Are fishcakes obsolete? No. 6 from Al Bezanson

After a podcast on fishcakes Monday morning with Joey I zoomed over to the Fort Square Café for a late breakfast.  Heidi served up this beauty from fresh hake.  She makes them only from time to time for her famed Cape Ann Reuben.

5:30AM Set up the kettle with a aluminum pan filled with water and briquettes set up snake style around the bowl for a low and slow sesh.  Lit 12 briquettes inn the chimney and dumped them on the left end of the trail of briquettes which we’re looking to gradually catch and provide steady even heat between 275-300 degrees.  using cherry chips and mesquite chunks.

I’m not sure if it’s just our local Stop and Shop market that pre-cuts the racks of beef ribs or if it’s done elsewhere as well.  I buy what’s on sale usually and they had 2.4 lbs on sale for $2.24 per lb so I couldn’t pass them up (you can’t see the sale tag in the first picture).

Did you know The Red Jacket Resort was named after a Famous Clipper ship Which Was Named After a Famous Indian?

A couple of weeks ago I was driving up North and when we passed through Newburyport I got to wondering why it was that Newburyport associated itself with Clipper Ships as opposed to Essex and Gloucester being associated with Essex built and Gloucester fished Schooners.

I emailed our boy Al Bezanson for some answers which he answered in yesterday’s GloucesterCast (listen here).

But then during school vacation I took the girls up to the Red Jacket Resort in North Conway which right around 40 years ago was the first place my parents took me on vacation.  When checking in at the Red Jacket Resort, right behind the desk was a framed print of the Clipper Ship The Red Jacket.

So I googled it.  Check out the results here and the interesting history of the Famed Clipper.

How soft are these kids today?

When I listen to a high school or college kid complain about not having enough time to do something or how difficult their life is I literally want to strangle them.  Not sure what’s worse, listening to a 30 year old male or female that’s never had a child talk about how they would handle a screaming 2 year old or a high school or college student talk about having it rough.

Newsflash- YOU WILL NEVER HAVE IT AS EASY AS YOU HAVE IT IN HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE IN YOUR ADULT LIFE.

Throwback Post- Fishtown Horribles Homie Float From Paulie Walnuts

Jesus that thing was a work of art- put together by Felicia, Barry, Ed, Jeremy Frost and I think Frank and Joey Ciolino.

This Post is in response of a comment made By Jay Albert in a previous post questioning if we really knew the meaning of the word Homie.

To view Jay Alberts beautiful images of Cape Ann click the link below http://capeannimages.blogspot.com/

Definition of “HOMIE

Shortened version of homeboy, homeboy being your close friend

From the Urban Dictionary
Homie;
Someone you grew up with, friend or not, and someone with whom you have shared any number of bonding experiences at home, in school, at work, or in any close-knit atmosphere. Homie means you have lived in the same area as this person for a significant amount of time in your life, but the term is appropriately used by those friends who truly feel comfortable referring to each other with such respect. It isn’t a word that should be taken advantage of, because a person recognizes who is a friend and who isn’t. Therefore, a true homie is always Down, while lesser friends will just be out to use you, borrow money from you, bum a ride in your car, etc.Uses;

Yo, homie, I’ll be at my house in case you want to come kick it later.

“Whassup homie”

Homie vs. Friends
Friends: Never asks for anything to eat or drink
Homies: Help themselves and are the reason why I have no food
Friends: Would bail you out of jail
Homies: would be sitting next to you sayin’ “THAT WAS FUCKING AWESOME!!! Lets do it again!”
Friends: Won’t laugh at you.
Homies: Will embarrass your Ass when everyone is around!
Friends: Has never seen you cry
Homies: Won’t tell everyone else you cried…just laugh about it with you in privately when your not still down.
Friends: Asks you to write down your number.
Homies: Have you on speed dial
Friends: Borrows your stuff for a few days then gives it back.
Homies: Loses your shit and tells you, “My bad…here’s a tissue.”
Friends: Only knows a few things about you
Homies: Could write a very embarrassing biography on your life story…
Friends: Will leave you behind if that is what the crowd is doing
Homies: Will kick the ASS of the enitre crowd that left you.
Friends: Would knock on your front door
Homies: Walk right in and say “I’M HOME”
Friends: Know some of your embarrassing moments…
Homies: Are next to you making them!
Friends: You have to tell them not to tell anyone
Homies: They already know not to tell…
Friends: Are only through highschool
Homies: They are for life
Friends: Will be there to take your drink away from you when they think you’ve had enough
Homies: Will look at you stumbling all over the place & say “Bitch drink the rest of that you know we don’t waste good shit!”

Jay, I never had one try to use me, borrow money from me or bum a ride in my car. Maybe poop on my car, But I’ve been shit on by Worse (Joey).

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

February is National Cancer Prevention Month. Some risks for cancer are out of your control (E.g. age and genetics.) Research shows that you can control other risk factors such as healthy eating and regular exercise to help lower the risk of cancer.

Recommendations for prevention includes –

  1. Maintain a healthy weight.
  2. Engage in physical activity at least 30 minutes every day. (Check with your doctor before beginning if you have not been exercising.)
  3. Avoid sugary drinks and food.
  4. Eat a plant-based diet (fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes.)
  5. Limit red meat (beef, pork, lamb.)
  6. Avoid processed foods and limit salt.
  7. Limit alcohol. (No more than 2 drinks per day for men, 1 for women.)
  8. Avoid all tobacco products!

Survey From Amy-Beth Healey

Good Morning Joey,

I was wondering if you might do something…

I am currently working on my Senior Thesis to finish my Bachelor’s degree in Business Management at Endicott College. As part of the primary data collection, I have put together a short (22 question), completely anonymous survey. And although it seems completely connected… this is personal, not for the Phyllis A, it just happened to be a very easy topic for me to research on. Would it be possible to have it shared on Good Morning Gloucester?

If not, I completely understand.

Here’s the link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ABHSurvey

Thanks!

Amy-Beth Healey

Executive Director

Phyllis A Marine Association, Inc.

Editors note: I took the survey, question 15 asks if Gloucester had a hand’s on children’s museum where children could learn about mid-20 century Gloucester seaside folk-life- (Don’t we already have Maritime Gloucester????) Is that not exactly what we already do have?  I don’t understand the “If” part.  We do.

15. If Gloucester, Massachusetts had a hands-on children’s museum, where children could learn about mid-20th century Gloucester’s seaside folk-life and bringing their seafood dinner from the ocean to the table, through play, how likely would you be to support/ visit that?
