Norm Graham of Gloucester, who designed this loon out of bass wood, is one of about 100 vendors taking part in the March 20 Spring Fling Fair at O’Maley Middle School to raise money for a wheelchair van for Cherylann Parker.
Gloucester —
Celebrate the arrival of spring on Saturday, March 20 by coming to the Spring Fling Fair, hosted by the O’Maley Middle School in Gloucester, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In part, the fair will raise money to equip and modify a wheelchair van for Cherylann Parker, a longtime Gloucester educator who was injured in a horseback riding incident last fall.
The fair is geared toward families, with fun for all ages.
The Easter Bunny will drop by for photos and kids can also participate in “hands-on” art tables including sand designing, making sea shell magnets, and planting seedlings. The interactive arts tables are sponsored by the Gloucester PTO’s. Face painting will be available from 1 to 4 p.m. and over 100 vendors from across Cape Ann and the North Shore will sell their arts and crafts.

Essex Shipbuilding Museum to hold a Volunteers’ Day —TODAY!
From the Beacon–
On Saturday, March 13, from 9 a.m. to noon the Essex Shipbuilding Museum will hold a Volunteers’ Day. All are welcome.
The success of the Essex Shipbuilding Museum is due in large part to its energetic and motivated volunteers who devote countless hours to the museum. While there are many active volunteers, there is always a need for more. To recruit new volunteers, the museum is holding a Volunteer’s Day with two purposes in mind:
1. To provide an opportunity for interested individuals to learn more about the museum and the many interesting and fulfilling opportunities for volunteers, and
2. To provide an opportunity for existing volunteers to get a broader picture of what goes on in the museum as a whole and what some other opportunities are.
The museum has opportunities for seasoned professionals and raw newcomers to have a good time, meet interesting people, and have the satisfaction of doing something that will make a lasting difference.
The event is open to both members and non-members.
The day begins with an overview of the museum, followed by short presentations on each of the areas in which there are needs. Then there will be breakout sessions to learn more about specific areas. Time commitments and scheduled times vary with the area, and these will be covered in the individual presentations.
Some of the positions that the museum currently has needs for include: Educators, Tour Guides, Program Committee, Fleet and Facilities Projects and Maintenance, Lewis H. Story, Gardening, and Admissions Receptionist/Store Clerks

Working on the Desk
We did some research on the desk that I bought a couple of weeks ago. It is a Governor Winthrop as many of you identified and was probably built in the 1920’s. Because it is not in its original state, it has lost its value other than as a nice piece of furniture.
So we began sanding the part that had filler, but found that the wood grain in that area is vertical instead of horizontal like the rest of the surface. I’m not sure how to recreate the grain so that the wood will be somewhat uniform for staining.
Any ideas? Thanks! —–Sharon
