Webinar on the Public Health Threats of Plastics

The League of Women Voters of Cape Ann will jointly host a webinar, “Plastics: the Mounting Threat to Public Health,” on January 28, at 4pm. Our speaker will be Dr. Philip Landrigan, MD. For information and registration visit https://bit.ly/mounting-threat.
The League of Women Voters is a co-sponsor of this timely and informative event.
About the Speaker
Dr. Landrigan is a pediatrician and epidemiologist, and he directs the program for Global Public Health and the Common Good at Boston College and the Global Observatory on Planetary Health. Dr. Landrigan has collaborated with other scientists to study the health impacts of plastics throughout their life cycles. He will share the study’s results and give his recommendations for taking bold steps now to reduce plastics and mitigate their health impacts. Dr. Landrigan will also respond to questions from the webinar audience.
The Issue with Microplastics
Microplastics pose an increasing threat to our health. They last forever and are everywhere – in the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the products we use. More work is needed to fully understand the health impacts of plastics accumulating in our bodies, but scientists have linked the particles to serious health problems, including cancer, heart disease, asthma, and disruption of the endocrine and reproductive systems.

CHASING FIRE IN THE SKY: Lanes cove
My view driving up Washington St. towards Lanes Cove on Saturday. I had to chase the end and see where it would land.

Of course it takes me to the cove for a better view. It was a raging windy day by the water. It felt like a steady 35-45 mph thumping. It had to have been a gale.

And upon turning down Duley St. I found a special moment. Lanes Cove at sunset never disappoints. And behold, with the wind bearing down so hard I could barely keep my feet steady, this was my reverse view. Pay-dirt.

A wispy dance of color, clouds, and rain painted a glow that could take your breath away. And, so it did.
May we never forget how fortunate we all are to live in such a place of perfect beauty and heritage.

Capturing the Perseid Meteor Shower Over Gloucester | Stunning Green Flash
After a long year of waiting for the Perseid meteor shower to re-appear, it clearly paid off. I went for the “finger on the shutter-button” approach the other night. I stood still for 2 1/2 hrs. to try and capture a few of the flying fireballs shooting across us over Gloucester. This was the first one, and the best one I managed to capture. I had hundreds of “trigger” practice shots before this one, so I felt ready. Usually it’s a miss, but this one just seemed to happen just in time. It appears on the screen just like it looked to the eye, a big fire filled green flash! I shot this on a Sony EV Z1, with a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lens. Exposure was set for 2 seconds, so you can imagine the nerves trying to snag a shot. You can see the amazing aurora that was happening that night on the right side as well, taken Aug. 12th, 12:08 am. The medeor is traveling left to right, the green is picked up as the tail.

A classic shot of the boys from one of my old videos.
Get there!!
GREASY POLE BEER?
Yep, that’s right. A brewery finally made the move, and we now have an amazing beer to celebrate Fiesta with! I love that it’s a “Walka” going down and not reaching for the flag, epicness! I don’t know if it’s based off a real walker’s attempt or not, so I’ll investigate. But, either way, it’s friggin FANTASTIC! (and I’m not a pilsner guy) I got mine at the newly relocated MODERN BUTCHER in Danvers. The place is AMAZING! That’s the sandwich I got to go with it, a Nashville Hot-Honey w pickes, also the best chicken sandwich I’ve ever eaten. Get ya some!! Beer: 9.2
Sandwich: 9.7

That sandwich was a double stack thighs!

Can’t you taste the flava!!!
