The Sawyer Free Library is pleased to host its community partner Wellspring, Inc. on Thursday, June 13 at 5:30 pm as they present HISTORY LIVES HERE and share the information they uncovered about the Freemans of West Gloucester, a prominent Black American family.
Born in 1731, Robin was enslaved to Captain Charles Byles, a mariner whose property was located across the street from Wellspring House. In his struggle to self-emancipate, Robin paid Capt. Byles 1# and 12 schillings in 1769 to secure his freedom. This was 21 years before there would be no recorded enslaved people in Massachusetts. When he died , Capt. Byles left Robin 40 schillings in his will.
In 1826, Robinโs son, Robert purchased this house and land and made it his family home. We will share with you the Freeman family stories of opportunity and resilience and learn more about their contributions to the Greater Cape Ann community. Your presence and interest honors Robin Freeman his family and their legacy.
All are welcome. No registration required. For more information, visit: sawyerfreelibrary.org

Did you know Maritime Gloucester is hosting weekly schooner challenges all summer on Tuesday evenings? We didn’t either but we happened to have tickets for Tuesday’s sail which was the first of the summer’s schooner challenges. These challenges are designed to give the apprentices some real life experience out on the water as captains. WE HAD SO MUCH FUN!
We were aboard the Isabella and AJ as our captain. The Ardelle was captained by Jack and Ben. It was a perfect evening to be on the water as the sun was setting. Good natured rivalry between the crews added to the enjoyment. We assisted with crew duties which may have impacted the results of the first race………I think we’ll do this again on another Tuesday soon. But other sails are available as well, so check MaritimeGloucester.org if you are interested. Great idea for visiting company!

WINE TASTING WITH DAVE BENDER OF VINEYARD ROAD WINES
Since 2000, Vineyard Road has offered high-quality and high-value wines that reflect their soils of origin. Some of the estates represented have been around for only 5 years. Others have been making wine for more than 500. Vineyard Road specializes in small production and artisanal producers who work in concert with the land to produce wines of distinct and authentic character.
Aoton Winery makes Greek wines from just under two hectares of organically farmed vineyards planted in the mid-1990s. Sotiris Gkinis, their young winemaker, has a remarkable passion for the indigenous grape varieties of Attica, Savvatiano, and Roditis. Aoton’s Roditis white is made from 100% Roditis grapes, from a mix of 30-year-old and 5-year-old vines, grown in soil of slightly alkaline clay and sand. The vines are subject to the temperate Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The grapes are hand-picked at night and carried to storage before sunrise to maintain their freshness and low temperature. They are concentrated in stainless steel tanks and stay there, refrigerated, for approximately ten days to start the alcoholic fermentation by the indigenous, wild yeasts found on the fruit and in the vineyard. Every 24 hours, 10% of the fermented grape must be collected from the bottom of the tank and transferred to the top, and 10% of the freshly harvested grapes are added to the top of the tank. After the end of the fermentation, the fresh wine remains for 10 months on the fine lees. The resulting wine is balanced, well-structured, and dazzles with its golden color, clean floral and sweet, honey-like aroma, and dry flavors of stone fruits and citrus. Pairs well with Greek salad, fish, and shellfish. $$22.99
2022 Armand Heitz, Chardonnay, France, 2022, Alc. 12%
In 1857, the history of the estate begins with the family Niรฉ-Vantey. They owned vines from Santenay to Clos de Vougeot and were important in the wine trade. At the beginning of the 20th century, Georges Lochardet, a Niรฉ-Vantey family descendant and a large wine merchant in the Cรดte de Beaune, took over twenty hectares of vineyards and several houses. On his death, his son Armand Lochardet inherited half of the estate and passed it to his three children, Bernard, Catherine, and Brigitte. In 1983, Brigitte Lochardet married Christian Heitz and created the Domaine Heitz Lochardet a few years later. Today, vine cultivation is carried out by the Maison Joseph Drouhin under the Heitz Lochardet name using the principles of organic viticulture. In 2011, Armand Heitz, the grandson of Armand Lochardet, obtained his oenologist diploma and took over the reins of the Domaine. In 2012, Armand began the cultivation of vines on land in several parts of Burgundy, growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. In parallel, Armand created the House of Armand Heitz. This wine is golden with hints of tropical fruit, lemon, peaches, and a bit of cream on the palate. Serve with white fish, scallops, and soft cheeses. $$24.99
Fruit is from Bockenheim. It has 5-6 g residual sugar and was on the lees until it was bottled in July 2023. This almost clear colored Trocken (dry) styled Riesling from the Pfalz region of Germany opens with a nectarine pit and wet stone bouquet with a hint of lime zest. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with great acidity. The mouthfeel is bright, zesty, and mouthwatering. The flavor profile is a lime and white grapefruit blend with notes of chalky minerality and tonic water, with some hints of white peach and a dash of white pepper. The finish is quite dry, and its flavors and acidity show nice length. Serve this Riesling slightly chilled on a hot day, on the beach, this summer. It pairs well with many dishes, including grilled chicken, Asian foods, Sushi, fresh fish, shrimp, and scallops. The 1 liter size (6.5 glasses) makes it a great buy. $19.99
For four generations, Calabretta has been a family winery focused on showcasing the centuries-old traditions of Etna. From Gaetano Calabretta, who began the commercial activities of the winery, selling mainly to northern Italy in the 1920s and 1930s, to his great-grandson Massimiliano, who manages the winery today. The Calabretta vineyards are found within the Etna DOC, where the volcanic soils (both sandy and rocky) and high elevation (600-1000m) create unique microclimates. High winds make it relatively easy to farm organically, the black soils and intense sunshine promote ripeness, and the pronounced temperature difference between night and day preserves acidity and elegance. Through thoughtful and minimal intervention, vineyard work using only copper and sulfur sprays, as little as possible; growing “green manure” cover crops; plowing to aerate the soil; and pruning and harvesting by hand. The cellar has multiple levels, including one underground, dug into the volcanic rock, allowing year-round maintenance of ideal temperature and humidity. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations occur spontaneously, and the wines age in large Slavonian old oak barrels, where they can gently settle and clarify over time without intervention. Gaio Gaio is a selection of young vine Nerello Mascalese, aged in stainless and cask, and is fruity with Etna’s classic minerally backbone. It is light-bodied with loads of fruit, with a light forest floor, and savory notes on the nose and palate. It pairs well with anything Italian. $24.99
2021 Two Mountain Winery, Syrah Yakima Valley, Washington, 100% Syrah, Alc. 13.9%
The name, Two Mountain Winery, was inspired by the majestic views of Mt. Adams and Mt. Rainier, which serve as the backdrop of Copeland Vineyard. Bought by the Schmidt brothers from their family in 2006, Schmidt Orchards were planted by their grandfather, Phil Schmidt. In 1951, it became Copeland Vineyard, which the brothers planted with their uncle, Ron Schmidt, in 2000, and learned the business. Fast forward to now, and you will find them living, breathing, and drinking work in the vineyard and at the winery. This Syrah is 100% Syrah grapes from the Copeland and Schmidt vineyards. The wine is barrel-aged for 22 months in 79% French, 21% American (39% new, 61% neutral oak casks). It is a small release with just 419 cases produced. Bright red fruit aromas of black cherry, raspberry, and tobacco with similar notes on the palate, along with soft tannins and a mouth-filling finish. $24.99

Wear Orange was inspired by the tragic death of Hadiya Pendleton. One week after marching in President Obamaโs second inaugural parade, Hadiya was shot and killed in a playground in Chicago in January 2013,
Hadiya Pendleton had hopes of studying abroad one day. Instead of planning for this optimistic future, her family was planning her funeral. Eighteen-year-old Hadiya was not the intended target. She shot in the back and killed while standing with friends at a park in Chicago. The group she was standing with was mistaken for members of a gang.
Soon after, Hadiyaโs friends commemorated her life by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others. Wear Orange is now observed every June. Thousands of people wear the color orange to honor Hadiya and the more than 43,000 Americans are killed with guns and approximately 76,000 more are shot and wounded every year.
Survivors of gun violence are not only the direct victims. Survivors are friends, family and community members who live with this pain. Their hearts are emblazoned with the scars of their losses.
But as incidents of gun violence have grown, so too has the movement to stop it. Moms Demand Action and Wear Orange advocate for the safe and lawful use of guns.
Moms Demand Actioncontinues to educate, raise awareness, organize, advocate, and rally for safer communities. Wear Orange events are organized by the local chapters of Moms Demand Action to memorialize what would have been Hadiyaโs 18th birthday, June 2,1992.
ยท Wear Orange this week-end.

The Volker Goetze Quartet, featuring musicians Volker Goetze, world renowned Sri Lankan drummer Uthpala Eroshan, Oran Etkin, and Alexis Cuadrado, will return to Manship Artists Residency for a performance entitled, Musical Crossroads on June 15. The new musical compositions were born at the Manship Artists Residency in 2023.
The work transforms ancient Sri Lankan folk tales inspired by Kandyan traditional dances into a contemporary context. They highlight stories of reincarnation, sacrifice, and selfless devotion. Each musician brings his own richly informed cultural intelligence to the group’s sound. A gorgeous experiment in cross-cultural collaboration, Musical Crossroads brings together the traditions of Jazz and Kandyan percussion to create a new musical vision.
The Volker Goetze Quartet is a recipient of a 2023 grant from Chamber Music Americaโs Artistic Projects program, funded through the generosity of The Howard Gilman Foundation. The performance and residency are supported by The Prometheus Circle of the Manship Artists Residency and Ken Kinna.
This special performance will take place Saturday, June 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. It is a fundraiser for Manship Artists Residency. Tickets are $75/person. To register please go to the Manship Artists Residency website at ManshipArtists.org.

The Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC) announces an exciting slate of public events featuring awardees of the 20th annual Goetemann Artist Residency program: Sarah McEneaney as the Distinguished Artist/Teacher in Residence, Caroline Bagenal as the Environmental Installation Artist, and Loren Doucette as the Gloucester Invitational Artist.
About The Distinguished Artist/Teacher in Residence:
Sarah McEneaney’s paintings are autobiographical narratives. She makes detailed and highly colored paintings of personal events, from the mundane to the horrific. She records the daily life of an artist actively engaged in the world. The scenes, moments and details are as carefully selected and edited as the formal decisions of color, line and perspective.
Her workshop will focus on developing the independent visual voice of each student through one-on-one critiques, group discussions of work, and technical guidance. Students can expect a lively environment of experimentation and imagery drawn from a variety of sources.
She will give a talk on August 4 at 2:00 PM, to be held in the Cape Ann Museum, 27 Pleasant St. in Gloucester.
The Workshop will be held at Montserrat College in Beverly, Monday, August 5 through Thursday, August 8 from 10 AM to 2 PM
For more information and to register for the workshop, visit: WORKSHOP LINK GOES HERE. Space is limited.
About the Environmental Installation Artist:
Caroline Bagenal was born in Scotland and lives in Newburyport, MA, and Cumbria in the UK. She has an MFA in Painting and an MA in Modern Art History, Theory and Criticism from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been shown widely in both the UK and the USA including The Maritime Museum in Liverpool and OIA Gallery, New York. Her work has been reviewed in Boston Art Review, Sculpture Magazine, The Boston Globe, Art New England, Artscope and other publications and is included in both private and corporate collections. She has received numerous awards and artists residencies, most recently in 2023 at Cove Park, Scotland. She was an Associate Professor at Montserrat College of Art for twenty-five years.
In August 2021, Caroline fell off her bike and broke both arms and her jaw. Swimming outdoors became an important part of her recovery and the origin of a new body of work. She made her first swimming sculptures from recycled nets, and then larger swimming sculptures from recycled woven plastic, bubble wrap and other materials that float.
For the Goetemann Residency, her intent is to continue the swimming sculpture project, taking it in new directions. She is planning to make a film using drones to better convey the idea of the swimmer as part of a vast ocean environment. Her father was a marine biologist, and she plans to use some of his research in this project as a homage to him. Bagenal will present two Public Artist Talks:
Introductory opening talk: Wednesday, September 11, 7-8:30 PM at The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck
Closing presentation and Q&A: Tuesday, October 1, time, tbd at Ocean Alliance,
Loren Doucette lives in Gloucester, MA working as a full-time painter. Her work has shown in solo and group exhibitions since 2006. She received a BFA in Drawing and Painting in 2013 from Montserrat College of Art where she participated in Montserratโs study-abroad program in Italy. It was there that landscape painting became a stabilizing force in her work. Using Oil, Acrylic, Pastel and Gouache, her work includes architectural landscapes unique to Gloucesterโs harbor, vibrant floral paintings, emotional figurative work and abstractions that come from the bones of all three subjects.
In her words:
โMy work is a search, an asking, a prayer. Even though the subjects are sometimes recognizable as landscape, flowers or figures, it is about recalibration, remembering, revisiting, reconstruction and discovery. I mainly use three mediums: oil, acrylic and pastel. I use oil for it’s heaviness; the messy squishing and sloshing takes me to more unruly places than acrylic can. I use acrylic on the other hand for it’s vibrancy. It’s quick drying qualities allow me to draw into the work in between paint layers. Finally, pastel is where I draw and construct from flowers and landscape with overlying abstraction and color experimentation.
Within all these mediums, I am searching for a new discovery to unfold both in the materials and spiritual content.โ
Loren will give a talk about her work and career at The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck on Thursday, October 10 at 7PM and will welcome people into her Cripple Cove Studio for a closing talk and viewing on Sunday, November 3 from 1-3PM.

“Ask and you shall receive” was in full play recently when I visited Sabine at the newly opened 80 Main Antiques & Ephemera on Main St in Gloucester. I do love ephemera and I mentioned I was always on the lookout for cut glass tumblers. Within a few days, I heard back from Sabine that she had some available for me to look at. I came home with 2 beautiful (and reasonably priced) glasses to class up my evening cocktail hour. Thanks Sabine! Looking forward to returning.
