Dick Wilson Scholarship please share

The GFAA would like to announce to the community that we have allocated funds to start a scholarship in memory of our founder and friend, Dick Wilson.

Dick passed away in July 2023.  He was a believer in doing what he called “good-ness” and made a difference with his philanthropy and volunteerism in countless ways in the community.  The hallmark of Dick’s life was doing good deeds, big and small, and he made Gloucester better along the way.  He had a knack for seeing a problem, coming up with an idea on how to fix it, and getting people to help him make it happen.  He was an inspiration to many and had a profound impact on Gloucester and the people that call Gloucester home.

We would like to offer a scholarship to a graduating high school senior.  The amount will be determined annually.  Half of the scholarship will be for the recipient to get started in their next chapter and half of the scholarship will be for the recipient to use to do “good-ness” in Gloucester.

Dick wasn’t a big fan of a lot of paperwork or a lot of rules, so we are going to honor that with this scholarship.  More details will be shared during the upcoming school year.

If you would like to make a contribution to the scholarship, checks can be mailed to

Cape Ann Artisans Announce Summer Mini-Tour Participants

Art tour coincides with Mass Tax Free Weekend

The Cape Ann Artisans invite the public to visit select studios on Saturday, August 12th for a one-day event.   The timing coincides with Mass Tax Free weekend as well as the height of Gloucester and Rockport’s summer activities along the waterfront.  The summer Mini-Tour is an off-shoot of the larger tour that takes place in the Spring and Fall.

This year’s Mini-Tour includes these artists and the numbers coincide with their place on the full Spring and Fall tours – the map can be downloaded here: Brochure & Map:

3) Beth Williams – Handmade Art-Glass Beads & Jewelry
10) Pam Stratton – Mosaics, Mixed Media & Jewelry
11) Cynthia Curtis – Ceramic Arts, Stoneware
13) David Archibald – Ceramic Arts, Porcelain & Stoneware
15) Danette English – Ceramic Arts
16) John Abisamra – Landscape Photography
17) Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco – Sea Glass Wearable Art; Hair Accessories & Jewelry

The Mini-Tour is a great chance to give out of town visitors a glimpse of the tour which has always occurred on the fringe of summer.   The Artisans have enjoyed meeting an entirely new set of summer Cape Ann residents.  With some advance planning it’s easy to see all seven studios.   The Cape Ann Artisans “From the Studio” blog on their website is a great way to find out more about each artist and prepare for your visit.   The Mass Sales Tax Holiday will take place August 12 and 13th.  Retail items of up to $2500, purchased in Massachusetts for personal use on these two days will be exempt for sales tax.

Moon Over Ice

The Sturgeon Moon sits just above Cape Pond Ice in this photo. In the foreground you can see three dimly lit rowing dories (I need to better school myself on the the difference between seine boats, gigs, dories, etc!). To the left is Finn….just home from a striper fishing trip.

Sunday Dinner At Oliver’s Harbor

We like to have a regular plan to go out for Sunday dinner, so we chose Oliver’s Harbor on Main St this week. Oliver’s Harbor has a lot going for it: location, outdoor seating, wonderful bar area, friendly staff and delicious food! Several people were sitting on the outside deck, but we like the bar area. Ariadhi was our helpful and efficient server. We looked forward to hearing the specials and we each chose one: Lobster Carbonara and Baked Haddock. Each was excellent and nicely presented. For the sake of this post, I also ordered the Chocolate Mousse….mmmmm….. Thanks Oliver’s Harbor for another lovely dining experience.
