Cape Ann Y Golf Tournament

The Glen T. MacLeod Cape Ann YMCA is preparing for its second annual Golf Tournament, to be held on Monday, October 2, 2023! This outstanding event is raising funds to benefit the children and families in our Cape Ann service area with a demonstrated financial need.

This year, the goal is to provide nearly a million dollars in financial assistance for childcare, memberships, and specialized sports and wellness programs, including Cornerstone which provides complimentary access to our facility and support programming for those battling cancer.
Because of the generosity of the business and individuals in our community, we not only have the Y that Cape Ann truly deserves but we can also provide hope, health, and healing to friends, neighbors, and families in our communities. 100% of the proceeds raised will go directly into the Glen T. MacLeod YMCA’s financial assistance program.

The tournament is open to all individuals who enjoy playing golf and want to make a difference. Businesses can support by providing items to go in the raffle and/or sponsorship. Register and learn more here.

Here is one example of how life-changing financial assistance can be for our friends and neighbors:

This membership changed my life. As a single mom, the amount of resources offered to me at the Y is numerous. Being able to bring my child with me to the Kids’ Club while I explore new fitness opportunities has helped me reclaim my body and my life. I love trying new classes and programs- even things that are out of my comfort zone are made welcoming by how kind the instructors are and the culture created by other Y members. I never would have seen myself going to “strength train together” or “rise and shine boot camp” but the Y has allowed me to make fitness a central part of my life, in a way that no other gym could. The offerings at the Cape Ann YMCA feel akin to a boutique gym but are accessible to people like me with limited resources. Thank you.

Magnificent Manny From Eleanor Marks

Dear Joey,

Manny’s photos are amazing!

He is a gifted, reliable, incredibly generous, SO creative and devoted contributor to making the magic of GMG fly.

I am in awe of how he can put people at their ease and draw them into spontaneous, natural, beautiful character studies…no matter what age, what background, their faces come alive and you just wanta know more about them, and you realize: Manny is truly our good-will Ambassador, welcoming them to Gloucester with photographic honor and hugs.

Just look at his work with happy people on the harbor shuttle, hard-working people on the docks (like you Joey!), school students in Gloucester, and man’s best friend: he goes for it, everyday, and it must take hours…

His posts about DES and Our Lady of Good Voyage and the St Peter’s Fiesta bring such important (and beautiful!) recognition to faith, family and generations of people who (along with many others) just make this place so real, so alive, so down to earth and not “fake for tourists.”

I grew up in Cape May long before it got discovered and so over-developed. We always called our walkway along the ocean “the promenade.”

Half the time i still call Stacyboulevard “the promenade” too! Why? Because people LOVE to walk this gorgeous, flower-filled (or sleet hammered) way, great for dogs and wheelchairs and strollers because people CRAVE being close to the Ocean, as close as they can get by “promenading” for joy, health, pleasure…

“Dar un paseo, dar un paseo.”

Manny, you and your photos are an absolute treasure and a magnificent monument to the real Gloucester, our Gloucester and its heart: our boulevard, our promenade.

Thanks Joey for sticking up for Manny (and our town) in the most positive, passionate way!

Abrazos!

Eleanor Marks

Guess who made the cut after triple bogeying and needing to sink the final hole for birdie to make it for the Mass Senior Am????!!!! Our Boy Chris McCarthy!!!

We will be featuring some of Gloucester’s best golfers on a special GloucesterCast to discuss what it takes to bring home the cup to Bass Rocks!!!

Recently Our Friend and GMG contributor Manny Simoes made a spelling error and took liberty of calling the Boulevard “Gloucester’s Promenade”

The unbelievable amount of people flying out of the woodwork to correct Manny was dis heartening.

I should know after 15 years blogging that it’s just the way it is.

People’s minds who reside in negativity live for the mistakes of others and relish the chance to point out other’s mistakes.

The lesson is this- you need to understand that these people while they rush to criticize are really the minority and you should feel sorry for them.

They have to live inside that hyper negative world.

The good part for the rest of us if we understand this is that we don’t have to hang around them and value the positive uplifting people in our lives that much more.

Surround yourself with people that are trying to lift others up instead of tear them down.

I promise you’ll be happier for it.

Watch the video. Don’t be the jackass that’s criticizing people that are trying to make our community a better place. Fuck those people.

Gloucester 400 Fishing Heritage Festival From Alice Gardner

Hi Joey ,

A beautiful morning at the Gloucester Fisheries Heritage Festival under the tent at Jodrey State Fish Pier – mending the nets , a fascinating dory filled with all the kinds of fish caught in Gloucester , the beautiful Fishermen’s Wives quilt and much more . The Gloucester plus 400 committee did a terrific job . A fun event .

Alice Gardner

Maritime Gloucester, with Adventure, Isabella and Ardelleas a backdrop, provided an exceptional setting for Friday night’s performance under clear skies of Gloucester Story. Set in 1905, this 1954 fictionalized play features the interactions among fishing families, a schooner and its crew, business associates, and life at sea. The musical, which runs through Sunday, is presented as part of Gloucester’s 400th anniversary by the Annisquam Village Players.
