Portland Waterfront — pat morss

Last week I attended the New England Museum Association Annual Conference in Portland, ME. A “Waterfront Walk” field trip led by staff from the Gulf of Maine Research Institute pointed out a number of interesting comparisons with Gloucester.

Morning snow and schooners in hibernation at the harbor entry from Casco Bay.
Working down the waterfront, a life-size whale graphic at the Maine State Pier.
Further out the pier, walking on water at the car ferry loading ramp.
Also on the pier is the passenger ferry terminal, on the first level of a parking garage.
Lobster boats at Custom House Wharf dealing with overcrowded shoreside facilities.
Widgery Wharf has a new building, elevated in response to climate change and flooding.
Widgery seen from Union Wharf – unpopular condos beyond on Chandler’s Wharf.
Gulls enjoying gurry at the Portland Fish Exchange (display-auction since 1986).
Some of the larger fishing vessels docked at Portland Fish Pier.
US Coast Guard facility at Wrights Wharf (main USCG Station is across the harbor).
Adjacent, on Commercial Street, is the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, Our host.
It advances marine research, ecosystem/climate education, and the blue economy.

BC Eagles vs NU Huskies  – Women’s College Hockey Tournament At Dorothy Talbot Rink, O’Malley School

32 Cherry Street, Gloucester, MA

We began the quadricentennial celebrations in January with a very boisterous hockey game between the Bruins Alumni team and Gloucester High School Alumni. At that time, the score was 6  – 3 for the Bruins. The Dorothy Talbot rink rocked and was at full capacity.

We hope to repeat that same enthusiasm for a game between Boston College Eagles and Northeastern University’s Women’s College Hockey team thanksgiving weekend. Hosted by Gloucester 400+ and the Athletic Committee, it’s the perfect post-Thanksgiving family event.

Tickets are available on line at www.Gloucesterma400.org

The price has been kept to @$5.00. Gloucester 400+ and the Athletics Committee have made available free tickets to our many partner organizations that serve their clients.

Sundays At The Azorean

We got a little bit off track in our normal Sunday routine for a while so it had been a little while since we’d had our Sunday at the Azorean on Washington St. until recently. No steps have been lost in the service, the tastiness and menu variety! It’s so relaxing and enjoyable no matter what food-mood we are in. I chose Shrimp Mozambique rather than my usual beef and I was not disappointed. It was a little spicier than I expected which I relished! Jim had Stuffed Shrimp (not pictured) and Kale Soup. We each indulged in dessert. As always, it was a lovely evening out and only a short ride from nearly anywhere in Gloucester.
