As a member of The One Hour at a Time Gang (we try on Saturday mornings to clean the streets and beaches), I must say the cigarette butts are disgusting.
The city needs to fine people for throwing this litter on our streets.
Could it be that smokers who throw cigarettes out of windows and on streets not know that is littering — just like throwing a coffee cup out onto the streets and onto our beaches? As we clean, most of the litter is cigarette butts.
Please smokers, think before you throw them on the ground.
Our environment and city will thank you.

you bet and so are the accompanying scratch tickets as well as coffee cups and nip bottles. I think its one or two folks using Nautilus Rd as a trash can, as the trash is the same week in week out. The Segrems VO nip bottle guy has hundreds of bottles lining the streets around the golf club . This is just one slob of a dude dropping them . The public in general is much neater. Oh ya ,the person who dumps their daily red plastic cigar tube is a slob too.

you do a great job guys..keep getting the word out,thats all you can do. the people who are littering with the butts and bottles etc. are just lazy and have no respect for others.

It is amazing how many cigarette butts there are. Either people still smoke a lot or it takes about a year for them to degrade. Probably both.
The best thing to do if you smoke cigarettes is to save all of your butts in a mayonnaise jar. Once it is full just add water and shake. That way the butts do not end up on the street and you can imagine what your lungs look like when you see the disgusting mess that is inside the jar.
The one other fun fact about tossing that lit butt out the car window: The kinds of birds that like to nest in the rafters of your house in Gloucester know exactly what kind of nice nesting material the cigarette butt makes. Didn’t one of those house fires we had recently start in the rafters? The birds are making nests right now and can pick up a lit butt and stick it into the nice dry nest in the attic space. Poof goes the house.

I sweep them up on a daily basis! I honestly don’t think most smokers realize what they are doing- I’ll watch someone looking in my store window while smoking a butt- then put it out on the sidewalk just outside the door and walk in to shop! Every fiber of my being is screaming “are you kidding me?!!” Then I get to vacuum up the ones that ride in on peoples shoes…. gros! So- thanks for the great efforts of the gang!
