Membership is our financial foundation, and your active participation makes our work possible.
Here are dates to note. Mark your calendars, and please contact us if you can help with these coming events. One thing we can all do is spread the news about our mission and activities and encourage others to join us as Friends of the Rockport Library.
