Shark at Lighthouse Beach

Shark at Lighthouse Beach

Shark at Lighthouse Beach2

I just came across these YouTube videos of a shark at Lighthouse beach last summer.  I had heard about it, but hadn’t seen it and didn’t realize it had been videoed.  I especially love what the people in the background are saying.  “We should get Good Morning Gloucester down here.  This is headline news.”   So, better late than never.  Here on Good Morning Gloucester – the shark at Lighthouse Beach.  I don’t know who took the video, but nice job!

Don’t Miss This Opening – Sure To Be Amazing

Charlie is really a genius with a camera and editing software.  Opening Reception, Friday, July 27 from 7-9:00 pm at Wendie Demuth Photography, 77 Rocky Neck Ave., Gallery 4.

Because of the construction and repaving of the lot at the Marine Railways, there is no overflow parking there for at least the next two weeks.  Don’t let that stop you from coming over to Rocky Neck.  Take the Gloucester Harbor Water Shuttle from Harbor Loop/Jacobs Landing every hour on the hour, or from St. Peter’s Landing every 15 minutes after the hour.  They’ll drop you right at Madfish Wharf.  No reservations necessary – purchase tickets on board $10 adults, $5 children 6-12, under 6 free.

Gaze Into My Crystal Ball

Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery will be offering a unique and otherwordly experience to Rocky Neck visitors this weekend – psychic readings with Joy.  Guest psychic, energy healer and Feng Shui consultant, Joy Kasmer, comes to us from Salem, MA where she has worked at Laurie Cabot’s and The Psychic Center at Pickering Wharf.  She will be at Khan Studio Friday from 4:00-9:00pm, Saturday from noon-6:00pm and Sunday from noon-8:00pm.  If you’ve never had a reading or energy healing and always thought you would like to, or if you have and it is time for an update, come on by and meet Joy.  Special Guest Psychic Reading Rates are 15 minutes for $25 and 30 minutes for $45.

Joy’s readings are a lovely mix of angel readings, pendulum, crystal therapy, psychic intuition, mediumship and channeling. It’s important to know that psychic readings reveal the most probable outcome based upon the intentions, thoughts and desires of individuals involved at that moment in time.

ArtRocks! Paul Frontiero with some Adoring Fans

“Melen” (Mary Helen) Landergren found one of Paul’s ArtRocks by Good Harbor Beach in September.  For Christmas, she gave it to Nancy Silva, her best friend of 38 years, who had long wanted an ArtRock.  MH is also married to Don called D, Nancy’s brother, and their son was one of the unsuccessful videotaped searchers looking for the rock hidden at Capt. Joe & Sons that Patti Keenan’s husband found (if you remember that incredibly funny video, featuring some historic Ed Collard footage).  It has been a family mission to find an ArtRock.  They came to Mug Up Sunday so they could meet the famous Paul Frontiero, Jr. and thank him in person.  I love stories with happy endings, don’t you!

What’s Cookin on Amazon

What’s Cookin, 185 Washington Street http://wcgloucester.com/.  Brian Rice is a great cook, and an all around great guy.

They say, “If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen” — and that’s fine because you don’t want to spend all day baking during a 90-degree heatwave anyway. Savor outstanding grub without all the roasting when you grab today’s deal from What’s Cookin’?: $15 for $30 to spend on prepared meals, sandwiches, soups, and more.

Opened in 2011, this Gloucester eatery has proven to be a cut above the rest by specializing in creative dishes made from locally sourced North Shore produce and seafood. Enjoy a new twist on classic dishes like a chicken salad sandwich with cranberries, scallions, and toasted almonds, or a portabella panini on crusty ciabatta. Whether you want to pick up a fresh-made lunch or a prepared entrée to take home for dinner (we love the pulled pork with homemade barbecue sauce), you’d better grab this sizzling deal while it’s still hot.

Cape Ann by Air

These are some great aerial shots of Rocky Neck and Annisquam taken by Tom Bernie of Gloucester, from his cool little red plane that he built.  The 1st shot is of Tom ready to take off from NH, the 2nd shot is one I took of him flying over Rocky Neck, and the bottom shot is one he took of Smiths Cove with me standing on the dock behind Madfish Grille shooting him.  He didn’t know I was there, and I was returning from shooting the Picton Castle when I heard the plane and looked up in time catch him.  The moral of this post is, wherever you go and whatever you are doing, you never know when someone might be photographing you, so smile – you’re on candid camera! – especially on Cape Ann.

The Sailing Conways

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.  So throw off the bowlines.  Sail away from the safe harbor.  Catch the trade winds in your sails.  Explore… Dream… Discover…”  Mark Twain

This is the quote on the card of the Conway Family (Dad-Chris, Mom-Erica, Bryson, Riesling and Porter) from Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey who came into the gallery and were just such a pleasure and inspiration to meet.  They are on day 16 of a year long sailing adventure aboard their 47′ sailboat s/v Patronus.   Check out www.conwaysailors.com to learn more about them and follow their adventure.

Chris is an active father, a successful businessman, a talented woodworker, a wannabe meteorologist, and a lifelong sailor.  He enjoyed years of racing sailboats with his family, at Cornell University, and at premier levels of the racing world.  Highlights of his racing career include the Transatlantic Race (New York to England), Fastnet (England), and Cowes Week (England).  These days, he enjoys being a dad to Bryson, Riesling, and Porter.  He is excited about sharing his love of sailing, adventure, and the sea with his children.  In preparing for our trip, he has taken an intensive diesel engine repair and maintenance course, researched every possible piece of equipment from bow to stern, and has pored over the charts from Maine to Grenada.  Chris had to come to Gloucester, which he has a fascination with due to our fishing and maritime history, and he loves “Wicked Tuna”.

Erica is a stay-at-home mom who has always felt most at home when on the ocean.  She was boating by 11 weeks old and has never stopped.  As achild, she enjoyed powerboating with her family and lived on a boat for 6 years on Long Island, New York.  In college, she began racing sailboats and fell in love with the wind.  And Chris.  Chris and Erica met on the Cornell Sailing Team, racing dinghies together and traveling around the country.  They dreamed of getting married and having three children some day, during those early months of starry-eyed dating.  They graduated, got married, and continued to race until having children 10 years ago.  Erica can’t wait to watch her three children feel at home on a boat.  Most importantly, she can’t wait to show them that we can make our dreams come true.

I love Madfish Sushi and the Madfish Sushi Guys

I have never been a fan of sushi . . . until now.  Alma McLaughlin took me to dinner at Madfish to celebrate the successful completion of my Kickstarter project, and I decided to try Jordan and Sang’s sushi.  I have to say it is the most incredible thing I have ever eaten.  Even if you don’t think you like sushi, you owe it to yourself to try Madfish Sushi.  In addition to being masterful sushi chefs, Jordan and Sang are also really cute and the nicest guys you will meet.  Don’t take my word for it, try it yourself.  Your mouth will thank you, and it is so good for you too.  Check out their menu here.

The Barque Picton Castle

The Barque Picton Castle is a three-masted tall ship based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada but best known for sail training voyages around the world to ports in the United States and Canada, Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and the Spanish Main.

The Picton Castle is tied up at the Marine Railways and will be here until Saturday morning.  She and her crew came here from Newport, RI where they took part in the Ocean State Tall Ships event.  Pictured above at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery are Picton Castle purser, Kate “Bob” Addison from England, and Capt. Daniel Moreland from Nova Scotia.

Each year Sail Training International recognizes excellence by handing out awards to sail trainers, volunteers and sail training organizations large and small. This year, at the conference in Toulon, France, Captain Daniel Moreland was recognized as Sail Trainer of the Year.  He has sailed for years out of Gloucester, and was good friends with Joe Garland.
