Saturday, November 9, 3:00-4:00 PM

Free and open to the public

The Rocky Neck Art Colony is pleased to celebrate 41 artists selected for inclusion in the highly anticipated exhibition, PAPERWORKS: Art As Evidence. This juried exhibition at the Cultural Center, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester MA, runs for six weeks beginning Thursday, October 17 and continuing through Sunday, November  24, 2019.  The pubic is invited to enjoy the art and conversation at the opening reception on Saturday, October 19 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM with light refreshements and beverages served. Street parking is free and the facility is handicapped accessible.

Jurors Anne Marie Crotty and Cynthia Switzer Roth chose 59 pieces for the exhibition from more than 230 works submitted for consideration by 71 New England artists. Despite being open to New England artists, those chosen for the PAPERWORKS exhibition are all from Massachusetts with many from the Boston area and greater Cape Ann—with 12 from Gloucester and Rockport including Joy Buell, Janice Charles, Pat Lowery Collins, Barbe Ennis, Dina Gomery, Ann Lafferty, Rebecca Nagle, Christy Park, Mary Rhinelander, Lynne Sausele, Ruth Schneider, and Jan Weinshanker.

The pieces for PAPERWORKS: Art As Evidence were chosen to not only their quality and content but as the ‘evidence’ of the many creative uses of paper they display. Viewers will enjoy myriad paintings, pastels, encaustics, mixed-media, photographs, constructions, collages, prints, papier maché and more in 2D and 3D works of art, all employing paper in their creation. The exhibition occupies two galleries at the Cultural Center.

Artist Talk
You won’t want to miss the opportunity to hear from a number of artists about their process of art making in a casual afternoon talk at the Cultural Center on Saturday, November 9, 3:00-4:00 PM. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the artists and ask questions about their work. Light refreshments will be available.

About the Jurors
Jurors Anne Marie Crotty and Cynthia Switzer Roth met in 1990 as founding members of Gloucester’s cooperative gallery, Local Colors, and later, in 2008, opened the Flatrocks Gallery in Lanesville. The Crotty-Roth curatorial partnership created over 100 exhibits in ten years there, introducing young artists to the public and providing recognition for established talents.

Solo Show: John Fleming
Saturday – October 12, 2019

Opening Reception:
Saturday, October 12, 2:00 – 4:00 PM

An exhibition of sculpture and drawings by Rockport artist John Fleming will open in the Marguerite Pearson Room of the Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M) on Saturday, October 12th with an artist’s reception from 2 – 4 PM. The exhibition will be on view Saturday, October 12 – Thursday, October 24.

As a member of the Rockport Art Association & Museum, Fleming has won numerous awards for excellence in sculpture and graphics, including the Marguerite Pearson Gold Medal for best in show.  A graduate of the Pratt Institute in New York City, Mr. Fleming’s art has taken many forms: commercial art, advertising, graphic design, illustration, art direction, and jewelry design and manufacturing.   The works he will be featuring in this solo show are drawn from Fleming’s decision to use nature’s seemingly random way of creation and “see what happens.”  As Fleming himself states:

“Each piece has its story.  Some hopeful of what they will become.  Some comical.  One, in particular, tragic and flawed knowing that it’s probably the last of its evolving kind.  All of them having no sense of why they exist.”

Jane Deering Gallery presents First Violin: An Octave of Prints by artist Patty Rosenblatt.

An Opening Reception will be held with the artist on Saturday, October 12th from 4:00-6:00pm. The series of eight images grew out of a commission from the Longwood Symphony Orchestra to make a sculptural piece using an unfinished violin. Inspired by a relished theory — which posits that clay is the substance from which all life on earth first sprang — Rosenblatt decided to submerge the violin in a well of wet clay and allow the complexity of time to alter the submerged instrument. The resulting series of prints capture the various stages of transformation. The gallery is located at 19 Pleasant Street, Gloucester MA, next to the Cape Ann Museum. Gallery hours: Friday/Saturday/Sunday from 1:00-5:00pm and by appointment at pattyrosenblatt@gmail.com.

Patty Rosenblatt studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. She earned a BA from Goucher College and and MA from Boston College. In 2007 she was awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation Scholarship by the Santa Fe Art Institute. Currently, she is an Advisor to Manship Artists Residency and Studios (MARS), Gloucester MA; and served from 1999-2013 on the Advisory Board of the Aidekman Art Gallery, Tufts University. Rosenblatt has exhibited widely throughout the northeast region. Her work is in numerous public and private collections. The artist maintains a studio on Cape Ann.

This Weekend in the Arts 10/6-9/2019

SATURDAY, October 5 – Artist’s Reception at GLADSTONE

unknown
Cove Glow, 2018, oil on canvas, 9” x 12 – Rockport, MA
GLADSTONE fine jewelry and fine art gallery is pleased to be showcasing the work of Zufar Bikbov, an acclaimed plein air painter, in conjunction with the upcoming Cape Ann Plein Air Competition and Festival in October. The exhibition opened on August 20 and will be on view through October 12.

A RECEPTION FOR THE ARTIST WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER  5, 4-6 pm. All are welcome!

Zufar Bikbov is passionate about oil painting and the dynamic nature of the plein air art form. He has been traveling and painting landscapes throughout the United States for over a decade, and is the recipient of multiple prestigious plein air awards at national competitions of juried artists.
A native of Russia, Zufar was influenced by his father’s unrealized dream to become a professional artist in Stalin era post WWII Soviet Union. Zufar trained from the age of nine at Zelenodolsk Youth Art School in Kazan in the Russian realist tradition. He embraces experimentation in his artwork and today his landscape painting style exhibits elements of both realism and impressionism.
As a young adult, Bikbov’s desire to help others led him to embark on a career in medicine. During his years in medical school and residency, art remained an important constant in his life. He was honored to participate in the 2002 exhibit, Doctors Paint, at the State Museum of Fine Arts in Kazan, Russia.  There he made a connection which ultimately brought him to Yale to further his medical studies. He relocated to the United States in 2004 and continued to work in the medical field through 2016, painting and participating in plein air competitions all the while. Zufar became a full-time artist and art teacher in 2017.
Zufar’s work is represented in private collections throughout the United States – from New England to California – as well as the UK, Spain, and of course, Russia. While he continues to avidly explore the American landscape, Zufar teaches painting in studio and online at the www.confidentartist.com project. www.zufar.com
This is Zufar’s first exhibition at GLADSTONE and the second year he will be competing in Cape Ann Plein Air, October 6 – 14. www.capeannpleinair.com. He was the recipient of the Second Place Award at Cape Ann Plein Air 2018.
The gallery is located at 36 ½ Union Street. Hours are 11-6, Tuesday – Saturday. www.gladstonejewelry.com

An exhibition of representational landscape paintings in the medium of pastel by Ipswich artist Andrew Andersson-Bell will open in the Marguerite Pearson Room of the Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M) on Saturday, September 28th with an artist’s reception from 2 – 4 PM. The exhibition will be on view Saturday, September 28 – Thursday, October 10.

Native to the New England area, Andrew Anderson-Bell is a representational landscape artist painting in the medium of pastel. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Andrew initially pursued graphic design and photography. While these remain passions to this day, his interest in painting in pastel was sparked by viewing a pastel exhibition he saw 20 years ago. The immediacy of the medium, the vibrancy of the colors and the diversity of mark making inspired him to pursue a career in pastel painting. Where Andrew lives keeps him in daily contact with the great outdoors, his leading source for artistic inspiration. His paintings offer the viewer the indulgence of a meditative space to contemplate the grandeur of nature and reinforce the notion that even the most solitary and tranquil moments have significance.

Canadian sculpture and video artist, Matthew Trueman, was chosen as the Rocky Neck Art Colony’s 2019 Goetemann Environmental/Installation Artist.  Truman is currently building on a series called Instruments for Landscapes that utilizes musical and clockwork technology powered by found sources of energy to create autonomous instruments tuned to specific landscapes.  He plans to create a similar piece for his Goetemann Residency project at Ocean Alliance, 32 Horton Street, in Rocky Neck.

Truemann will give an opening talk at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 3 at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester. He will show and talk about his completed project at 6:00 PM on Thursday, September 26 at Ocean Alliance. The public is also invited to watch Truemann at work anytime by walking up Horton Street to Ocean Alliance anytime from September 4 to 22.

Instrument for Inquiry installation by Matthew Trueman

A central theme of Truemann’s work is an exploration of space using our ears, as opposed to our eyes, as the primary source of information. This shift of sense is especially relevant for understanding marine animals that rely far more on acoustics that humans.

The Instruments for the Landscapes series aims to allow us to listen closer by making sound. To do this the sculpture, and ultimately the listener, must absorb, respond and harmonize with the elemental and ecological sounds of the coastline.

The sculpture powers itself using energy from the wind, water or the sun to create an output that works like a telescope, allowing listeners access into the depth of the soundscape around them.

About Matthew Truemann

A Canadian sculpture and video artist who completed his MFA at Western University in 2018, Truemann is a resident of London, Ontario. He employed his woodworking background to found an environmentally responsible furniture business called Joined Habitat.  See http://www.matthewtrueman.com/#/instrument-for-inquiry-into-the-melody-of-the-landscape/ to see and hear examples of Truemann’s prior constructions. Matthew Truemann’s residency is sponsored by Karen Ristuben.

The Goetemann Artist Residency of the Rocky Neck Art Colony and the Cape Ann Museum are collaborating to present “A Conversation with Joan Snyder and Molly Snyder-Fink” at the Cape Ann Museum, 27 Pleasant Street, Gloucester on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at 2:00 PM.  Joan Snyder and her daughter Molly Snyder-Fink will be in conversation about her work and accompanied by images. The event is free and open to the public with a reception following the talk. Registration for seating is suggested on line at camuseum.eventbrite.com or by calling 978 283-0455 ext.10.

This special program inaugurated in 2008 invites a nationally known artist to speak at the Cape Ann Museum followed by a four-day workshop.  This year the workshop is being held at the Montserrat College of Art studios.

Joan Snyder is a national treasure.  She has without question stood her creative, inventive, personal ground with the great painters of the last 50 years.  Her work is very much about her lived experience and being accessible to the viewer. Snyder, well known to the art world, has been honored as a Guggenheim Fellow, National Endowment for the Arts Fellow and MacArthur Fellow. Her work is currently on view in an exhibition “Epic Abstraction” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.  Snyder first gained public attention in the early 1970s with her gestural and elegant “stroke paintings,” which used the grid to deconstruct and retell the story of abstract painting. By the late seventies, Snyder had abandoned the formality of the grid. She began more explicitly incorporating symbols and text, as the paintings took on a more complex materiality. These early works were included in the 1973 and 1981 Whitney Biennials and the 1975 Corcoran Biennial.

“The functions of Ms. Snyder’s art, first and foremost, are to further the tradition of painting and to explore the most serious aspects of the human condition; to connect us not only to one another and to nature but to ancient rites and myths. She reminds us that no matter how modern and civilized we are, art can still be raw, primitive and talismanic. Without apologies or decorum, Ms. Snyder’s work awakens all of the things still wild within us.”Lance Esplund. “Lady of the Wild Things”. The Wall Street Journal, April 27,2011, p. d6

Quarry Dance Vlll Recap and More Dance

image001
Photo: David Watts Jr.

Halibut Point Quarry was transformed in late July by the Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre who bedazzled the landscape in saffron and mustard yellow costumes and took center stage for a moment in time. Perched like birds on the quarry cliffs, first hovering, then gliding and cascading, the dancers interfaced with the seagulls in brilliant choreographic tandem! Windhover Performing Arts Center has produced eight quarry dances so far, and each one is unique and site-specific, utilizing the characteristics of each particular quarry landscape. All of us who were present at a performance witnessed the art of dance and music enlivened by nature… a perfect trio!

Those who missed it this year, stay tuned for more live dance happenings this summer when Windhover Performing Arts Center hosts the Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company starting Wednesday, September 4–Saturday, September 7, 2019. The week explodes with three Master Classes in modern dance for all ages and levels, two open rehearsals, plus two evening dance performances of Paul Taylor’s works.
