Media Advisory: Cape Ann Artisans & North Shore Art Association Invite you to a Holiday Pop-Up Art Trifecta! –

The Cape Ann Artisans are pleased to join the North Shore Arts Association (NSAA) for its Annual Holiday Pop-Up alongside its two final shows of the season.  While NSAA hosts SYNERGY and a New Members Show, seven of the Artisans will display their work to create a festive marketplace for holiday shopping!

Synergy hosts up to 57 artists showcasing a range of artworks, each in their own windows of wall space combining the collaborative nature of group shows with the individuality of solo shows to create an unforgettable exhibition. 

Alongside these two shows, these Cape Ann Artisans will exhibit their work and invite you to share some festive refreshments to welcome the holiday season!  The exhibiting Artisans include:

The seven participating artisans are part of the larger group of 14 juried artisans that host the annual Spring and Fall Cape Ann Artisans Open Studios.   The Artisans have been an integral part of the arts seen since their founding 42 years ago.  Over the years, they have often collaborated to host a holiday event under one roof and exhibit their work out of the studio. Czech composer Antonin Dvorak’s famous Symphony No. 9, “From the  New World” will be the featured work when Music Director Robert Lehmann conducts the North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra “Fall Concert” on Sunday, November 16, 3 p.m. at Swampscott High School.

The concert marks the start of the NSPO’s 77th season.  Tickets can be purchased online at www.nspo.org, or at the door,  $35 for adults and $30 for seniors and students.  Admission is free for children 12 and under.

Also featured on the program will be the Massachusetts premiere of “The Golden Hour”,  a contemplative  piece that evokes the gentle texture of landscape bathed in golden light.  The piece was composed by Maine native Heather Hastings.  Ms. Hastings has written numerous works for band, chamber orchestra,  and orchestra.  Earlier this year she won the ‘Women Band Directors International Commission Competition.”

“Bachianas Brasuileiras No. 4” by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos and  the “Bal Masque for Orchestra” by American composer Amy Beach complete the concert program.  Amy Beach, a native of New Hampshire, became the first female composer to have a symphony performed by a major orchestra when the Boston Symphony Orchestra performed her “Gaelic” Symphony in 1896.

Dvorak composed his “New World Symphony” in 1893 after a journey to America, where he was influenced by Native American music and African-American spirituals.  The Symphony No. 9 is considered one of the most popular of all classical symphonies.

The North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1948, is now in its 77th season providing affordable access to quality classical music. The Orchestra, staffed primarily by volunteers, strives to develop, train, and provide opportunities for young musicians, while performing programs that span the full range of symphonic and Pops repertoire for a diverse public. Programs are funded in part by a grant from the Swampscott Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

We went back to The Burn on Main St. recently for lunch on one of these cold wet days. I’ll admit I was in search of some comfort in the form of food or drink! I had the rice bowl with carne asada and Jim got the lunch special fish chowder, burger and beer. The place was pretty busy and the service was friendly and prompt. We both enjoyed our entrees…Jim especially enjoyed the fish in his fish chowder. We look forward to returning.

The second cohort of the Class of 2026 begins in January, with spaces still available. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!

This innovative, hands-on training program prepares young adults for professional careers as life sciences laboratory technicians. Students spend six months of hands-on learning in a state-of-the-art teaching facility in Gloucester’s Blackburn Center, followed by a three-month paid co-op at a North Shore or Greater Boston biotech company.

The program is open to students ages 18-30 with a high school diploma or the equivalent. No math or science experience is needed to apply.

Once again, tuition and fees will be waived — in their entirety — for the Academy’s class of 2026. In addition, qualifying students can receive a stipend of $1,000 per month to help support their living expenses while training. GMGI is committed to providing STEM education opportunities to all, regardless of financial background.

Here’s the reality: about 1 in 400 women carry a BRCA gene mutation, but their lifetime risk of breast cancer can skyrocket up to 60 to 70 percent — compared to just 12.5 percent in the general population.And it doesn’t wait until old age. Many women under 50 — some in their 30s, even their 20s — are already facing tough, life-changing choices about surgeries, screenings, and their future.

They are called previvors — women who are taking control of their health before cancer has a chance to strike.In this episode, they are speaking with Eva Silverman, she’s a Riot Girl from New Jersey by way of Oakland and discuss what it means to live with the gene, the emotional and medical challenges behind every decision, and how awareness can quite literally save lives and what it’s like to be one bad ass taking charge doing so. 

She talks about having procedures to lower her risks of getting cancers that come along with the gene mutation. You may be surprised it’s not just breast cancer that comes with the BRCA gene!
