Dinner at 525

We sat at the bar at 525 last night in Magnolia and enjoyed a really great dinner. Big portions, tons of flavor, so well executed. Definitely swing by if you haven’t been in a while!

Operation Keep Gloucester Warm

From Together Gloucester, Inc.

❄️ Cold weather is on the way and we’re here to help. ❄️

As temperatures drop this weekend, Operation Keep Gloucester Warm will be opening our Annex at Brown’s Mall to provide free winter gear for anyone in our community who needs it.

🗓 This Saturday
🕥 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
📍 Brown’s Mall – Main Street entrance
➡️ Up the stairs on the left

We will have:

  • Winter coats from infant to adult 2x
  • Hats, mittens, and scarves
  • A limited supply of snow pants and boots

All items are free and available to anyone in need. Please stop by, spread the word, and help us make sure our neighbors stay warm this winter. 💙

Between Storms — pat morss

As we await a winter storm later this weekend, the wildlife carries on.

Touring the GMGI marine biology lab, I learned this species of sea urchincan live 200 years.
Close to the rocks, Common Eiders were comfortable with the cold and the gray skies.
A male Cardinal after the previous snowfall.
Possibly his mate, checking out female Goldfinches enjoying thistle seeds.
Isn’t it a little early to be prancing around the Maypole?
This Red-tailed Hawk isn’t letting on that it is being harassed by several crows.
Northern Mockingbirds shift to berries in the winter when summer insects aren’t available.
A “cat ‘o nine tails” is finally going to seed at Niles Pond.
After another pond thaw/freeze, the creation of these repeated “ice splashes” remains intriguing.
Incoming Mallards, to join the crowd on the ice.
“Watch out – it’s slippery.”
“Now you tell us!”
And another explosive winter sunset.

Yummy breakfast

On Sunday Rick and I like to go to breakfast.  Last Sunday, we went to Grillfriends for a great breakfast.  Rick had the traditional breakfast, and I had a garden omelet.  So tasty and the atmosphere at Grillfriends is friendly.

Webinar on the Public Health Threats of Plastics

The League of Women Voters of Cape Ann will jointly host a webinar, “Plastics: the Mounting Threat to Public Health,” on January 28, at 4pm. Our speaker will be Dr. Philip Landrigan, MD.  For information and registration visit https://bit.ly/mounting-threat

The League of Women Voters is a co-sponsor of this timely and informative event.

About the Speaker

Dr. Landrigan is a pediatrician and epidemiologist, and he directs the program for Global Public Health and the Common Good at Boston College and the Global Observatory on Planetary Health. Dr. Landrigan has collaborated with other scientists to study the health impacts of plastics throughout their life cycles. He will share the study’s results and give his recommendations for taking bold steps now to reduce plastics and mitigate their health impacts. Dr. Landrigan will also respond to questions from the webinar audience.

The Issue with Microplastics

Microplastics pose an increasing threat to our health. They last forever and are everywhere – in the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the products we use. More work is needed to fully understand the health impacts of plastics accumulating in our bodies, but scientists have linked the particles to serious health problems, including cancer, heart disease, asthma, and disruption of the endocrine and reproductive systems.

Winter Afternoon At Half Moon Beach

I took a little walk around Stage Fort Park following the recent snowfall. Naturally I had to swing down to Half Moon Beach which is my very favorite. You could almost hear the summer laughter rising and falling with the gentle winter waves.

Old Sloop Presents~Our next concert is Friday, February 6, featuring Crys Matthews. Thea Hopkins will open.
