My View of Life on the Dock

Jane Deering Gallery presents Jeffrey Marshall | Working the Waterfront with an opening reception for the public on Saturday December 15th from 4:00-6:30pm @ 19 Pleasant Street, Gloucester. Marshall moved into his studio on Gloucester’s Morse-Sibley Wharf in 2016 and began months of observing, drawing and painting the life and rhythms at the wharf, most often watching the fishermen’s pick-up trucks that filled the area under his studio. In Marshall’s words “ …. trucks pull up cab to cab to talk, or haul gear, and might stay for hours, days, or minutes.” These works soon became a visual document — a reflection — respecting the movements and surroundings, the friendships and struggles of fishermen and lobstermen, at work at a specific place; and, too, connecting Marshall more strongly to the city he now calls home. The gallery will be open Saturdays and Sundays 1:00-4:00pm and by appointment through January 27, 2019. Works in the exhibition can be viewed at janedeeringgallery.com info@janedeeringgallery.com . 917-902-4359

Where else can you see Santa arrive by lobster boat? Santa will arrive at Rockport’s T-Wharf on Rockport Harbor on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 1:00 PM, following a brisk lobster boat ride across Sandy Bay. Then Santa will climb up onto a Rockport Forest Fire truck and proceed along T-Wharf and Broadway to Spiran Hall (at the corner of Broadway and School Street) led by Rockport cub scouts. This year Santa will be able to linger a while to visit and have photos taken with the children at Spiran Hall until the Tree Lighting Ceremony begins. Then Santa will head over to Dock Square to greet the crowd and kick off the Tree Lighting festivities, before climbing back onto the fire truck to begin his long return journey to the North Pole.
The Tree Lighting Ceremony will get underway at 4 PM welcoming Santa and the public to Dock Square with carols and a stirring rendition of “Christmas in Rockport” performed by the Dock Square Carolers.
The Chairperson of the Board of Selectmen will offer official greetings from the Town and will conclude the ceremony by pulling the switch to light this year’s Rockport Christmas tree.

The Cape Ann Artisans (CAA) invite the community to meet them Under One Roof at the Rockport Art Association (12 Main Street) on November 30 and December 1 for their 5th annual holiday show timed to coincide with Rockport’s “Holiday Shopping Night” festivities and Santa’s arrival in Rockport.

Color Transitions – An exhibition of oil paintings by artist Olga Gernovski will open in the Marguerite Pearson Room of the Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M) on Saturday, November 24th with an artist’s reception from 2 – 4 PM. The exhibition will be on view Saturday, November 24 – Thursday, December 6.
Olga’s paintings show the celebration of sunlight through the leaves, through the flowers, and the inspiration of what nature is generously giving us every day. This exhibition represents fall, Olga’s favorite time of year – the most colorful season, and opens Thanksgiving weekend when people are grateful for many things in life.
“I wish for the people looking at my paintings to feel the acuteness of a red blossom, transparency of glass, rushing forces of nature and the thrill of human emotions. At those moments, lines flow as music and every artwork is a confession.”

Wild Flora and Fauna of Cape Ann in Cubes – An exhibition of oil paintings by Gloucester artist Paul Ciaramitaro will open in the Marguerite Pearson Room of the Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M) on Saturday, November 10th with an artist’s reception from 2 – 4 PM. The exhibition will be on view Saturday, November 10 – Wednesday, November 21. Paul Ciaramitaro is primarily a realist painter, however, he occasionally enjoys painting in a Cubist style and his creative explorations in Cubism are featured in this exhibit.
Paul Ciaramitaro, a lifelong resident of Cape Ann, began his love of art as a child. Over the years, he has been influenced by the Renaissance artists, as well as Aldro Hibbard, Emile Gruppe and especially Charles Movalli. In the 1970’s, Paul became a student of Movalli’s and was deeply inspired by him. He told Paul, “If you learn something from every painting you do, you will become an artist.”
In between his grueling hours as a commercial fisherman and dockworker, Paul sketched and painted in his spare time and worked hard to glean all that he could from his mentors. His commitment and talent led him to become a well-established and accomplished Cape Ann artist. His paintings have won many awards and his work can be found in both private and corporate collections, as well as in prestigious galleries and museums such as the Cape Ann Museum.
Over the past several decades, Paul has taught numerous classes and workshops, which have been widely attended, and he has served as a juror for many exhibitions. He is a juried artist member of both the North Shore Arts Association and the Rockport Art Association & Museum.
When asked about being an artist Paul says, “I’m serious about it. I’m passionate about it and I love it!”
Open Tuesday – Saturday 10 AM – 5 PM; Sunday 12 – 5 PM. For more information on this and other shows, please visit the RAA&M’s website at www.rockportartassn.org

Medley – An exhibition of paintings by Barbara Donnelly will open in the Marguerite Pearson Room of the Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M) on Saturday, October 27th with an artist’s reception from 2 – 4 PM. The exhibition will be on view Saturday, October 27 – Thursday, November 8.
“A New England native, I have a natural love of the seacoast. Wherever I am in the world, the water, boats, nearby villages and the local people have a spirit that engages me. To saturate my paintings with the color, light and life that embrace their true “essence” is my desire. To ‘capture the moment’ en plein air is pure pleasure.” – Barbara Donnelly
Donnelly, painting her whole life and an art graduate of Boston University, had an art studio/gallery on the working waterfront on Harbor Loop, Gloucester for twenty-two years until 2015. Previously she had a working studio in the Gloucester Academy for fifteen years. Currently she paints in a studio in downtown Beverly and in her lake house studio in NH.
As well as painting New England, she has enjoyed painting abroad, studying the varying light, landscape and architecture in France, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Puerto Rico, Portugal and China. Her work has found collectors in each of these countries.
“A life-defining moment was winning an international award of an Artist-in-Residency to paint in France. Living alone for two months in a small cottage by a canal, I made friends, became fluent in the language and have returned to different regions of France frequently to paint. Being invited to have a six week long One Artist Exhibition of the French paintings at l’Ambassade de France (French Embassy) in Washington, D.C. was an exciting experience and a singular honor for an American artist.”
– Barbara Donnelly
An award winning artist and popular teacher, Barbara has conducted painting workshops and painting demonstrations from her studios and for art associations and other organizations.

The Paint! Paint! Paint! exhibition at the Cultural Center Studio Gallery features a collection of more than 20 recent paintings in oil of recognizable Rocky Neck locations by resident artist, Stephen LaPierre. Following in the traditions of the many well-known artists who preceded him, from Milton Avery to Edward Hopper and many others, LaPierre recently was seen in the streets and byways of “the Neck” at all times of day, and even night, at his easel to capture the light and mood of the scene before him in paint.

Paint! Paint! Paint! is being held in the Cultural Center Studio Gallery in the same time period, October 18 through November 18, 2018, as LANDFALL, the Montserrat College of Art exhibit on view on the upper level Cultural Center Gallery.
The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening receptions for both exhibits on Saturday, October 20, 4:00–6:00 PM at the Cultural Center galleries at 6 Wonson St, Gloucester, MA. The building is handicap accessible with gallery hours Thursday through Sunday from 12:00 – 4:00 PM each week.

“When You go into the Woods,” features oil paintings by Vanessa Michalak highlighting some of Cape Ann’s well known gems. Works depict imagery of a variety of places including Annisquam Village, Lanesville’s Vernon Quarries and Babson’s Dogtown boulders. The exhibition will be on display throughout October at Jane Deering Gallery, Gloucester, MA with and opening reception scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6th from 6pm-8pm.

The Exhibition, “When You Go Into The Woods” is a reflection of Michalak’s exploration of Cape Ann and her ongoing investigation of the painting process. The works reflect a fascination with a specific place and its hidden treasures. Many of the works are plein air paintings that brought her to the edges of quarries and sent her trekking through Dogtown’s rocky paths. As much as these works pay tribute to a specific place, they also reflect Michalak’s gestural painting style that at times borders on abstraction. Much like her wanderings in the woods, there is a sense that she doesn’t mind getting a little lost in brushwork, layering and mark before finding her destination.

Michalak grew up in Maine before moving to Boston where she lived and worked for over a decade. While living in Boston she visited Cape Ann often and eventually moved to Gloucester last year. She earned her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 2013 and has attended many notably residencies including Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Snowmass Village, CO and Playa, Summer Lake, OR. Her work was featured in New American Paintings#110 and she was selected as a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellow in Painting in 2014.

The Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M) is one of the oldest and most active art organizations in the country. The Association has a long and distinguished history that has spanned 96 years.

An exhibition of diverse watercolor and water media paintings by Gloucester artist Marilyn Swift will open in the Marguerite Pearson Room of the Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M) on Saturday, September 29th with an artist’s reception from 2 – 4 PM. The exhibition will be on view Saturday, September 29 – Thursday, October 11.
Marilyn Swift has been an Artist Member of the Rockport Art Association & Museum since 1978 (40 Years!). She has been awarded numerous prizes for her watercolors, not only at the RAA&M but also at juried shows throughout the Northeast. Upon earning her BA at The College of New Rochelle in NY, she taught art in the Norwood Public Schools.
“My paintings are direct responses to visual stimuli. While others use words or music or gestures, I paint. Watercolor is, for me, the vehicle that generally works best. When a subject dictates, I will paint in oil or acrylic; but I always return to watercolor. I am a dedicated plein air painter, inspired not only by Cape Ann, but also by travels both near and abroad. Over the years, I have studied with noted artists whose works I admire, yet I continually strive to express my own voice. My work can be described as emotional realism incorporating careful drawing, planning along with thoughtful editing, and good design.” – Marilyn Swift
Please check out Marilyn’s website: marilynswift.com for further information about her affiliations and visiting her East Gloucester Studio/Gallery.
Open Tuesday – Saturday 10 AM – 5 PM; Sunday 12 – 5 PM. (Open Mondays through October 15.) For more information on this and other shows, please visit the RAA&M’s website at www.rockportartassn.org
