
GLOUCESTER, MA – The City of Gloucester is hosting two events to celebrate Earth Day this April. The City will be hosting an Earth Day Flag Raising at City Hall, as well as an Earth Day Recycling Festival at O’Maley Middle School. Residents are encouraged to join the City and its partners at both events.
The flag raising will take place on Wednesday, April 22 at 12:00 pm in front of City Hall. Mayor Paul Lundberg will read a proclamation, and Gloucester’s Co-Poet Laureates, Heidi Wakeman and Jay Featherstone, will read poems to mark the event. The flag raising will be followed by a free screening of The Lorax (1972) at the Sawyer Free Library at 12:30 pm.
On Saturday, April 25, the City and partners will host an Earth Day Recycling Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at O’Maley Innovation Middle School, 32 Cherry Street, Gloucester.At the festival, Green Team Junk Removal will collect hard-to-recycle items while community partners will share information about a variety of sustainability-minded programs. Art Haven will provide free art activities during the festival and Brassfed Nation will perform from 10:00 – 11:00 am. Additional activities, music, and community vendors will participate throughout the day. Donations of canned and dried foods, as well as personal hygiene items, are also welcome.
Please note that individual fees apply per item for recycling. Payment for recycling will be accepted via cash, card, or check payable to “Green Team Junk Removal.” The list of fees for eligible items can be found here:

$10 each – Garden Furniture, Laundry Baskets, Trash and Recycling Bins, Car Seat
As a special incentive during the festival, residents can turn in their old dehumidifiers and receive a $30 rebate from National Grid. Those unable to attend can contact Green Team Junk Removal for pickup services.
Accepted Items for Recycling:
- Electronics – Computers, TVs, gaming systems, cell phones, and more.
- Appliances – Microwaves, refrigerators, dishwashers, washers, dryers, air conditioners, and more.
- Textiles – Clothing and blankets (must be clean and reusable).
- Other Items – Mattresses, box springs, propane tanks, car batteries, tires, Styrofoam, books, exercise equipment, and household/kitchen items for donation.
Green Team Junk Removal recycles, reuses, and donates 80% of what they haul, making it an excellent opportunity for residents to dispose of items responsibly.
Artists, musicians, or cultural organizations who are interested in participating in the Earth Day Recycling Festival should email Miranda Aisling, Arts, Culture, and Events Coordinator at mhynes@gloucester-ma.gov.
In their email, artists should include their name, contact information, how they would like to participate, and what the cost is for their proposed activity. The budget ranges from $250 – $500 for musical performances, art installations, or interactive art activities. There is no fee for participating cultural organizations.
