Canadian sculpture and video artist, Matthew Trueman, was chosen as the Rocky Neck Art Colony’s 2019 Goetemann Environmental/Installation Artist.  Truman is currently building on a series called Instruments for Landscapes that utilizes musical and clockwork technology powered by found sources of energy to create autonomous instruments tuned to specific landscapes.  He plans to create a similar piece for his Goetemann Residency project at Ocean Alliance, 32 Horton Street, in Rocky Neck.

Truemann will give an opening talk at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 3 at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester. He will show and talk about his completed project at 6:00 PM on Thursday, September 26 at Ocean Alliance. The public is also invited to watch Truemann at work anytime by walking up Horton Street to Ocean Alliance anytime from September 4 to 22.

Trueman_Instrument-for-Inquiry_Whole-View_2018-650x366.jpg
Instrument for Inquiry installation by Matthew Trueman

A central theme of Truemann’s work is an exploration of space using our ears, as opposed to our eyes, as the primary source of information. This shift of sense is especially relevant for understanding marine animals that rely far more on acoustics that humans.

The Instruments for the Landscapes series aims to allow us to listen closer by making sound. To do this the sculpture, and ultimately the listener, must absorb, respond and harmonize with the elemental and ecological sounds of the coastline.

The sculpture powers itself using energy from the wind, water or the sun to create an output that works like a telescope, allowing listeners access into the depth of the soundscape around them.

About Matthew Truemann

A Canadian sculpture and video artist who completed his MFA at Western University in 2018, Truemann is a resident of London, Ontario. He employed his woodworking background to found an environmentally responsible furniture business called Joined Habitat.  See http://www.matthewtrueman.com/#/instrument-for-inquiry-into-the-melody-of-the-landscape/ to see and hear examples of Truemann’s prior constructions. Matthew Truemann’s residency is sponsored by Karen Ristuben.

The Goetemann Artist Residency of the Rocky Neck Art Colony and the Cape Ann Museum are collaborating to present “A Conversation with Joan Snyder and Molly Snyder-Fink” at the Cape Ann Museum, 27 Pleasant Street, Gloucester on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at 2:00 PM.  Joan Snyder and her daughter Molly Snyder-Fink will be in conversation about her work and accompanied by images. The event is free and open to the public with a reception following the talk. Registration for seating is suggested on line at camuseum.eventbrite.com or by calling 978 283-0455 ext.10.

This special program inaugurated in 2008 invites a nationally known artist to speak at the Cape Ann Museum followed by a four-day workshop.  This year the workshop is being held at the Montserrat College of Art studios.

Joan Snyder is a national treasure.  She has without question stood her creative, inventive, personal ground with the great painters of the last 50 years.  Her work is very much about her lived experience and being accessible to the viewer. Snyder, well known to the art world, has been honored as a Guggenheim Fellow, National Endowment for the Arts Fellow and MacArthur Fellow. Her work is currently on view in an exhibition “Epic Abstraction” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.  Snyder first gained public attention in the early 1970s with her gestural and elegant “stroke paintings,” which used the grid to deconstruct and retell the story of abstract painting. By the late seventies, Snyder had abandoned the formality of the grid. She began more explicitly incorporating symbols and text, as the paintings took on a more complex materiality. These early works were included in the 1973 and 1981 Whitney Biennials and the 1975 Corcoran Biennial.

“The functions of Ms. Snyder’s art, first and foremost, are to further the tradition of painting and to explore the most serious aspects of the human condition; to connect us not only to one another and to nature but to ancient rites and myths. She reminds us that no matter how modern and civilized we are, art can still be raw, primitive and talismanic. Without apologies or decorum, Ms. Snyder’s work awakens all of the things still wild within us.”Lance Esplund. “Lady of the Wild Things”. The Wall Street Journal, April 27,2011, p. d6

Quarry Dance Vlll Recap and More Dance

image001
Photo: David Watts Jr.

Halibut Point Quarry was transformed in late July by the Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre who bedazzled the landscape in saffron and mustard yellow costumes and took center stage for a moment in time. Perched like birds on the quarry cliffs, first hovering, then gliding and cascading, the dancers interfaced with the seagulls in brilliant choreographic tandem! Windhover Performing Arts Center has produced eight quarry dances so far, and each one is unique and site-specific, utilizing the characteristics of each particular quarry landscape. All of us who were present at a performance witnessed the art of dance and music enlivened by nature… a perfect trio!

Those who missed it this year, stay tuned for more live dance happenings this summer when Windhover Performing Arts Center hosts the Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company starting Wednesday, September 4–Saturday, September 7, 2019. The week explodes with three Master Classes in modern dance for all ages and levels, two open rehearsals, plus two evening dance performances of Paul Taylor’s works. The schedule is as follows: Master classes offered on Wednesday, September 4 from 6:00-7:30pm; Thursday, September 5 from 9:30am-11:00am; and Saturday, September 7 from 9:30-11:00am. Please come. Composition in Green, 14 ½” x 14 ½” fused glass by Ingrid Pichler

The Rocky Neck Art Colony welcomes glass artist Ingrid Pichler, Painting with Light, as Gallery 53’s third Summer Artist this season. The show is open from August 7 to September 3 with the Opening Reception on Saturday, August 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck, located at 53 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester, is open daily from May 25 to October 14, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Sunday through Thursday, and until 8:00 PM Friday and Saturday. For more information visit rockyneckartcolony.org/gallery-53-on-rocky-neck/ or call 978-282-0917.

In her exhibition, Painting With Light, Ingrid Pichler manipulates reflected and transmitted light. She captures everyday moments and applies them onto glass using traditional techniques such as glass painting, staining and fusing.

Pichler has worked in architectural glass for almost thirty years. Her hands-on approach has enabled her to develop a keen understanding of the transformative potential of light in the context of architectural glass. Most of her works have been commissioned, location-specific installations, utilizing a wide range of techniques from traditional painting and staining, to new innovation for fusing and casting in contemporary glass technology.

Originally from northern Italy, Pichler studied art and design, and architectural glass in the UK before moving to the United States where she now lives with her family in Massachusetts. She works from her studio in Swampscott, and guest lectures in stained glass at Salem State University.

Rockport Gallery Celebrates Five Years: Illuminations Weekend

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

When Rockport artist David Arsenault and his wife, Rev. Sue Koehler-Arsenault, opened a gallery in March 2015, they felt like they were in an ideal place to share his light-filled, colorful work. Now in their fifth year and at a location just 200 yards away from the first, it appears as if they were right.

In the half-decade since Arsenault sold his first Cape Ann oil painting, the Old Garden Road-inspired “Swaying in Time”, he and his wife have not only sold over 1100 works of art, but they have become active contributors to the Cape Ann community.

“It was important to us when we opened the gallery to do two things: to be able to help support local non-profits and to make David’s work accessible to people across many income levels,” says his wife, Sue. “We both feel so fortunate to live here on Cape Ann. Every day we are aware of the beauty that surrounds us and feel grateful to be part of such a supportive art community. We have made so many friends here and have been delighted to meet people who come to Rockport from all over the world.”

To celebrate their success since opening, the Arsenaults will host a 5th Anniversary Party over Illuminations Weekend on Friday, Aug. 9th from 5-8 p.m. at their 8 Dock Square gallery in Rockport.  Local favorites Jace Mason and Rhiannon Hurst will entertain guests with jazz guitar and vocals. And a 24” x 18” canvas giclee print of Arsenault’s latest Motif painting, “Mirror Motif” will be raffled in support of the Open Door, the same non-profit they supported during their Grand Opening Celebration in 2014. Raffle tickets may be purchased at the gallery or online at artofdavid.com/more-art.

The gallery has supported dozens of non-profits, ranging from the Open Door to Rockport Illuminations to the First Congregational Church of Rockport’s Steeple Fund to the Thacher Island Association to Senior Care, raising thousands of dollars.

After working 20 years in his private upstate New York studio, Arsenault shares “When we first opened the doors, I wondered what it would be like to try to paint while also welcoming guests. Now I sit right in the front window! What I learned is that when people see some of their favorite Rockport and Gloucester places depicted in my artwork, they come in and open up to share favorite memories and thoughts and feelings about themselves and Cape Ann. It’s a privilege to experience people reflecting on their lives simply because they connect with something they see or feel in my art. Since opening the gallery, I’ve met thousands of fascinating people and had some of the most interesting conversations of my life here. It’s been more fun than I ever imagined.”

Like many artists who have called Cape Ann home or visited, Arsenault ultimately felt compelled to try his hand at painting the iconic Motif No.1.  “It is has been painted so often and by so many of the greats. I wondered how I could approach it in a way that I had not seen done before.” His first Motif painting, entitled “Center of Attention” achieved his goal.  The oil painting was acquired by local collectors, and Arsenault has now sold over two hundred canvas giclée prints of the image as well. When Rockport innkeepers decided to publish a cookbook, “Center of Attention” was chosen for the cover.

Since that first Motif painting, Arsenault has decided to paint a different view of the Motif each year. His second Motif painting, “Taking the Other Side” (2016) was featured on the poster for the 2017 Motif No.1 Day Festival. Other Motif paintings have included “SuperMoon and Motif” (2017), “Christmas Motif” (2018) and his most recent, “Mirror Motif” (2019). Why keep painting it? “What I intend to do is continue to discover meaning and beauty in something so familiar—and beloved—by so many. It will keep me growing as a human being who’s also an artist and observer of the world I live in and love. The truth is, if an artist can’t find inspiration on Cape Ann, even in the ordinary, then you won’t see it anywhere.”

Looking back over the last five years, Arsenault notes a number of  highlights: “Being juried into the Rockport Art Association the first year I applied…A visit from (and art sold to) Grammy-winning singer Sam Smith…Watching the Christmas Tree lighting and Declaration of Independence reading outside my gallery…Meeting and making friends with so many quality people. More than anything, the joy of knowing that an individual has come in to see my work, made a personal connection to something I created, and is willing to invest their money—whether twenty dollars or ten thousand dollars—to bring it home is a feeling I can’t quite explain. It’s a blessing I hope to experience for the rest of my life.”

Her artistic talent was identified early in life when she was selected to attend art classes at the Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio. In 1969 Faulkner visited a solo exhibit of Matisse’s huge canvases at the Grand Palais in Paris, France. The experience left an indelible impression on Faulkner whose style is reminiscent of Duffy and Matisse. Her Art evokes a sense of elegance through her charming and colorful interpretations of the world’s most loved and traveled cities and villages. Also, a singer, her career as a singer is a strong influence on her art.
In 1996, Faulkner established her own artist-run gallery, the B.J. Faulkner Gallery in Lenox, Massachusetts in the Berkshires as a flagship location to showcase her work. That same year, Faulkner was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra to design the Tanglewood music festival poster. Faulkner’s illustrations have appeared on a range of products from note cards, to book covers for Prentice-Hall and others, as well as the United Airlines European destination poster. Her illustrations focus on travel, leisure, luxury, lifestyle, children, and theatrical projects. Influenced by travel, her paintings depict romantic townscapes, serene landscapes, and beautiful seaside motifs.

In 2007 Faulkner was honored to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for her artistic talent from her alma mater Maumee Valley Country Day School in Toledo, Ohio. She has participated in numerous shows and fundraising events throughout her career.

ANNOUNCES
“QUARRY DANCE VllI”  2019

At HALIBUT POINT STATE PARK around Babson Farm Quarry

Performances are:
Friday, July 26th at 5:30pm
Saturday, July 27th at 11:00am and 4:30pm new time!
Sunday, July 28th at 1:00pm.

image003.jpgWindhover Performing Arts Center has presented dynamic and exciting Quarry Dances at various quarries located throughout the Cape Ann area for the past seven years. This year, Windhover returns to the pristine site where the first quarry dance was performed 8 years ago. Situated in front of the ocean as the backdrop, Babson Farm Quarry was once an active granite quarry which was abandoned in 1929, thus opening the way to its life as a site of natural beauty.

As in previous years, the remarkable Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre will create a site-specific modern dance around the quarry that features ledges, cliffs and stunning views. As in previous years, Russ Gershon, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and leader of the bands Either/Orchestra and Lookie Lookie in the Boston area will accompany all four performances.

Performances of Quarry Dance Vlll are free and open to the public. No reservations are necessary, however all performances are weather dependent. If there is rain, that performance will be cancelled. The duration of each performance is approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.

Closing Talk for Eviction | Destruction | Renewal: An Exhibition About Resiliency

Three Artists: Susan Greer Emmerson, Tatiana Flis and Rebecca Skinner – Closing Talk: Sunday, July 28, 4:00-5:00 PM

Cultural Center at Rocky Neck
6 Wonson Street, Gloucester, MA

Gallery open: Thursday-Sunday, 12:00-6:00 PM

On Sunday, July 28, 2019, the public is invited to join artists Susan Greer Emmerson, Tatiana Flis, and Rebecca Skinner for an informal tour and Q+A session about their exhibition, Eviction | Destruction | Renewal: An Exhibition About Resiliency.. The artists will address major themes of the exhibition and offer details and anecdotes on how the show came together and their individual processes. Visitors are welcome to ask questions along the way.
Countless forms of destruction are seen throughout our world. Natural disasters tear up the landscape, pushing buildings into the sea and boats to the mountains. The economy fluctuates from financial security into debt and poverty. Addiction leads to neglect and loss, and eviction plagues most social classes. It is when the light shines through the devastation that humanity expresses its deepest secrets, needs, and resilience. The Rocky Neck Art Colony explores the notions of destruction, natural disasters, financial insecurity, addiction and eviction through the creative eyes of the three artists featured in Eviction | Destruction | Renewal: An Exhibition About Resiliency.
In this exhibition, artists Susan Greer Emmerson, Tatiana Flis, and Rebecca Skinner share their perspectives on darkness, loss, and renewal of the human condition. By combining photography, sculpture, drawing and mixed-media installations each artists takes their personal reflections and shares unique stories about the worlds we create. The imagery ranges across abandoned buildings, demolished homes, and stoic figures to create a dynamic visual experience.

The opening reception for Gloucester artist Ann Conneman’s work at the Jane Deering Gallery on Pleasant Street drew a crowd.

The exhibition Within | Without celebrates Conneman’s masterful brush-drawn, hand-carved lettering in stone and on paper. The stones are found throughout New England, many on walks in the wilds of Cape Ann. In the artist’s words: Lettering out these words with a brush and paint is a silent performance—a fluid, slow-motion translation into visual presence. Carving is elemental—the physical removal of stone with a mallet and chisel. Words become tactile and enduring.

The Rocky Neck Art Colony’s Goetemann Artist Resident, Eeva Siivonen, Gives Opening Talk on Monday, July 1

Opening Talk:

7:00 PM on Monday, July 1 at the Cultural Center
at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester, MA.

Closing Talk:

7:00 PM on Thursday, July 25,
at the Goetemann Residency Studio, 77 Rocky Neck Ave., #10.

Now in its 15th year, the Rocky Neck Art Colony’s Goetemann Artist Residency provides visiting artists with a four-week stay in a live-work studio at the Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC) with access to the rich cultural community of Gloucester, MA. The July artist, video artist Eeva Siivonen, will give her opening talk at 7:00 PM on Monday, July 1, at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester, MA. Her closing talk is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Thursday, July 25, at the Goetemann Residency Studio, 77 Rocky Neck Ave., #10.

In Siivonen’s moving image work, the physical and sensorial experience of being in a place or a landscape creates subjective voices that are transient and present only through the dialogue between senses and the details of the physical environment. She assumes bodies and identities of observers who wander, rethink, and reinvent themselves constantly through the dialogue between language, image and sound. She looks for the moments of connection when images, words and sounds meet and align—creating, however briefly, a unity of a voice or experience. By playing with the constant tension between the pre-linguistic and ambiguous nature of images and sounds, and the gravity of language defines and creates meanings. Prefering to embrace chaos and the fragile nature of our subjectivities, the constant stream of memories, random thoughts, and associations that collide with the perceptual world around us, keep her viewers in a perpetual state of aimless change and movement.

This illuminates what is small and ephemeral—details, thoughts, and emotions that appear and disappear like fireflies at dusk. Little pieces and traces of thought and experience speak through silence rather than noise. She sutures these together in a visual and sonic space where the overlooked and forgotten become visible and amplified in an effort to create space for attention and empathy.

A video artist, originally from Helsinki, Finland, Eeva Siivonen currently lives in London, Ontario. She earned her BFA and MFA degrees in documentary film directing from Aalto University in Helsinki before moving to the US as a Fulbright Scholar to pursue a second MFA in Video Art from Syracuse University.
