Paint Factory in Rough Shape, originally uploaded by captjoe06.

The Paint Factory isn’t looking so good.

It’s too bad that the guy that proposed to make a residence out of the place and maintain the exterior exactly the way it is wasn’t allowed to. Otherwise instead of deteriorating like this, it could have been preserved for all of us to enjoy and payed for with private dollars.

The obstructionists that got in the way can rejoice in another project they stymied.

Hooray!

Cape Ann Animal Aid Pet of the Week

Hello,

Meet Vivi! This adorable 11-month-old short-legged pup is full of love, energy, and personality! Vivi is a social butterfly who gets along great with kids and other dogs, making her an ideal companion for an active family. Vivi is still very much a puppy at heart and has the energy to prove it-she’ll thrive in a home that can give her plenty of playtime, exercise, and mental stimulation. She’s also a big fan of chewing so some good toys that will help satisfy her urge to chew should be a bit hit with her! While Vivi is sweet and friendly with people and dogs, like many pups, she can’t resist chasing after squirrels and rabbits. Because of this, she’s not a good fit for a home with cats or other small animals. She’s a great co-pilot for car rides which she loves and is also crate trained! Vivi is truly a happy little love bug who’s very enthusiastic about finding her forever home! Do you think she sounds like the perfect pup for you?

Vivi is now a part of our extended stay club, meaning that her adoption fee has been reduced in hopes that she may find a home a bit easier! Apply for Vivi today at: capeannanimalaid.org/dogapp

250th Anniversary of the Battle of Coffin’s Beach From Tom Mooney

  • To All of You History Buffs,

Today, August 5,2025 marks the 250th anniversary of the battle of Coffin’s Beach. On August 5, 1775 the HMS Falcon, commanded by Captain John Linzee, was patrolling the coast off Ipswich Bay. According the the most popular narrative Captain Linzee sent 50 marines ashore to gather sheep he spotted grazing on Peter Coffin’s farm. Major Coffin spotted the attack. He gathered about a half dozen men who, while taking cover in the sand dunes, began firing at the marines forcing them to retreat back the their ship.

However, the Boston Globe posted a story on August 16, 1908 which, while similar in many aspects, differed in a very meaningful way. It turns out that Peter Coffin was an ardent supporter of the Revolution. He had been suppling food and money to revolutionaries in Boston which was under British control since Bunker Hill. In this telling Captain Linzee had two objectives. One was to secure food for his sailors but the other was to “wreak vengeance on the Coffin place.” His orders were to leave the buildings of Coffin’s farm in ashes and disperse the flocks. Then, once the farm was taken the marines were to approach the town of Gloucester from the weakly defended North. This would facilitate the destruction of the town when augmented by an attack from the sea by the Falcon which was to sail around Cape Ann. The Falcon did sail around Cape Ann and attacked Gloucester from the sea. This attack is known as the Battle of Gloucester and it took place on August 8, 1775. The Falcon’s attack was not supported by land forces and was relatively unsuccessful.

Whatever the story, we all owe our thanksto Peter Coffin for his service to the nation 250 years ago.

Calling Greasy Pole Champ Nick White

Dear Morning Gloucester Team,

I hope this message finds you well. I recently react your article about Nick White and his impressive win as the 2025 Greasy Pole Champion. I’ve been trying to get in touch with him but haven’t had at luck locating his contact information through public channels.

I’m trying to reach him because in Sicily, on the feast of SS Salvatore, the patron for the small town of Cefalu’ once a year on August 6 there is a Greasy Pole to celebrate the patron of this town. It is called ‘A’NTINNA A Mari.  Most of the people in this feast are fisherman. Please see some of the screen shots  to get the flag. This team can be checked in the Guinness  World record.

I do not know if Nick White is interested in participating with the Italian team in the States.

I am trying to communicate with the Italian Sons and daughters of Italy Organization in Massachusetts.  ( info.massOSDIA@gmail.com) phone 617-489-5234) to see if they would be interested in sponsoring the team from Sicily, when they have the feast in June for St. Leo in Gloucester, MA.

I sent some  pictures for the Greasy Pole that will take place August 6 in Sicily, town of Cefalu’ for the

‘A’NTINNA  A  MARI.

In Italy. 🇮🇹

Thank you for your help.
