Musician Bitten by Alligator on Madfish Wharf

You never know what you’ll see on Rocky Neck.  This photo was taken during June Night on the Neck on Madfish Wharf of a small alligator leaping and attacking one of the musicians in rockin zydeco blues band, Squeezebox Stompers – no one was injured.

This Thursday, September 6th, is the final Night on the Neck for the season on Rocky Neck.  Don’t miss it.  Always a great time, great music, fun, awesome galleries to check out as well as the new Center at Rocky Neck.  Make sure to do the scavenger hunt, and watch out for alligators!

Parade of Sails Watchers

Thanks Richard for letting me shoot from your yard.  While I got some of the sails, I had more fun shooting the people watching the parade, including Ed on the CERT boat catching his great shots, some Rocky Neck artists and a couple of homies.

Fascinating to watch them maneuver those massive logs around and then lift and pop them into the hole on deck.  Much scurrying about and preparation to get Adventure ready to go out with the others for Schooner Festival.  See Greg Bover working hard and looking like a handsome sailor.

Book Arrives on Madfish Wharf

Tales of Bong Tree Island arrived today on Madfish Wharf.  Here Con-Way Trucking backs onto the wharf and a flurry of artist friends and neighbors arrive on the scene to help unload the huge pallet of boxes and move them into the gallery.  I unpacked the first box and immediately sold my first book to Valerie Ricker from Randolph, MA.  Come by the gallery any time to check it out.  Also, there will be a book launch Saturday and Sunday, 9/8&9 from noon to 5:00 and a Backer Reward Party (although everyone is welcome) on Sunday 9/9 from 5:00-8:00.  Come by and enjoy a September Rocky Neck fling at Khan Studio and the GMG Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck Ave., G3.

Did You Know? Gloucester Fisherman’s Memorial

That English sculptor Leonard Craske (1882-1950) designed the sculpture of the Gloucester Fisherman’s Memorial on Rocky Neck at the site of what is now Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery G3 and the Last Chance Gallery G2, which previously were one large single space?

The English sculptor Leonard Craske (1882–1950) designed the sculpture, and it was cast by the Gorham Company of Providence, Rhode Island, in 1925.  Generally acknowledged as Craske’s finest work, the Gloucester Fisherman’s Memorial is viewed by thousands of visitors annually and has become a symbol of the city, commemorating Gloucester’s link to the sea.

It gives me a whole new appreciation for the space where I spend so much of my time.

For Kathy Downer

FOB Kathy Downer has a cottage on Long Beach and had asked a number of times why no one on GMG ever puts up photos of Long Beach.  I’d never been there until Violet took me there during my intimate island tour.  So these photos are for you Kathy and everyone else who visits and loves Long Beach.

Thank you Tyler and Domenic – Cape Ann SUP Rocks!

I have long wanted to try stand up paddleboarding.  I ran into Tyler a week or so ago and told him again that I wanted to try to carve out a time to go out on one before summer was over.  He said that he would be happy to do a Rocky Neck demo session.  Yesterday from 4:00-6:00, Cape Ann SUP co-owners, Tyler Knight and Dominic Olivo, came to Rocky Neck with a bunch of paddleboards so Rocky Neckers could try it out.  It was too bad that more people didn’t turn out, as there were plenty of boards and it was such a gorgeous afternoon, warm air and water with smooth waters at Oaks Cove where we went out.  I definitely want to try going out at night now on one of those lit up boards, although with my night blindness, I might crash into something.  If you haven’t tried paddleboarding, you owe it to yourself to get in touch with Tyler or Domenic and go out before it gets too cold.

Blueberry Mug Up Overload – And the Winners Are . . . drumroll please!

I am still reeling from blueberry and sugar overload from yesterday’s Mug Up Blueberry Bake Competition.  In addition to baked entries by Deb Shradieck, Joanne Souze and Joy Kasmer, there were also blueberry crumb cake and blueberry pie donations (thanks Violet Gray), as well as blueberry deviled eggs (unexpectedly good – it was Ed Collard’s idea) and the always delicious non blueberry contribution by Paul Morrison of Latoff Farms Monkey Bread.  Madfish Sushi god, Jordan Ruben’s father Greg was visiting and joined in the fun, and long time no see friends Pete and Joyce Chamberlain were in the house.  Of course, H.A. Lind was there with her beautiful exhibit of new Cape Ann focused paintings, here at the gallery through August 30.  If you missed her well attended opening yesterday afternoon, she will be having a meet the artist reception on Sunday, August 26th from 2:00-4:00.

The Winners of the Blueberry Bake Competition were:

#1 Best Overall Entry – Deb Schradiek’s Blueberry Cake

#2 Best Presentation and Most Unique – Joanne Souza’s Blueberry shortbread squares with fresh mint

#3 Best Blueberry Pancake You ever tasted in your life – Joy Kasner’s awesome huge blueberry pancake.  In addition to being a great blueberry pancake maker, Joy is also an amazing psychic and is still giving angel readings at the gallery, by appointment or evenings Thursday through Sunday.

The Esteemed Judges were major foodies Ed Collard and dapper looking in paisley, Paul Morrison, and Maine born and bred blueberry expert and Wendie Demuth’s squeeze, Langley Willauer.

Did You Know? (Lion’s Mane Jellyfish)

This photo of a Lion’s Mane Jellyfish was taken by Katherine Eyre at Eastern Point Yacht Club on Saturday, and was submitted by Violet Gray.  It looks like a flower blossom.

The lion’s mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata) is the largest known species of jellyfish. Its range is confined to cold, boreal waters of the Arctic, northern Atlantic, and northern Pacific Oceans, seldom found farther south than 42°N latitude. Similar jellyfish, which may be the same species, are known to inhabit seas near Australia and New Zealand. The largest recorded specimen found, washed up on the shore of Massachusetts Bay in 1870, had a bell (body) with a diameter of 7 feet 6 inches (2.29 m) and tentacles 120 feet (37 m) long.[1] Lion’s mane jellyfish have been observed below 42°N latitude for some time—specifically in the larger bays of the east coast of the United States.

Although capable of attaining a bell diameter of 2.5 metres (8.2 ft), these jellyfish can vary greatly in size, those found in lower latitudes are much smaller than their far northern counterparts with bells about 50 centimetres (20 in) in diameter. The tentacles of larger specimens may trail as long as 30 metres (98 ft) or more. These extremely sticky tentacles are grouped into eight clusters, each cluster containing over 100 tentacles,[2] arranged in a series of rows.

At 120 feet (37 m) in length, the largest known specimen was longer than a blue whale and is considered one of the longest known animals in the world.[1] In 1864, a Bootlace worm (Lineus longissimus) was found washed up on a Scottish shore that was 180 feet (55 m). But because bootlace worms can easily stretch to several times their natural length, it is possible the worm did not actually grow to be that length.

The bell is divided into eight lobes, giving it the appearance of an eight-pointed star. An ostentatiously tangled arrangement of colorful arms emanates from the centre of the bell, much shorter than the silvery, thin tentacles which emanate from the bell’s subumbrella.

Size also dictates coloration—larger specimens are a vivid crimson to dark purple while smaller specimens grade to a lighter orange or tan. These jellyfish are named for their showy, trailing tentacles reminiscent of a lion‘s mane.

The Lion’s mane jellyfish appears in the Sherlock Holmes short story The Adventure of the Lion’s Mane published in The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes. Holmes discovers at the end of the story that the true killer of a school professor who died shortly after going swimming was actually this jellyfish. Suspicion was originally laid upon the professor’s rival in love, until the latter was similarly attacked (he survived, although badly stung). In the context of the story, it is only because the school professor has a weak heart that he succumbs, as is confirmed by the survival of the second victim.

Most encounters cause temporary pain and localized redness.[8] In normal circumstances, and in healthy individuals, their stings are not known to be fatal. Common remedies include: vinegar, isopropyl alcohol, and meat tenderizer.[9]

On July 21, 2010, around 150 people are thought to have been stung by the remains of a lion’s mane jellyfish that had broken up into countless pieces in Rye, New Hampshire in the United States. Considering the size of the species, it is possible that this mass incident was caused by a single specimen.[10]

Ouch!  Hopefully there aren’t any more of these puppies floating around for people to get stung by.

Blueberry Mug Up Competition

Reports have come in that there were no Cape Ann blueberries, or any blueberries at all at the Farmer’s Market this week, so feel free to use Market Basket, Shaw’s, Willow Rest, or whatever blueberries you can get if you want to enter the blueberry bake competition at tomorrow’s Mug Up.
