Hi Joey,
Titled the “World War II Veterans Portrait Project” the free exhibit, is taking place at City Hall, in the Kyrouz Auditorium.
This is an inspiring project that was put together by Jason Grow, a prominent portrait photographer that we are so lucky to have in Gloucester! 59 WWII Veterans from Cape Ann will be featured; the portraits are all black-and-white and each 16 by 24 inches.
There are four women in these portraits and Jason admits that he wish he could have found more to represent. As the male soldiers were dubbed the “Greatest Generation”, I think that the women of the WWII era should be known as being from “The Gracious Generation”. These women fought hard in and out of the military. As a caregiver myself, I have seen so many of these women caring for their husbands. They do this with poise, dignity, and without ever complaining; women that all future generations should aspire to emulate.
Here are two photos of my father, Ralph Hendrickson, who will be one of the 59 honored in the display. One photo here shows him as a 19 year old just entering the army. The other is Ralph 81 years later, still a humble and grateful man.
Cheers to these fine men and women!
All the Best,
Cindy Hendrickson
Rotary Club of Gloucester Supports International Surgeries
The Rotary Club of Gloucester recently sponsored a medical mission to the Philippines through Rotaplast International, a non-profit organization based in San Francisco, CA. The club’s support allowed for 122 surgical procedures to be performed on patients in Cebu City, on a south central island in the Philippines. Medical treatments focused on surgically repairing cleft lips, cleft palates and dental work for patients aging three months to 35 years. Medical Director Evelyn Abad explained, “Often children and adults with these deformities are shunned by their community. We give them a second chance to smile.”
The medical team consisted of eight non-medical volunteers from Rotary Clubs in the Greater Boston area as well as a team of surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nurses and Rotarians from California, Washington, Hawaii, and South Dakota. With three operating tables in use, the team was able to complete 122 surgical procedures and over 300 dental procedures. All medical treatment was free of charge to patients and many travelled up to six hours to visit the hospital in the central part of Cebu City. The team was supported locally by Filipino volunteers from the Rotary Club of Cebu City Port Center.
For photos and videos of the medical mission, visit www.rotary7930.org and click “2015 Rotaplast Mission” under the Club Information section.

Nearly 190 patients came to be seen by the Rotaplast team on the hospital’s 5th floor which was set up as a temporary staging area for the patients.
Cleft lip surgeries required the patients to stay in the hospital two nights.

A Washington, D.C. native, Nye graduated from the Sidwell Friends School before attending Cornell University, where he took an astronomy class from Carl Sagan and ultimately received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He began his career at Boeing, where among other tasks, such as 747 hydraulic systems design, he made training films for other Boeing engineers and clients. This work led him to science education in general and in 1993 he created the series “Bill Nye the Science Guy”. His mixture of comedy and hard science made this show a hit on PBS and in schools as a teaching aid. Nye continues to advocate the teaching of science to children at an early age as a method of developing reasoning. He has publicly debated creationists and refutes their opinions at every opportunity. Nye holds a number of diverse patents and is in demand as a commencement speaker.

I’m not really sure what’s worse. Totally undecided.
I understand that people can be reluctant to touch the port-a-potty locking mechanism which slides the indicator on the outside to “occupied” letting people know to wait to try to go in. But you can pull down your sleeve or ball up a bunch of toilet paper to close the latch.
Are you one of those people that rolls the dice and just hope no one tries to open it while you’re taking care of business?
For the record I’m totally in the ball up the toilet paper and use it so I don’t have to touch the handle kinda guys. I also make the landing pad before splashdown occurs- more on that here.

Hi Joey
Mold and forgotten history has damaged a distinctive 19th century jacket, our very own historic ‘coat of many colors’ worth more than the fabric itself!
80 years ago Roger Babson presented this Civil War era coat to the community during a town wide celebration for the 50th Anniversary of the Gloucester High School Cadets, an ROTC forerunner founded by Albert W. Bacheler (b. 1843 Indiana – d.1929 Melrose, MA). Bacheler was an esteemed principal of Gloucester High School for a staggering 30 years (1814-1913), a Civil War Veteran (New Hampshire regiment Army of the Potomac), and a Dartmouth alum.
Chairs for 1500 people were set up in advance of that event! Artist Charles Allan Winter designed the program!
You see, it wasn’t just any coat.
Back then everyone in Gloucester knew Babson and Bacheler and understood the many reasons that this very special coat was a gift for our City. Babson was a key speaker at the event and his topic was solely Bacheler and this coat. School teachers and colleagues said that Bacheler liked to show his students the coat as inspiration, a reminder that one never need to be discouraged. Principal Bacheler told students how this coat was given to him by a Virginia slave who harbored him after his escape from Richmond’s infamous Libby Prison during the Civil War. While this incredible story warrants our attention, verification and further exploration—what a great project for our students!
In 2015, the coat that remains to tell the story is in immediate need of our care.
A concerned parent noticed that the coat near ROTC and Veterans awards and memorials at Gloucester High School had developed mold and brought it to the attention of various folks in town. The coat is everyone’s artifact. The school budget, PTOs, City Archives, city committees, the Cape Ann Museum—none have a budget to pay for this coat repair. The coat has been examined by a professional textile conservator through the Committee for the Arts. This garment needs to be fumigated, cleaned and repaired. It also requires an armature to support it and new display. The estimate for treatment and preparing it for installation is $3800.
Come “see” the coat during Jason Grow’s WWII Veterans’ Portrait Exhibition at City Hall on Saturday, November 7, 2015, from 1-4pm. The coat is too fragile to travel at present and will be represented by a full size photograph thanks to the generosity of Cape Ann Giclee! thank you James!
Donations will be accepted at the event or checks can be mailed and made payable to The Gloucester Fund, 45 Middle Street, Gloucester, MA. PLEASE write “Civil War coat” in memo field on the check. We are setting up a youcaring site and will apply to Awesome Gloucester.
