Transcendent, gorgeous music, with inspiration found throughout the world, Jesse Cook and company gave a fabulous performance last night at Rockport’s Shalin Liu. Often described as new flamenco, Jesse’s music blends rhumba rhythms, jazz, Arabic music, traditional flamenco, and much, much more.
Currently touring with Jesse are Fethi Nadjem on violin, Matt Sellick on guitar, Matias Recharte on drums, and Dan Minchom on bass.
We met BJ in the lobby. He operated the cameras for the concert film that chronicles the “Beyond Borders” tour, currently playing on PBS. I asked BJ what was the process. He shares that nine cameras were set up nightly during the 31 day coast to coast tour of Canada. In addition, he used a hand held camera to maneuver around the stage. A different song was recorded each night in each different city. By the end of the tour, they had generated 50 TBs of footage. Jesse edited the film and it is beyond beautiful!
It would be tremendous if when Jesse returns to Cape Ann, he can play several nights. The concert at the Shalin Liu quickly sold out and it would be great if more people, especially young people, had the opportunity to hear his music.
We also had the pleasure of meeting Marcy and Christopher Plante, who were sitting next to us with their friends. Chris Plante built the Shalin Liu and Marcy’s friend was wearing a pair of butterfly earrings 🙂
Always a great time at the Halloween Festival at Gloucester City Hall. So many great volunteers and many donations from local retailers.

See Brooks Williams with opener Prateek at Old Sloop Coffeehouse this Friday, November 1. Brooks Williams hails from Statesboro, Georgia, the town made famous by country-blues legend Blind Willie McTell. Ranked in the Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists, he’s a mean finger-picker and a stunning slide guitarist. Plus, “he has a beautiful voice,” says AmericanaUK, “that you just melt into.” Not one easy to pigeon-hole, Brooks’ music is the love-child of country-blues and Americana. fRoots says, “Soulful Americana, full-on blues and tasty rootsy grooves. He really rocks!” Opener Prateek has been a Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Finalist and has been nominated for Singer-Songwriter of the Year at both the New England Music Awards and the Boston Music Awards.

The next phase of coastal storm repairs continue on Long Beach. This past week crews began adding sand, “beach nourishment”, atop the rip rap. The staging is on the Gloucester end while the first deposits are far off by the pedestrian bridge to Cape Hedge. The ocean hits the seawall a couple of hours before high tide so the work moves at a fast clip.
I overheard someone ask, “Why not wait till spring?” Sand moves and winter storms shift the terrain mightily. They explained that it’s intentional and this sand will come back.

Seems a sisyphean task at two hours before high tide. (below about half hour before)
We stopped by Essex ClamFest on Saturday after a hockey game at Pingree School in Hamilton. We missed the chowder competition, but the boys enjoyed lunch from Ipswich Clambake and an ice cream from Down River while we enjoyed two beers from Ipswich Ale. It was a beautiful afternoon and I’m glad they got so lucky with the weather!

Hello! My name is Brewster. I am a lucky guy who was found all the way in Puerto Rico and rescued with several other lucky kitties and moved up this way thanks to Wags 2 Riches Rescue. I am now looking for my shot at finding a forever home! I would do best in a home with another friendly confident cat, I enjoy the company of another feline companion and hopefully they will help to teach me the ropes of what life is like indoor living. I much prefer the quiet side to take things at my own pace, I would do great in a low traffic home with older children that can respect my space. I love tasty treats especially tuna & playing the day away chasing wand toys.If you are looking for a laid back guy stop by and meet me today!
