Did You Know? (Good Morning Gloucester Gallery is Awesome)

If you’re a visiting lover of Gloucester and Good Morning Gloucester and will soon be heading home, or even if you live here and aren’t going anywhere, get yourself something to remind you of the place and the blog you love so much.  The Good Morning Gloucester Gallery at 77 Rocky Neck on Madfish Wharf carries a great selection of framed photos and gallery wrap canvas photo prints by Joey C., paintings and sketches by Paul “ART ROCKS” Frontiero, ceramic pottery bowls by Paul Morrison (bet you didn’t know Paul Morrison did pottery, did you? And he’s good, although I think R. Duck helped), framed photos, cards and matted photos by Sharon Lowe, paintings, photos, cards, prints, treasure boxes, refrigerator art, Did You Know? book and 2012 Gloucester’s Finest Kind Calendar by E.J.  For the early shoppers, there are many great, affordable and unique holiday gift ideas, all focusing on this place we love.  Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery at 77 Rocky Neck, G3 on Madfish Wharf is open Wednesday through Saturday noon to 8:00pm (except this Saturday will be closing early to go to the Block Party and see the Joey C. show at Latitude 43), 10:00am to 6:00pm on Mug Up Sundays, but will soon be closing for the season, so come on by before it’s too late.  Parking is also much easier now.

Did You Know? (Irene Wisnewski)

That artist, Irene Wisnewski first came to Rocky Neck in the summer of 1974 from Syosset, Long Island, NY and returned to a gallery space on Rocky Neck every summer for almost 30 years?  She occupied the gallery at 77 Rocky Neck, G3 (now Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery) until 1999; left for a few years and then returned again to G3 for a couple of years after Carol St. John left.  She originally was primarily an oil painter, painting Goose Pond water lilies and scenes, and then each winter would learn a new medium – mastering handmade paper, collagraph prints, acrylic and collage painting.  She spent her winters in FL traveling from Palm Beach to Key West doing the outdoor art show circuit.  Irene, now 81, lives in Tubac, AZ, still paints in acrylic; however currently does more abstract painting and collage.  This was Irene’s first return trip to Gloucester since 2004.  It was really great to meet her and get to know an artist who was part of the history of Rocky Neck, particularly one who spent so much time in the space so many of us have really enjoyed this summer.

Did You Know? (It’s Saturday, So Tomorrow is MUG UP!)

It’s Saturday, and that means tomorrow is Mug Up at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck G3, Madfish Wharf.  10:00 am.  Always a great time, great people, great food, coffee and conversation.

Also, mark your calendars now for the last two upcoming competitions at the Gallery.  On Sunday, September 18th during Mug Up, we will be holding the First Annual Lobster Roll Competition.  Judges for this competition will be Sista Felicia (we all know what an awesome cook and foodie Felicia is), Wendie Demuth (who grew up working for her father’s lobster business and ate huge amounts of lobster, prepared in every imaginable way), Brenda Hill (food judge for the International Food, Wine & Travel Writers Association, author and freelance writer from FL, originally from Gloucester) and Kim Smith (butterfly garden and lobster roll expert, who’d better show or Ed Collard gets her spot).  The lobster roll competition will be fierce and require special handling, so we need to have an idea of the number of entrants in advance.  Bun grilling can be done here at the gallery just before the entry goes to the judges, so entrants only need to bring a batch of their filling (hopefully enough to share a little with everyone after judging is complete) and their buns of preference.  If you are planning to enter, please reply post on the blog, or if you want to be more secretive, you can email me at khanstudio@comcast.net.  You might also want to put in a reservation early with Joey at Capt. Joe & Sons for your lobsters.

On Sunday, October 2nd during the season’s Grand Finale Mug Up, we will be holding the First Annual Bloody Mary Competition.  Judges for this competition will be Maureen Malloy (Brenda’s aunt who comes highly recommended by Ed Collard), Charity Ciaramitaro (2nd cousin twice removed of Joey, great FOB and regular Mug Upper who loves Bloody Mary’s), Wendie “It must be 5:00pm somewhere” Demuth and our fun and Bloody Mary loving Mayor, Carolyn Kirk.  Start working on those special Bloody Mary recipes and bring a batch over for the competition.  You should plan to make up a big batch for judging/sharing and separate garnishes/glass, if you want to put in an entry that includes presentation (an important element of a winning Bloody Mary).

Do You Know? (Reach for the Stars)

Wayward Ziggy mysteriously finds his way back to the flower box at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, this time clothed and with a photo of a teenage boy.  I have identified who the boy in the picture is.  Do you know who it is?  Clue:  He is fast becoming one of the hottest young artists on Rocky Neck and was recently interviewed by Joey.

On the Ship to Shore Radio

Thacher Island Light
Painting by E.J.

Cute – submitted by Sylvia DeBoever (you remember, Sarah Lawrence’s niece from “The Mail Must Go Through”)

On the ship to shore radio:

SHIP: “Please divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision.”

SHORE: “Recommend that you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.”

SHIP: “This is the Captain of a U.S. Navy ship. I say again divert YOUR course.”

SHORE: “No, I say again you divert YOUR course.”

SHIP: “This is the aircraft carrier Enterprise, we are a large warship of the U.S. Navy. Divert your course NOW!”

SHORE: “This is a lighthouse. Your call.”

Did You Know? (Bloody Mary & Lobster Roll Competitions)

Another fun Mug Up was had by all.  An extra special treat showed up when Sista Felicia arrived with her amazing Caramelized Onion and Pear Flatbread Pizzas.  Can you guess whose hand that is reaching into the photo to snag the first slice?  Ed Sawicki from Mansfield, CT has been coming to Gloucester in the summer for 15 years and has been a FOB since the beginning.  He stopped into the Gallery recently to pick up a sticker and a Did You Know? book, and talk about the blog and photography and Photoshop, and then came back for Mug Up.  Irene Wisnewski, previous artist occupant of 77 Rocky Neck, G3 (now Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery) from 1979 to 1999 stopped in to join us.  More about Irene in another post.  We had a special visit from Joey’s own The Bean and Snoop Maddie Mad, who came by to represent and check out Chris Murray’s cool 3d photography with Aunt Felicia.  FOB, Leslie (Young) DeVaney, Gloucester born girl who now lives in Southern Maine but returns to “Gloucester, my anchor” every year, stopped in for a nice visit.  It was so good to finally meet you, Leslie – go home and get painting.  Paul Frontiero, Ed Collard, his daughter Amy and her fiancé Adam, the other Ciaramitaro’s (Charity, James and Laine) were here, as were Paul and Sue (Lovett) Morrison, Dr. Nicole and family, Guest Artist, Dottie Englander, Schooner Adventure’s Peter Souza, Richard and Lois Arnold from the Phyllis A. stopped in for a couple of calendars (one to send to 90 years old Phyllis, who the Phyllis A was named after), Wendie Demuth and more good and wonderful people were here.

Putting out an early announcement of upcoming competitions at the Gallery.  On September 18th, we will be holding the First Annual GMG Lobster Roll Competition, and at the Grand Finale Mug Up on October 2nd, we will be holding the First Annual GMG Bloody Mary Competition (Bob Ryan, Ryan and Woods Distilleries’ Beauport Vodka needs to be part of this).  Mark your calendars now and start working on your entry recipes.  We are also putting out calls for judges.  There are already 3 confirmed judges for the Bloody Mary competition (Wendie “It’s 5:00 pm somewhere” Demuth, Charity “I’m sweet and charming and I don’t drink, but I love Bloody Mary’s” Ciaramitaro, and Ed “No one knows a good Bloody Mary like me” Collard), but we need one more judge.

We don’t yet have any confirmed lobster roll competition judges, except Joey C.)  Now of course to create a winning lobster roll, the lobster should ideally come from Capt. Joe & Sons, not contain foreign objects like jalapenos or other strange ingredients like miracle whip or celery; however, this is a competition, and Joey will not be the sole judge, so feel free to give it your best with whatever ingredients you think make the best lobster roll.  If you believe yourself sufficiently qualified to be a lobster roll judge, please respond with your credentials asap.  There is bound to be fierce competition for these coveted judgeship positions.

Laurence Kent Jones Represents

Laurence Kent Jones represents at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery on the day that he took down his exhibit “Proprietary Chaos” at the Rocky Neck Gallery (which I luckily got to see and photograph in the morning before it came down), and just days before leaving for his next assignment in Hong Kong.  Laurence spent the last 4 years in Haiti and will spend the next 3 in Hong Kong.  Although he lives in Gloucester, he doesn’t get to spend much time here, so he really appreciates Good Morning Gloucester for keeping him connected while he is away.   Laurence is Chief of American Citizens Services for the U.S. Consulate.

Lisa Kennedy Represents

Lisa Kennedy of Defiance Sail Charters (www.defiancesailcharters.com) represents at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery on Rocky Neck.  Captains Raffi Kassabian and Lisa Kennedy operate charters aboard the 49′ Hinckley Windfall out of Gloucester in the summer, and the Bahamas in the winter.  Now, as Joey would say, “that doesn’t suck”.

Did You Know? (Summer and Mug Ups Won’t Last Forever)

If you’ve always said you want to catch Mug Up at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester on Madfish Wharf, but haven’t yet (Jenn Cullen), summer is waning and there will only be a few more Mug Ups before we close up shop for the winter at 77 Rocky Neck.  So . . . come on over this Sunday at 10:00 and join us for some good food, company and conversation.  No one bites, except Paul Frontiero occasionally and not very hard, and its always fun.

Did You Know? (Schooner Adventure Flea)

Today until 2:00 there is a flea market going on at the Marine Railways featuring nautical stuff, tools and fleas – part of the proceeds benefit the Schooner Adventure.  There are also tours all day into the evening of the Schooner Adventure, and Peter and Joanne Souza will be on board until 10:00.  A good place to check out some of the activity in the harbor, pick up some flea stuff, and learn about the historic Schooner Adventure.

Grand Finale Night on the Neck

Photos by E.J.

A few shots from our Grand Finale Night on the Neck on Madfish Wharf.  Bird Mancini was in rare form and definitely lively-ed up the place.  T Max stopped by and joined in for a piece with his old Urban Caravan buddies.  It was a beautiful evening, although you could feel the nip of fall in the air.  Everyone had a good time, even the dogs, and Isla served up a heap of dark and stormies.

Night on the Neck Grand Finale

August’s Night on the Neck was even better than July’s Night on the Neck; but watch out for September, the Grand Finale Night on the Neck for the season.  Don’t miss it.  Back by popular demand, the incomparable Bird Mancini returns to Madfish Wharf (7:00-8:30pm).  September Night on the Neck, Thursday, September 1st 5:00-9:00 pm.

Also, Thursday will be the final day of Sinikka Nogelo’s exhibit at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck, so if you haven’t been in to see it, this will be your last chance.  She will be here during Night on the Neck, so you can see her too.

Live Paint Factory Demo Photos Did You Know? (Man Cage)

Some photos of the Paint Factory this morning with a crane and man cage being used to remove any potentially toxic materials from the roof and front (water overhanging) side of the shed of the paint factory.  I spoke with Crosby Martin of McConnell Enterprises, the dismantling and recycling company handling this portion of the project.  As you can see from the photos, this shed building section of the paint factory is in the process of falling into the harbor, so remediation is being done to make sure nothing of a toxic nature goes into the water when this building is dismantled.  All other segments of the plant from the peaked roof you can see behind the shed forward will be restored and maintained.

Did You Know? (Sista Felicia’s Bista Zugu Goes Global)

That my sister, Judy Wilburn, who first introduced me to GMG a year ago May, was intrigued by Bista Zugu and so googled it?  First came up my GMG Bista Zugu mug up post.  Next came up http://www.silobreaker.com/did-you-know-bista-zugu-5_2264811490122924046.  Silo Breaker is a search service for news and current affairs that aims to provide more relevant results to the end user than what traditional search and aggregation engines have been offering so far. Instead of returning just lists of articles matching a search query, Silobreaker finds people, companies, topics, places and keywords; understands how they relate to each other in the news flow, and puts them in context for the user through graphical results in its intuitive user interface. In other words, Sista Felicia’s bista zugu has gone global.  Cool!  There is also a strange, but apparently relevant graph that connects Hurricanes, Tropical Storm Irene, Zucchini, Chris White and Geneva with Paul Morrison at the center http://www.silobreaker.com/FlashNetwork.aspx?FreetextSearchStrings=bista+zugu.

Silo Breaker also reports good news for all chocolate lovers (my sister, Judy being a major one).  A research has indicated that a daily dose of dark chocolate could slash the risk of developing heart disease by a third.  So skip the broccoli and go for the dark chocolate.
