The Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library Corporation will be hosting its Annual Meeting on Wednesday evening, November 15, 2023, at the Gloucester Stage located at 267 East Main Street in Gloucester from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. with corporators sign-in beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The meeting will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with a welcome by the President of the Library’s Board of Trustees, Mern Sibley, followed by remarks by Mayor Greg Verga. A construction update of the 2025 Sawyer Free Library renovation, modernization, and expansion project will be provided by Jon Rich, president of the construction management firm W.T. Rich. In addition, new members of the Library Corporation and Board of Trustees will be elected, and the Mary M. Weissblum Volunteer Award will be presented to Kecia German for her years of service to the Library. The evening will also feature a special presentation to Beth Pocock, who recently retired after a decade of exceptional service as the Assistant Library Director.

I ask for and appreciate your support in my reelection campaign for one of four At-Large seats on the Gloucester City Council.
I bring critical experience as a current At-Large Councilor and chair of Planning and Development, as well as a previous two-term Ward 1 Councilor serving at a time when our city was facing extremely difficult financial challenges.
We face some extraordinary challenges in our community as we reckon with the local impacts of climate change and the nationwide housing crisis. We can’t just shut the gate and pretend nothing will happen. How we manage the next couple of years of planning and decision making will determine whether we maintain a mixed community of all socioeconomic levels or become yet another beachside community for the affluent. We continue to need housing that is affordable for working and middle class people, our seniors and so importantly, our children and their families who will inherit the consequences of our choices.
From passing the flood plane zoning ordinance to strengthening and enforcing inclusionary zoning so that every major housing development must contain deed restricted affordable housing, I’m committed to making decisions today with an eye on our future.
We continue to have infrastructure issues with our roads, our water delivery system and a looming Federally mandated secondary sewer treatment plant. And as always, in my heart and mind, are our schools and the ongoing need to provide our children with the best opportunities in life and education that we can.
Further we need to be a community that is inclusive, and safe, for our residents. Hate has no place in our community. As a liaison to the Gloucester Human Rights Commission, I will continue to support their efforts on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community, POC, immigrants and other marginalized people. We are a community of immigrants from our founding days 400 years ago. We have an obligation to welcome all who choose this island as their home.
Sarah and I raised our family in Gloucester and have thrived by virtue of the amazing community around us. Running for election serves both as a means of repaying that community, as well as helping to do my part to ensure that Gloucester remains a place where our next generation of young people can live and raise their families.

Temple Ahavat Achim lights the Lobster Trap Menorah!
As part of the Gloucester400+ celebration, T.A.A. invites the community to join them as they light the world’s only Lobster Trap Menorah to celebrate Channukah.
The outdoor event will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 5:30pm, with songs, sweet treats, and the lighting ceremony. Afterwards, the public is invited indoors for a free concert by Ezekial’s Wheels Klezmer Band, featuring our own Abigale Riesman.

Chief Edward Conley is pleased to announce that the Gloucester Police Department is taking part in Operation Safe Watch in an effort to better serve seniors and others who may be prone to wandering, and an informational meeting has been scheduled to help explain the program.

SeniorCare Inc., 49 Blackburn Center, Gloucester, MA 01930
WHAT:
In partnership with SeniorCare Inc. and the Gloucester Council on Aging, Gloucester Police offers Operation Safe Watch, which will collect critical information that is needed by first responders as they respond to reports of missing people.
Anyone with loved ones at risk from conditions such as dementia, Autism, or other conditions, can register and provide police with information that will help locate a loved one in the event of an emergency.
Information that is collected, which includes things like sensory issues, habits and favorite places, will be saved by the police department for quick reference in the event of an emergency.
On Saturday morning, Gloucester Police and staff from SeniorCare Inc. and the Rose Baker Senior Center will join together to explain the program to interested community members, and to assist those community members with filling out intake forms. Interested residents are encouraged to bring a photograph of their loved one.
“This program will give our officers an immediate advantage should we have to initiate a search for a participant,” said Chief Conley. “I encourage anyone in the community who has a loved one at risk of wandering to sign up. Time is often of the essence when searching for missing individuals.”

RE-ELECT “Cool headed” Scott Memhard, Ward 1 City Councilor
Dear Ward 1 Friends and neighbors:
My name is Scott Memhard. I ask for your vote re-electing me your Ward 1 City Councilor. My experience and perspective will best serve you as we work together and City Hall.
I’ve lived and worked in Gloucester over 40 years. My wife Martha Oaks, Curator at Cape Ann Museum, was born here. Our three kids, Ian, Larry and Marie all went to East Gloucester, played local sports, attended college, and are blessed to still live and work nearby. The eldest of our four grandchildren started 1st grade at the beautiful new East Veterans School on Webster Street. I myself am a graduate of Amherst College.
As President of Cape Pond Ice Company for 40 years, where I work with my son Larry, I have weathered many challenges confronting Gloucester’s groundfish industry, harbor planning & land use.
Before elected office I also served our community as a Director & Board President of:
· The Sawyer Free Library, the Gloucester UU Church, and the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce.
· I’ve also served on the boards of Maritime Gloucester, Cape Ann Commercial Fishermen’s Loan Fund, Phyllis A Marine Association, and our Gloucester Fisheries Commission
· I am a Corporator of the Cape Ann Savings Bank,
I use the slogan “cool headed” because I am in the ice business, but more importantly because I know how to listen, to balance conflicting interests, and to not get overly excited. In our politics today, this is more important than ever.
A few Recent progress and accomplishments I have worked to help achieve:
We have a fantastic new Elementary School for Ward 1.
We have finally resolved thorny summer beach traffic and Beach parking, with on-line reservations.
In Ward 1 we have re-paved Hartz St., Harrison Avenue, Bass Avenue, Thatchers Road, and shortly Mount Pleasant Avenue, with newly replaced water and gas infrastructure.
I have worked with residents to re-pave some of our worst Private Roads through our Betterment paving program: Starknaught Heights and Oxford Road, 8 streets around Brier Neck and Salt Island, and Souther Road… We have made a start to improve the busily traveled private ways of Beach Road and Brightside Avenue. After 7 years, Ten abutters on Haskell Court will now finally have reliable private water service and a repaved roadway.
We have new affordable housing at the Cameron’s Harbor Village, and I look forward with you to the YMCA’s new affordable senior housing downtown, and a new Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library, such an important investment for our families and children for generations to come.
We need to work together to address the challenges facing Gloucester, without undue drama or inaccuracies. I have hosted regular neighborhood meetings to get constituent input and ishare information – on topics as wide ranging as Ten Pound Island and Living with Coyotes, to local development projects, proposed zoning changes, and access to City Budgets and website.
I value the unique beauty of our neighborhoods, the quality education in our schools, our City’s cultural richness. I respect our taxpayers and their precious tax funding of our municipal infrastructure and services . Like most of you, I have limited patience for unnecessary bureaucracy, waste and nonsense.
City Councilors to help you navigate and get what you need from City Hall. We facilitate access to the Mayor’s office and all the City’s departments. I’ve served 8 years on the Budget & Finance sub-committee, and have worked closely with those Department Heads as we review their budgets for staffing, capital investment and contracts.
We do need new zoning frameworks which respect neighborhood character, but also encourage affordable housing opportunities. We need more mixed industrial, marine technology for local jobs, filling the void left by a shrunken fishing industry. And I am working for a sidewalk along Farrington Avenue, connecting Niles Beach with the Back Shore. We have a beautiful City; let’s take care of it together with true “Gloucester Pride”!
