The act of painting portraits – and self-portraits – is as old as art itself. Thus it is no surprise to find that over the course of the past century the artists of the Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M) have applied their superlative skills towards crafting portraits of themselves and each other.
The selection of portraits featured in this show are all drawn from the Rockport Art Association & Museum’s permanent museum collection. Executed in oil, watercolor, and photography, these works document the diverse forms or artistic expression employed over the last century by our artist members. As well, they stand as a priceless means by which we can experience and get to know some of the faces that have made the Rockport Art Association & Museum one of the premier centers for the fine arts in America.
Faces from the Past: 100 Years of RAA&M Artists in Portraiture is running from NOW until Thursday, September 16 in our Wengenroth Gallery. For more information please click here: https://www.rockportartassn.org/calendar-of-events/2021/8/27/faces-from-the-past

The six accomplished contemporary artists featured in 20/20 Vision share adventuresome approaches to materials, a commitment to experimental processes, and inspired engagement with Cape Ann’s extraordinary natural environment.
Risk-takers all, and passionate lovers of their process, Donna Caselden, Terry Del Percio-Piemonte, Richard Crangle, Kristine Fisher, Kat Masella and Susan Guest-McPhail all work to keep excitement and freshness alive. In this exhibition, they have left safety and the ordinary behind to reveal their clearest artistic expression. These artists ask, “Does 20/20 vision really exist for an artist or for anyone as life evolves?” Affirming that “artistic pursuits, as with life, can be murky and full of risk,” they conclude that “In our creative journey, the only clarity that we really have is to be truly present and lean into our hearts.” Showcasing painting, mixed media and sculpture, this exhibition celebrates each artist’s story of spirit, perseverance, and vision.
Boston-based artist Donna Caselden has been creating experimental artwork over the past several years. Originally an interior designer, Donna blends her painting skills with her design knowledge, resulting in a perfect marriage of her two passions.
From his studio in Gloucester, Massachusetts, Richard Crangle creates refined wood sculpture and furniture that incorporate time honored craftsmanship and contemporary expression using local, reclaimed, and exotic woods. Crangle’s vocabulary of abstract and organic themes, innovative shapes, and surface treatments evoke the inclusion of visual grace and movement. His work is in the
Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts and in many private collections.
Painter and mixed-media artist Terry Del Percio-Piemonte is showing work from two completely different series. Her current paintings arrange complex patterns and shapes suggesting aerial views of cityscapes that abstractly reflect how we construct our communities from both a physical and political standpoint. On her other series, Del Percio remarks, “The year 2020 seemed to bring the world’s insanity to a volcanic head, and it has had a tremendous impact on me personally.” Using fabric and threads for a new collage series called “Frayed Around the Edges” Del Percio appears to be documenting her emotional reactions to the very disturbing times in which we live.
Kristine Fisher is a contemporary visual artist specializing in mixed media and photography. Her work is largely influenced by the coastal environs of living on Cape Ann. The sea’s rhythms, along with her many years of working with global design leader Herman Miller, are reflected in the graphic simplicity of her work. Fisher has exhibited with numerous North Shore art associations and the Jane Deering Gallery, Gloucester, Massachusetts.
Kat Masella paints energetic contemporary oil paintings full of emotion. Her work evokes wonderment and joy through layers of rich imagery, colors and textures. Kat has exhibited nationally and internationally and has won numerous awards.
Susan Guest-McPhail is an award-winning artist, printmaker, and teacher who loves to create and share. Her work is intuitive, colorful, and changing.
In addition to an opening reception on Saturday, September 18, from 4 to 6 PM, the following public programs will accompany this exhibition:
September 22, 7-8 PM – Artist and teacher, Susan Guest-McPhail demonstrates mixed media techniques
October 2, 2-4 PM – Rick Crangle will conduct a drop-in demonstration of wood sculpting and hand carving skills
October 9, 2-4 PM – Kat Masella will demonstrate painting techniques and discuss her process

Gloucester, MA – The Rocky Neck Art Colony is proud to present Integral Beauty at the Cove Gallery (37 Rocky Neck Avenue), from September 2- 26, 2021. Integral Beauty is a collaboration of five artists, Rebecca Anne Nagle, Rē Siswick Graham, Loren Doucette, Rosemary Sullivan, and Celeste Huezo, who use their media to respond to the varying beauty found within nature, spirituality, and humanity. Cross sections of beauty that are seen through each artist’s own unique filter that culminate into a visceral experience for the viewer.
Rebecca Anne Nagle captures moments in time with sensitivity of mark, immersive color and empathy for the subject matter through undulation of reality and abstraction.
Rosemary Sullivan’s still lifes draw inspiration from local flowers and the landscape of Cape Ann and are celebrated by her colorful palette.
Loren Doucette extends her breadth as an artist and works in many styles pursuing a balance between abstraction and realism. The work ranges from local scenes of Gloucester to highly emotional abstract paintings.
Rē Siswick Graham explores the beautiful structure of nature within its molecular composition. Her abstraction is often expressed in a variety of media.
Celeste Huezo is a printmaker fascinated by color, heritage, and repetition. As a first generation daughter of immigrants, her art expresses her desire to find identity in Salvadoran and Latin American culture. Her main medium is screen printing on Saltillo tiles along with cut paper exploration.

“For this recent body of work I have deviated, to some extent, from the Horizon series that has represented the majority of my work for the past several years, not because that imagery has played out for me, but simply to broaden the scope of my subject matter. Yet my intent remains the same— to showcase the beauty and inspiration that nature provides. Central to this is the play of light across the landscape (and moonscape) — sometimes dramatically illuminating objects, sometimes mingling with the atmosphere, and sometimes there is magic in the shadows. In any instance however, like life, light is always transitional and represents constant change.”

July 20, 2021: After supporting residencies for artists throughout the pandemic and launching numerous initiatives allowing creatives to utilize the idyllic beauty of the Manship estate during a time of great societal strain, the Manship Residency is thrilled to safely welcome the community back onto our grounds with a series of ticketed weekend jazz concerts spanning the month of August. At Manship, we know firsthand how the pandemic amplified the difficulties that artists and musicians face. These concerts will not only serve to further Manship’s mission, allowing us to continue our efforts to support local artists. They will also directly provide thirteen exceptionally talented musicians an opportunity to perform before a live audience after a period of tremendous disruption in the gig economy.
The gorgeous grounds of the Paul Manship Estate, which is called Starfield and located in the village of Lanesville, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, will provide an arresting backdrop for the concert series. Complete with two quarries, knobbly knolls of granite, and aromatic pine trees, the preservation of this historic and natural treasure is an equally vital part of the work of the Manship Residency. Manship is thrilled to present such spontaneous and creative music on an estate where creativity has always been the norm. We thank the multi-talented Marla Blakey for her production work on these concerts. Without her, these performances would not be possible.
Tickets will be available at manshipartists.org beginning July 20th. The grounds will open at 7:00 PM on Saturday and 5:30 on Sundays; the shows will begin a half hour later. We recommend reserving your spot for your preferred concert as soon as possible, as tickets will be limited! Reservations are required. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
The series begins on August 7th, when jazz singer Shawnn Montiero will perform a tribute to the legendary vocalist Carmen McRae. Montiero is known for her ethereal vocals and improvisatory phrasing, she possesses a Ray Charles-like ability to suddenly kick a tune into a higher gear and bring a crowd to life. Her energetic stage presence will provide the perfect spark needed for this opening performance, which is also billed as a special event for Manship donors and will serve as the Manship Residency’s 2021 Gala.
On the 14th and 15th, the famed Martha’s Vineyard jazz duo of John Alaimo and Michael Tinus will take the stage. Alaimo possesses local roots, having studied at Boston University and Berklee College of Music, top-class musicianship, and the ability to make keys sparkle and resonate, especially when paired with the ever-present rumble of Tinus’ bass.
The following weekend, on August 21st and 22nd, Manship is thrilled to welcome singer, actress, and storyteller April Armstrong as she pays tribute to one of the greatest musical artists ever – Billie Holiday. Armstrong has previously performed as Lady Day at the Vineyard Playhouse and other venues throughout the Northeast. For these shows, she is joined by pianist Matt Jensen and bassist Jesse Crawford, a veteran of the stage at Carnegie Hall.
Finally, the series concludes on August 28th and 29th with the Afro-Cuban jazz stylings of Stan Strickland. Greta Bro, a singer who has spent decades exploring the spiritual capabilities of the human voice, will provide vocal accompaniment. Strickland teaches at Berklee College of Music, and has shared the stage throughout his illustrious career with legends of the upper echelon like Pharaoh Sanders and Herbie Mann.
The Manship Residency hopes that you will join us to experience such beautiful and powerful music on the stunning grounds of the Manship estate. It is truly a pleasure to welcome our community back to Starfield, which is, at its core, a place where communal and social values flourish and proliferate through continued investment into artists and the changemakers in our society. We thank you for your support and consideration of our aims. Let the music begin!
About the Manship Residency
The site of the Manship Residency was once the summer retreat of Paul Manship, the sculptor of the Prometheus Fountain at Rockefeller Center. Today many of the same opportunities and qualities that attracted Paul Manship to Cape Ann are available to those who come here seeking an escape into a restorative natural setting to spark their inner muse. The core mission of the Manship Residency is supporting today’s innovators and thinkers and offering them an inspiring environment in which to create.

Brenda Malloy is pleased to announce that IMAGINE Gallery is celebrating it’s 20th season in the historic Rocky Neck Art Colony. Brenda’s latest work, ‘Torn’ series, will be showcased. Included are multidimensional collage paintings, sculpture, lamp shades and mobiles. The Gallery also features Malloy’s other artistic creations, including abstract paintings, hand painted clothing, hats, scarves and handbags, as well as greeting cards, magnets and lawn decor.
ABOUT IMAGINE GALLERY: IMAGINE opened in 2002 as a shop of imported handicrafts from Malloy’s winter travels to Nepal, Thailand, Bali, India, Tibet and China. In 2006 she started painting herself, and this is the second year that the Gallery features solely work done by Brenda herself. She is a prolific creator whose colorful work reflects her joy and love of life. Her goal was to make her creations accessible, with cards and magnets available for under $10, many small paintings, and various works up to 4′ x 5′ paintings.
IMAGINE is located on pilings in Smith’s Cove in an 1890 era former tar shack, where the pitch for the sealing of the ship sails created in the adjacent building was stored. It has housed numerous artists and galleries in recent decades.
ABOUT BRENDA MALLOY: Brenda is a self taught artist who first started painting in 2006. Her work has been influenced by the temples and monasteries, artwork and textiles of the Asian countries she has spent over 60 months visiting during her winter sojourns. She expresses herself in colorful, often highly textural, abstract, expressive creations on canvas, paper, driftwood, textiles and more. Her work reflects her positivity and optimistic outlook on life.
IMAGINE Gallery is open May – October daily 8am-8pm,43 Rocky Neck Ave, Gloucester, MA

Our pets and nature got us through the last year. Now, the Rocky Neck Art Colony wants to honor feathered, finned and furred friends with a special exhibition titled Wild Things: Animals Real and Imagined, opening August 5 at The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck.
Sixty works are on display including more than 14 sculptures, nine photographs, a selection of digital art as well as paintings, drawings and prints. Artists are from Oregon, Colorado, Louisiana and New England.
Juror Barbara Moody says that making a selection from almost 200 entries was quite the challenge: “I chose the most intriguing works that fit the theme of Wild Things: Known and Imagined,” says Moody. “Ultimately, I was forced to omit most of the domestic animals, birds and scenic environments even though they could be considered ‘wild.’ I was attracted most by those works that were unusual, curious, provocative and/or unique. “
About the Juror, Barbara Moody
Barbara Moody recently retired as a Professor of painting and drawing at Montserrat College of Art, where she also served as VP/Academic Dean for nine years. Her large-scale drawings have been shown at the Kingston Gallery in Boston, where she has had 14 solo shows. Barbara earned master’s and doctorate degrees from Harvard University, as well as a BFA from Syracuse University.
Moody serves on the Board of Rocky Neck Art Colony. She co-founded FLOAT Gallery, and will show her newest small works at the Cove Gallery on Rocky Neck in August.

Valetango Company performs Trust Me. Trust Me Not outdoors at Windhover Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday July 11 and Tuesday July 13th at 7:30pm. Valetango, led by award-winning choreographer Valeria Solomonoff, redefines Argentine Tango, stripping the form to its bare bones and committing to a dance-theater aesthetic that tells non-traditional stories and explores relationships of collaboration and power.
Co-presented by Windhover and the Gloucester Stage Company as part of GSC’s Neverdark series, Trust Me. Trust Me Not explores the importance and fragility of trust and the longing for profound togetherness. The show is directed by Orlando Pabotoy, Obie Award winning theater director; choreographed by Orlando Reyes Ibarra, 2019 ATUSA tango champion; Rodney Hamilton, former principal dancer with Ballet Hispanico, and Valeria Solomonoff, dancer and ACE and HOLA award winning choreographer. It will be performed by Rodney Hamilton, Valeria Solomonoff and Fabio Angelo.
Trust me. Trust me Not was developed in part through an artist residency at Windhover last summer. Each year, Windhover hosts 7-10 dance companies from greater New England and New York, providing choreographers a space to create, develop and rehearse new dance works. “We love it when artists return to Windhover to present a full performance of work they developed here,” says Windhover Artistic Director Lisa Hahn. “It shows the full scope of what we do at Windhover, and the way we support dance, from creation through opening night.” Trust Me. Trust Me Not began as a research project through a Fellowship at the Center for Ballet and The Arts, NYU and was developed through residencies at “Aire” Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana and “Danspace” at Judson Church as well as Windhover.
Tickets are $34 and can be purchased at www.windhover.org and through the Gloucester Stage Neverdark site at https://gloucesterstage.com/neverdark/. Trust Me. Trust Me Not is presented under and open-air tent and will happen rain or shine. For more information about Covid safety protocols, please visit https://gloucesterstage.com/keeping-you-safe/
About Windhover
For more than 50 years. Windhover has served the community as a place to learn, perform, and share the beauty of dance and the related arts in a natural setting.
In 1967, Herbert and Ina Hahn purchased the last farm in Pigeon Cove, a small village by the sea some two miles north of the town of Rockport, Massachusetts. The farm, on 4.5 acres of land, included a main house, cow barn, stables, slaughter house, various outbuildings and pasture land.
In less than a year Herb Hahn single-handedly converted the barn into a dance studio, the stable into a library, sheds and out-buildings into dormitories and he renovated the main house to function as a dining-kitchen complex. The performing arts camp for teenage girls opened in the summer of 1968 and during its seventeen years was filled to capacity with students from the USA, Canada and Mexico. During that period new buildings were added including a chapel/theater, a second dance studio, an outdoor stage for dance and theater performances, and a dining hall and kitchen in the main barn.
Windhover turned into a 501©3 non-profit organization in 1983 that offers dance classes, a teen dance intensive, residencies and performances in all of the performing arts to the Cape Ann Community and beyond.
