Jennifer McCalmont Solo Show at RAA&M

Jennifer McCalmont is a recognized Cape Ann artist with a solo show of stunning floral and landscape paintings at the Rockport Art Association & Museum in the Marguerite Pearson Gallery. McCalmont is in love with color and captivated by the way light and color play on objects, especially flowers, which are her favorite subject.  Her work is about capturing the grace or fragrance of flowers and sharing their beauty through painting.

In her quest for art training, McCalmont discovered “The Boston School” of painters, which is not actually a school, but a school of thought and a tradition of painting that has been passed down from teacher to student for more than 100 years. The Boston School has its roots in impressionist ideals, but combines the best of representational painting, seeing color correctly and drawing accurately. McCalmont has learned from many of the Boston school “greats”, most recently spending many years studying portrait painting with Mary Minifie.

Come and experience McCalmont’s beautiful and memorable floral and landscapes paintings in person September 12 – October 1, 2020. Concurrently her exhibit will also be available online at: https://www.rockportartassn.org/solo-shows where his works can be enjoyed and purchased.

The Rockport Art Association & Museum is located at 12 Main Street, Rockport MA 01966, and is free and open to the public Thursday – Sunday, 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM. For more information please call: (978) 546-6604, email: infor@rockportartassn.org, or visit the Rockport Art Association & Museum website at:www.rockportartassn.org.

Kristine Fisher. Awry | Just Breathe, inspired by these historic times, presents two different interpretations in response to the noise” of the current Covid19 pandemic. Awry — Nothing seems quite right in the world, everything is a bit off kilter. All pieces are intentionally misaligned and act as a metaphor for the angst and discord in todays world. Just Breathe — As an antidote to the disarray, these works reflect the way in which Cape Anns transporting beauty, discovered along daily beach walks and explorations, provides comfort, healing, and renewal.  Jane Deering Gallery is located at 19 Pleasant Street, Gloucester MA. Gallery hours: Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 1-3pm, September 25 through October 12, and by appointment. Please contact Donna Caselden at dcaselden@gmail.com.

The Goetemann Artist Residency program, part of Rocky Neck Art Colony, is proud to announce two talks featuring this year’s Environmental Installation Artist Sophy Tuttle.

The Meet the Artist Talk, on September 9 at 4 PM will be via Zoom, and introduces Tuttle’s work and plans for her project at Ocean Alliance.

The Project Unveiling Talk will take place at Ocean Alliance (32 Horton Street on Rocky Neck in Gloucester) at 4PM September 29, accommodating visitors wearing masks and socially distancing as necessary—also available via Zoom. Both talks will be recorded.

Information on the Zoom access will be posted on the Rocky Neck Art Colony website (https://rockyneckartcolony.org/residency/) and the Goetemann Artist Residency blog (https://garesidency.art/).

About the Artist:

Sophy Tuttle is a visual artist born in Colchester, England. She received her BFA in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design in 2008 and MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from the University of Hartford Art School in 2019. She currently resides in Massachusetts.

From Sophy Tuttle’s Artist Statement:

“My paintings and installations examine humanity’s collective priorities for the planet. I draw upon disparate inspirations such as the aesthetic and methodology of the natural sciences or the compositional strategies of the Mexican muralismo movement.

“I always begin with a certain genre of questioning. For example, we have relied on the idea of Aristotle’s hierarchy of species to place ourselves above all others in every decision we make. What would it look like if we inverted this hierarchy? In this vein, each piece that I produce is a catalyst for conversation, collaboration and activism.”

About the Goetemann Artist Residency:

Celebrating its 16th year in 2020, this prestigious residency at Rocky Neck Art Colony provides each of four visual artists and one environmental installation artist with a four-week stay in a live-work studio with access to the rich cultural community of Gloucester, MA. The program was renamed to honor its founder, Gordon Goetemann, in 2010. Find out more about the program at https://rockyneckartcolony.org/residency/.

Quarry Dance lX Trailer is here and it’s 60 seconds

ANNOUNCING THE 60 SECOND TRAILER FOR QUARRY DANCE lX NOW

image002
Photography by David Watts Jr. at a Cape Ann Quarry July 2020        Dancer: Alex Berger

Windhover Performing Arts Center announces this 60 second trailer for Quarry Dance lX for you to view here below. The 30-minute film is still being edited, and original music is being composed for the film now by Russ Gershon.

In July 2020, Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre was in residence (safely) at Windhover, bringing two dancers at a time from New York to create solos and duets at three private Cape Ann Quarries. Boston based videographer Anders Johnson filmed the dancers from floats and boats in the quarry waters in order to capture unusual angles. The stunning results will be shown on the Windhover website via You Tube in early September. www.Windhover.org   So stay tuned.

The Quarry Dances were born from a vision of Ina Hahn, Windhover’s founding Director, whose goal was to marry the art of dance with the pristine granite landscapes of the magical quarries of Cape Ann.

In the Moment, Five artists capture and create

The Rocky Neck Art Colony presents a new online exhibition, In the Moment, featuring five esteemed New England photographers: Olivia Parker, Tsar Fedorsky, Rebecca Skinner, Paul Cary Goldberg and Dana Salvo. Each of these photographers ask the observer to look closely at just how long a moment can last. It might be a mother and child sharing a conversation in the street or a rock that teeters forever on the beach. Small wonders are revealed in buttons, the bright blue geometry of an industrial wall, and in paint holding the past in its peels—before it flakes away forever. In the Moment unites the viewer, the instant captured and the photographer’s eye.

Cape Ann Artisans August 15th Mini-Tour – Updated Schedule

August Collage.jpg

Based on the success of the July Mini-Tour, the Cape Ann Artisans look forward to a second one-day event on August 15th.   To beat the heat, the hours have been moved earlier.  Six of the studios will open at 8AM; Plum Cove Studios will open at 9AM and all will close at 4PM.

The participating artists include David Archibald, Cynthia Curtis, and Erin O’Sullivan & Scott Place (Twin Lights Studios) representing the ceramic arts.   They are joined by painter Jillian Demeri, sea glass jeweler Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco, glass artist Beth Williams, and Pamela Stratton Mosaics.   The group has self-selected based on their ability to use outdoor spaces and welcome visitors safely.

Once again, the Artisans will take full advantage of their outdoor spaces to offer “safe” visiting and shopping.  The feedback from July was extremely encouraging with all artisans enjoying art sales, new regional visitors, former patrons, and people strolling the neighborhood and responding to the signature pink signage.   A Salem visitor shared her experience enthusiastically.

Our visit to the mini-tour of the Cape Ann Artisans could not have been more delightful. Under the restrictions of the Covid protocols, the artists were welcoming, informative and glad to have visitors. Their welcome was gracious and their art was impressive. We did buy ceramic lamp bases from David Archibald, and are thrilled with our purchase. We are very much looking forward to the next tour. And of course, Cape Ann is a work of art in itself.

Visitors can easily group the tour into geographic proximity by visiting the Gloucester artists and Rockport artists in sequence by neighborhood from East Gloucester, to downtown, to Riverdale, Lanesville, and Rockport (or reverse). The full Cape Ann Artisan Tour map can be downloaded at CapeAnnArtisans.com.

Artists are all taking appointment by phone, email, and/or Square for visitors that would like to reserve a specific time.  Appointments will be given first priority if the studio is at Covid-compliant capacity.  Look for our pink flags to way-find to the open studios!

The Artisans have also confirmed the Fall Tour for Saturday and Sunday, October 10-11.   Details for the Fall Tour are forthcoming.    All the Cape Ann Artisans welcome appointments throughout the season and hope to hear directly from visitors.

Artisans ask for visitors to be Covid-Compliant, wear facial coverings, practice social distancing, and use hand sanitizer which will be available at each studio.

WINDHOVER’s 2020 SUMMER NEWS In the time of the pandemic; July 20, 2020

image001.png

Quarry Dance Nine Takes Center Stage:

image002

With our world, our lives and the performing arts as we knew them drastically altered for all of us in unprecedented ways, Windhover is moving forward with the creative impulse which uplifts us.  The arts in this time of crisis, gives us hope, elevates our spirits and helps transcend the difficulties facing us now.

With that idea in mind, we at Windhover have found a way to bring a new and original QUARRY DANCE NINE to all of those who want to experience the art of dance from the comfort of your own home! Here is what is happening:

Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre, the innovative NYC based company which has performed the Quarry Dances for the past eight years, is in residence at Windhover this month bringing two dancers at a time here. Dušan, the choreographer, is currently creating a new and original quarry dance specifically designed for film. Three stunning private quarries on Cape Ann, with the generosity of their respective owners, have been selected to be where the Quarry Dance Nine takes place.  Dušan is busy creating a new work at these three quarries this week. Each section of the dance at each of the three quarries will be filmed by Boston based videographer Anders Johnson, then edited into one dance.  The film will be streamed in mid-to-late August, complete with original music by jazz musician and multi-instrumentalist Russ Gershon.

This video version of the quarry dance lends a new and different perspective to this art form. As an audience member, you will be able to hover over the cliffs, immerse yourself in the quarry waters, and have that bird’s-eye view that the camera can provide.  Duets and solos on these quarry walls and waters are the building blocks of Quarry Dance Nine, as the dancers perform while being safely social distanced. It is a new and original work, and the excitement of performing outdoors is a gift to be shared with you, our audience.

During this time of crisis, the arts have been sadly affected, but my hope is to have Windhover provide a safe refuge for artists of all kinds to be able to create new and original work. Quarry Dance Nine is the first of these endeavors, and more will come. The film of Quarry Dance Nine will have a specific release date in August to be  announced soon.

If you are able to donate to Windhover Performing Arts Center to help support the dancers, musician and filmmaker of  Quarry Dance Nine, please go to the Windhover website here  www.windhover.org and use the DONATE button which links to Paypal. Or alternatively you can send a donation to Windhover, P.O Box 2249. Rockport, Ma. 01966.  Windhover is a 501©3 ORGANIZATION AND ALL DONATIONS ARE FULLY TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

Thank you for your support. It is greatly appreciated.

We also want to thank Harvard Pilgrim Health Care for their support of Quarry Dance Nine, as well as the Rockport and Gloucester Cultural Councils.
