Scallop Processing — pat morss

‘Cape Ann Lobstermen,’ in East Gloucester, invited me for a close look earlier this week at how scallops are brought in and processed. The season opened April 1st and will only last 4-6 weeks. There are 70+ boats here rigged for scalloping, and most of them are visiting from Maine, and some from New Hampshire. Massachusetts and the Bay of Fundy reportedly have the best scallop grounds. Scallops are shucked on board (a permit requirement) and the quota is 200 pounds/vessel/day. I hope I have my facts correct.

After docking, a crew member on Beast of Burden jumps the drag gear
A receipt for the captain after scallops are off-loaded and weighed
Beast of Burden backs off to make room for …
One More, which was waiting
Loading bags of shucked scallops into a bucket
Which is lifted onto the pier for individual bag weighing
Tallying weights before issuing the receipt
Next … Isla & Alanea moves in to dock
Lifting her catch up to the pier for weighing
Delivering the crated and iced bags into the processing building by forklift
Opening bags, sorting scallops by size, and re-bagging for wholesale auction
‘Cape Ann Lobstermen’ also buys from the boats and sells retail
The cycle repeats with the boats out day and night while the season lasts

Fireside Chat Series (Special Presentation) – Susan Morreale MONDAY, APRIL 17, 2023 AT 6 PM

Beauport Hotel Gloucester

This is a special presentation in conjunction with our Fireside Chat Series which will take place in our ballroom.

Join us in welcoming Susan Morreale, who will be presenting: “The Changing Landscape: Summer Hotels of East Gloucester.” This one-hour, visual journey is based on actual photographs of a lovely and short-lived time gone by, c1900. Learn about the 15 hotels, who they served, and what happened to them. Susan will take you around the East Gloucester peninsula to a world where guests stayed, not for a week, but for a season. Understand how the land changed from one of farms and pastures to a center of resort life, and became the most dense area of summer hotels between Boston and Maine.

This Author Talk is free admission, food and drinks are available for purchase. Light refreshments will be provided. Event will take place at the Beauport Hotel. RSVP via email Concierge@BeauportHotel.com.

The Whalemobile

We booked The Whalemobile to come to Harborlight Montessori the other day and it was fantastic. Thank you to Cynde for all of the hard work and passion you put into educating children about humpback whales, conservation, and the waters off of our coast. Seeing Nile, the life-sized inflatable humpback that was designed to look exactly like the real Nile who makes appearances on Stellwagen Bank and Jeffreys Ledge, is pretty tremendous. Annie And Squam Have Returned To Osprey Nest!

A VERY reliable sign that the season has changed is the return of ospreys Annie and Squam to the nest behind Lobsta Land (opening today on Causeway Street!) along with our other local ospreys. I was excited to see the pair in the nest on the Essex Greenbelt Osprey Cam. I start watching them and the next thing you know, several minutes have flown by. I got caught up watching one of them heroically attempting to move one of the larger sticks to a better location.

Here you see an example of one of the better shots I can get (and this is cropped), so following on the Osprey Cam is a true delight. Looking forward to eggs in the nest (hopefully). Thank you Essex Greenbelt for the cam!

Kilimanjaro or Bust!

russellsheri's avatarCape Ann Wellness

If you have heard of SoftWave therapy but have not yet tried it, here’s a TESTIMONIAL you need to read:

Johanna Hughes, visiting from the UK came to see Dr. Sheri Russell at The RUSSELL CENTER in July 2022 as a referral. Pre-Covid, she had planned a trip to climb Mount Kilimanjaro which had been canceled or postponed several times.

Finally, the trip was back on her calendar and scheduled for September 2022.

Unfortunately, her body and her calendar weren’t aligning. Johanna suffered a hip injury about six years ago that gradually led to other issues in her right leg including her knee, adductor muscles, and IT band.

A fit and active person, Johanna regularly practiced yoga & pilates as well as played Padel (a racquet sport that is a mix between tennis and squash) and (English) football.

Unfortunately, her injury got to the point where her leg was giving…
